Book excerpt: The general purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between selected demographics and community college faculty attitudes toward distance learning. Other interest included faculty development in distance learning. The population for this study was faculty members from three Maryland community colleges, one rural, one suburban and one urban. This descriptive study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey instrument and semi-structured interviews were used as a means for collecting data. The survey and interview data were used to compare perceptions among varying levels of faculty based on age, gender, educational level, and years of service. The findings provided insight into faculty views about distance learning training at their own institutions. The research study was designed utilizing Gaff's (1975) conceptual framework for staff development in education, which included motivational and attitudinal variables that affected faculty effectiveness. Attitude theory as discussed by several theorists including Eagly, Chaiken, Rokeach, and Maultsby, were theoretical perspectives used to explain and interpret the fact that attitudes made actions as well as ideas instantly feel right or wrong without conscious analysis. The major finding from this study suggested that male faculty had more positive attitudes toward distance learning than female faculty. The three key factors for faculty participation in distance learning were found to be training, extra pay and extra time. Implications for faculty development were identified as a result of the study's findings. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine college and university leaders’ background in, perceptions of, and experiences with the administration of high-quality online programs and design of online courses. The population of this study included academic leaders at higher education institutions within the state of Texas from 2 and 4-year undergraduate and graduate, public and private, for-profit and not-for-profit institutions that had at least one 100% online program. A quantitative research design was used through the distribution of a survey that contained two parts: part one asked questions related to the background demographics of the leader and their respective institution while part two was a replication of two sections of the Online Learning Consortium’s Scorecard for the Administration of Online Programs. Data were analyzed through multiple methods including descriptive, correlation, and causal comparative statistics. Findings include describing current academic leaders’ and institutions’ background demographics and the perception of online program quality held by academic leaders. Recommendations are provided to institutions looking to improve online program quality or hire an administrator for online programs. Online program quality may be improved by institutions establishing a process for the development/redesign of online courses, establishing course development standards, and requiring faculty to collaborate with instructional designers. Book excerpt: In much of the scholarship of distance learning, context is often subordinate to utopian arguments for the spatial and temporal benefits of online pedagogy. To argue unilaterally that distance learning is successful, or not successful, is to misunderstand the ways in which institutions, departments, individual faculty, and students deploy courses and programs. All online courses are not created alike. What is needed are more localized, situated examinations of distance learning within the scope of a particular institution, even a particular department, in order to gauge online learning's effects, and effectiveness, as a delivery mode of instruction. To understand these spaces more fully, it is important to evaluate the ways in which departments are technologizing their classrooms, their programs, their faculty, their courses, and thereby their institutions. My dissertation examines distance learning within a local, particular context: UCF's English department. In order to fully examine distance learning in this specific environment, I employ institutional critique as my methodology, a rhetorical and spatial approach that allows me to map distance learning within UCF's English department. Drawing upon the work of David Harvey, I examine the experienced, perceived, and imagined spaces of distance learning in our department. Through an examination of the history of naming UCF, rhetorical analyses of institutional documents that reference technologies, analysis of survey results noting faculty attitudes and perceptions of online learning, and postmodern mapping of faculty members' perceived and ideal spaces, we can find local solutions for local problems related to distance learning.
