Book Magical Criticism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Bracken
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2008-09-15
  • ISBN : 0226069923
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Magical Criticism written by Christopher Bracken and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Enlightenment, Western scholars racialized ideas, deeming knowledge based on reality superior to that based on ideality. Scholars labeled inquiries into ideality, such as animism and soul-migration, “savage philosophy,” a clear indicator of the racism motivating the distinction between the real and the ideal. In their view, the savage philosopher mistakes connections between signs for connections between real objects and believes that discourse can have physical effects—in other words, they believe in magic. Christopher Bracken’s Magical Criticism brings the unacknowledged history of this racialization to light and shows how, even as we have rejected ethnocentric notions of “the savage,” they remain active today in everything from attacks on postmodernism to Native American land disputes. Here Bracken reveals that many of the most influential Western thinkers dabbled in savage philosophy, from Marx, Nietzsche, and Proust, to Freud, C. S. Peirce, and Walter Benjamin. For Bracken, this recourse to savage philosophy presents an opportunity to reclaim a magical criticism that can explain the very real effects created by the discourse of historians, anthropologists, philosophers, the media, and governments.

  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Global Denim written by Daniel Miller and published by Berg. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On any given day nearly half the world's population is wearing blue jeans. This is entirely extraordinary. Yet there has never been a serious attempt to understand the causes, nature and consequences of denim as 'the' global garment of our world. This book takes up that challenge with gusto. It gives clear, if surprising, explanations for why this is the case, challenging the accepted history of jeans and showing why the reasons cannot be commercial. While discussing the consequences of denim at the global level, the book consists of some exemplary studies by anthropologists of what blue jeans mean in a variety of local situations. These range from the discussion of hip-hop jeans in Germany, denim and sex in Milan through to the connection between denim and recycling in the US. But through all these intensively researched ethnographies of local denim we build our understanding of the most curious of all features of blue jeans - the rise of global denim.

And, like the American dream, denim is constantly reinventing itself. A Denim Story showcases timeless images of blue jean style. Featuring such icons as Marilyn Monroe, Patti Smith, Jane Birkin, and Kate Moss, as well as dreamy inspiration boards from the authors' own work, this volume is full of ideas and inspirations. A pair of jeans always makes a statement, whether they are tight and purposeful or loose and frayed. Blue jeans can embody dreamy, girlish innocence or the best of boyishness, as when worn two sizes too big, low on the hips, and rolled up at the ankle. A Denim Story takes us on a journey through the most stylish looks of Americana culture, from the cutoffs and rolled-up cuffs of carefree summertime days to the simple ruggedness of overalls in the countryside, and from the rebelliously ripped jeans of rock 'n' roll to that beloved pair of faded and patched blue jeans we will never throw away. Denim is the material of independence and self-expression, timelessly cool, boasting an authenticity and function that transcend trends and is always sexy. Exquisitely curated by Current, Elliott, and Walsh, A Denim Story is a visual love song to blue jeans, sure to seduce everyone who picks it up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1960, Billy Boyd Lavender made a profession of faith and was baptized into a family of Christians. Subsequently, that tumultuous decade brought about a slower spiritual maturity. However, the Lord kept Billy under his umbrella of protection and waited patiently for his rededication in August of 1974. Since the summer of 1974, Billy has been a student of prophecy and Bible study. For the past forty-four years, he has referred to the Bible as the "language book of God." At times the still small voice in his heart would be ignored to his detriment, but other times it could be heard loud and clear and with certainty. After a twenty-six-year career in information technology, Billy's health began to fail. He and his wife, Cheryl, appealed to God. What seemed to the doctors to be his certain demise proved to be just another opportunity for God to reveal himself as the master physician. Beginning in 1991 until now, God has spared him from a heart transplant, a high-speed head-on collision, and a brain hemorrhage. It Can't Be Luck ascribes all honor and glory to his Lord who has stuck closer than a brother throughout his life.

Book Your Band Sucks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jon Fine
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2016-05-03
  • ISBN : 014310828X
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Your Band Sucks written by Jon Fine and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir charting thirty years of the American indie rock underground by a musician who was at its center Jon Fine spent nearly thirty years performing and recording with bands that played aggressive and challenging underground rock music, and, as he writes, at no point were any of those bands “ever threatened, even distantly, by actual fame.” Yet when the members of his 1980s post-hardcore band Bitch Magnet came together for an unlikely reunion tour in 2011, diehard fans traveled from far and wide to attend their shows, despite creeping middle-age obligations of parenthood and 9-to-5 jobs. Their devotion was testament to the remarkable staying power of indie culture. In indie rock’s pre-Internet glory days, bands like Bitch Magnet, Black Flag, Mission of Burma, and Sonic Youth—operating far outside commercial radio and major label promotion—attracted fans through word of mouth, college DJs, record stores, and zines. They found glory in all-night recording sessions, shoestring van tours, and endless appearances in grimy clubs. Some bands with a foot in this scene, like REM and Nirvana, eventually attained mainstream success. Many others, like Bitch Magnet, were beloved only by the most obsessed fans of the time. Your Band Sucks is an insider’s look at that fascinating, outrageous culture—how it emerged and evolved, how it grappled with the mainstream and vice versa, and its odd rebirth in recent years as countless bands reunited, briefly and bittersweetly. With backstage access to many key characters on the scene—and plenty of wit and sharply worded opinion—Fine delivers a memoir that affectionately yet critically portrays an important, heady moment in music history. Praise for Your Band Sucks: “Everything a cult-fave musician’s memoir should be: It’s a seductively readable book that requires no previous knowledge of the author, Bitch Magnet or any other band with which he’s played.” —Janet Maslin, The New York Times “Jon Fine has produced as evocative a portrait of the underground music scene as any wistful, graying post-punk could wish for.” —The Atlantic
