There is tremendous amount of concern around persistence, retention, and attrition for under-represented minority students (URMs) majoring in STEM disciplines. Retaining this population of students in the different STEM discipline is also a major concern for educators and policy makers in the United States. Student interest is there, however, problems arise when course work becomes challenging. As a result, students tend to lose confidence and change their majors. The purpose of this study was to discover factors that are related to persistence in STEM majors for a group of URMs who participated in a summer bridge program between 2008- 2014 at a Predominately White Institution of higher learning. In this study the researcher used archived data and quantitative research methods to identify different factors. Data analysis was conducted to answer the eight research questions that guided the study. To answer research question 1, descriptive statistics were used to analyze data that provided a comprehensive description of the students’ high school and college academic performance. One way ANOVAs were computed to analyze data for research questions 2-6, whereas Chi –Square Tests of Independence were used to analyze data for research questions 7 and 8. The researcher examined data for 232 URMs who participated in a summer bridge program during 2008-2014 academic years. The findings for research question 1 revealed that URMs represented in this study were college ready according to their average ACT scores and high school GPAs. An examination of two gatekeeper courses (Calculus and Chemistry) revealed that majority of the students passed with a letter grade of C or below. The findings for research questions 2-6 revealed statistically significant differences for URM students who persisted in STEM majors. They included ACT composite scores, ACT subscale scores all expect for reading, first semester GPA, first year GPA, sophomore year GPA, and number of credits earned through sophomore year. The findings for research questions 7 and 8 revealed that persistence was not influenced by gender or STEM major.

Book excerpt: On August 8-12, 2010 the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), convened the Colloquy on Minority Males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), following the release of several reports highlighting the educational challenges facing minority males. The NSF recognized the need to gather input from research communities that focus on minority males about how to frame investigations of gender-based factors that impact learning and choice in STEM education (both at the precollege and higher education levels) and the workforce for minority males. There was particular interest in framing a research agenda to study how interactions between minority males and societal and educational systems (both formal and informal) encourage or discourage the young men's interest and persistence in STEM. In addition, NSF hoped to gain community input to inform the parameters of a future NSF research program that could effectively address minority male participation in STEM. The Colloquy was held at the Mt. Washington Conference Center in Baltimore, Maryland, with approximately 40 participants, most of them researchers in education, psychology, sociology, mathematics, and physics. Colloquy on Minority Males in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics presents a summary of the Colloquy's breakout and plenary discussions, which addressed (a) research questions articulated in the breakout groups together with theories and methodologies to begin to address these questions; and (b) considerations for a potential research solicitation for the NSF, with major areas of inquiry concerning access, participation, and success for minority males in STEM. This report reflects the views of the individuals who participated in the plenary and breakout groups. It has been reviewed in draft form by persons chosen for their diverse perspectives and expertise in accordance with procedures approved by the National Academies' Report Review Committee. The purpose of this independent review is to provide candid and critical comments that will assist the institution in making its published report as sound as possible and to ensure that the report meets institutional standards for quality and objectivity.

Book excerpt: In the current technological era, the number of minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a crucial factor in predetermining the economic growth of the United States. Since the minority population is growing at much faster rates than the non-minority population, the lack of proportionate production of minority engineers poses a threat to the United States' ability to remain a global competitor in technological innovation. Sixty-three per cent (63%) of undergraduate students who enter engineering majors continue on to graduate in that major. The graduation rate, however, for African-American, Hispanic, and Native-American students in engineering is significantly lower at 39%. As this group represents only a small fraction of the annual student enrollment, engineering programs are graduating these minority groups at rates that are greatly disproportionate to United States demographics. Therefore, researchers are thoroughly investigating certain initiatives that promote academic success among underrepresented minority students in engineering. Colleges and universities have attempted to address the growing achievement gap between underrepresented minority and non-minority engineering students, predominately through various deficit-based interventions, focusing on the student's flaws and problems. As the pipeline for minorities in engineering continues to narrow, it begs the question of whether institutions are focusing on the right solutions to the problem. Critical Race Theory scholars argue that colleges and universities must address institutional climate issues around students, such as racism, microaggressions, and marginalization, before members of oppressed groups can truly succeed. This dissertation explored the unique experiences of underrepresented minority engineering students in a predominately White and Asian campus.

Book excerpt: In the U.S. and England racial/ethnic minority student success in STEM graduate disciplines is important to HEI administrators and those policy makers concerned with ensuring viable and healthy economies and communities. U.S. Government studies show that the African and Hispanic Americans earn only about 3% and 2% of all STEM graduate degrees, respectively (comparable numbers for England are not available). The lack of success of such large numbers of minority STEM graduate students poses serious consequences for the student, institution, and broader society in the form of lack of innovation and stalled competitive global endeavors. For this dissertation I employed qualitative research methods (and quantitative baseline data) to design and conduct comparative phenomenological case study on the factors that influence minority success in graduate STEM. National clearinghouse data in both countries and insights from interview with students, faculty, and administrators at four comprehensive public research institutions (two per country) were used to develop the themes of social and cultural capital (focusing on socioeconomic status and parental education/family support); educational preparation; and educational experiences/engagement (focusing on institutional/faculty support and mentoring) to make comparisons that could be useful to educators in both countries in the continuing efforts to increase success through widening participation initiatives. A total of eighty administrators, faculty, and minority students were interviewed in the United State and England in order to discover and examine the influences, institutional environments, policies, programs, and practices that are perceived to contribute to the success of minorities in STEM. Findings indicate that a number of comparisons exist between the samples including the importance of parental and family support as a major influence in the development of the students social/cultural capital, which directly influences their interest and passion for these disciplines (preparation), and which in-turn influences the perceptions of their educational experiences.

Book excerpt: The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program of the US National Science Foundation has been a primary force for raising the success and graduation of minority students in STEM for 30 years. Increasing the number of underrepresented students earning baccalaureate degrees, and entering graduate school in STEM is the goal of LSAMP. This goal has been nearly achieved through the formation of alliances of degree granting institutions of higher learning, varying from community colleges to major research institutions. Currently there are 59 alliances including more than 400 institutions. LSAMP is responsible for more than 650,000 bachelor’s degrees earned by minority students in STEM. The papers for this Research Topic should focus on the use of LSAMP activities, programs and collaborations to develop pathways to success and graduation of STEM majors from minority groups that underrepresented in STEM. These pathways can include any segment from pre-college through graduate school. Areas of special interest include mentoring, research experiences, transitions between levels and novel approaches for retention. The studies should be research based and rigorous. They can be pure research studies, curriculum and design or literature reviews but they must be at a cutting edge level and be subject to detailed review and assessment.

Their participation could help re-establish the United States' preeminence in STEM innovation and productivity, while also increasing the number of well-educated STEM workers. There are nearly 700 minority-serving institutions (MSIs) that provide pathways to STEM educational success and workforce readiness for millions of students of colorâ€"and do so in a mission-driven and intentional manner. They vary substantially in their origins, missions, student demographics, and levels of institutional selectivity. But in general, their service to the nation provides a gateway to higher education and the workforce, particularly for underrepresented students of color and those from low-income and first-generation to college backgrounds. The challenge for the nation is how to capitalize on the unique strengths and attributes of these institutions and to equip them with the resources, exceptional faculty talent, and vital infrastructure needed to educate and train an increasingly critical portion of current and future generations of scientists, engineers, and health professionals.
