Download or read book A History of the United States Classic Reprint written by William C. Doub and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States During recent years there has been much written and much said about making the study of history and civics in the ele mentary schools something more than committing to memory dates, facts and events. Many newspapers and educational journals and many of those educators Who talk publicly on school questions have criticised severely the results secured from the time devoted to history and civics in the grammar schools. The method used and the lack of proper preparation on the part of the teacher have been held responsible for the poor results secured in these subjects. It has been customary to hold the teacher responsible for the method used and for her poor preparation, and thus to place the entire blame on her. Many have promptly and justly replied that they cannot be expected to expend from two to three thousand dollars in securing a higher education for the purpose of receiving the small salaries paid in the elementary schools. They have also replied - and this is even more to the point - that not being specialists in history and civics, they cannot, With any degree of success, teach these subjects by the topical method When every grammar school history text-book in print adopts, almost entirely, the cut and-dried chronological-event method. In relation to all these conditions, special attention is called to the fact that in this book the topical treatment is used Without any reserve What ever. No teacher can use this book as a text-book and use any other than the topical method, and no pupil can study this book without becoming interested in the real spirit of our history and having cultivated in him the desire to perform to the best of his ability the duties of American citizenship. Book History of the United States

Download or read book History of the United States written by Emma Willard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Book A History of the United States for Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the United States for Schools Classic Reprint written by Andrew Cunningham McLaughlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our United States: A History Throughout this volume, the larger emphasis has been placed upon social and industrial history. Such vital topics as the industrial revolution, the westward movement, the rise and control of large corporations, questions of labor, of the tariff, money, and banking, these have received much more than the usual space. However, in writing the story of our wars, the author has proceeded upon the theory that if the story is worth telling at all, it is worth telling well. Therefore, an endeavor has been made to present a vivid narrative of military cam paigns, rather than a mere colorless summary. Teachers will find the story of the campaigns of the Civil War narrated from the geographical point of view, a method of approach which clears away the difficulties of the story when told merely as a chronology of events. Above all, the author has kept in View the dominant pur pose in present-day teaching of history and government; that is, the preparation of pupils for intelligent, helpful citizenship through the study of our country's history, its ideals, and institutions. History teaching worthy of the name no longer tolerates the mere recital of facts, dates, and names, or the answering of stereotyped questions at the end of the chapter. Rather, our teachers of history will draw from the events of the past their underlying significance; and they will relate the past to the present in such a way as to create in the minds of the pupils high ideals of American citizenship and of political conduct. Download or read book American History and Civics Classic Reprint written by P. F. Valentine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History and Civics An accurate knowledge of the chronology of important facts and events will be considered essential; but by chronology we do not mean dates, except in a few specified cases: we mean sequence - the order of events, so to speak - and the historic period to which the events belong. To facilitate this chronology the General Outline has been divided into periods, each representing some definite era in the development of the nation. In addition to the General Outline, a number of specific items, under the head, Items of General Intelligence, are presented. These represent a minimum summary of miscellaneous facts of common knowledge in American history. They are the every-day used facts, and are couse quently of prime importance. The student should possess a knowledge of all these facts to the extent indicated. The story of territorial growth and the expansion of settlement is a narrative of inspiring and patriotic interest that every teacher and every citizen should know. The mere elements of this story are included in the General Outline; but to facilitate its study as a distinct phase of our history, a separate outline is given. For entrance to the Normal School, no minute and judicial knowledge of the subject will be required. What we want is a possession of the simple facts of territorial acquisition and growth, coupled with the ability to tell the dramatic, soul-stirring, supremely human epic of the people in their surging westward march. Download or read book A Short History of the United States Classic Reprint written by John Spencer Basset and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-21 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States IN this book I have sought to tell clearly and impartially the story of human achievement in what is now the United States, from the earliest traces of man's existence to the present time. Out of the multitude of facts which may be considered within the domain of American history, those have been recounted which seem best suited to explain the progress of the people as a nation. The influence of physical environment has been discussed in the opening chapter, which also deals with the primitive inhabitants. An attempt has been made to give the colonial period its proper unity and show in what manner the colonies were a part of the general British scheme of im perial government. At the same time one must remember that it is American and not British history which concerns us, and for that reasor. The narrative must not neglect the individual colonies. From the end of the colonial period the dominant interest is the progress of events which'have to do with the common cause of independence, and after that with national development. Much thought has been given to the proper distribution of em phasis between the various historical factors. Political institutions are the most conscious expression of the national will. They determine the form of the story which the historian has to tell. But social and economic conditions and the actions of leading men give color and contour to the figure and decide whether it be attractive or unattractive, vivid or unimpressive. This volume contains at inter vals summaries of the habits and social progress of the people, while throughout it seeks to present the decisions of congress and adminis trations in the matters which relate to the most important phases of popular welfare. It is believed that, if well done, it thus becomes in the most vital sense a social history. My aim has been to lay the necessary foundation for those who wish to pursue further the subject of American history in whatever phase they may be interested. The writer has not found it so. On the contrary, during an experience of several years as an instructor in secondary schools, be found that the history of the United States could be made the most attractive subject of its kind. This was due not merely to its more intimate connection with the student, but also to the opportunities it offered for discussion and variety of Viewpoint. In the whole high school curriculum it proved to be the subject best adapted to arouse the interest of an otherwise uninterested pupil.
