Book Decontamination of Pesticide Residues in the Environment

Download or read book Decontamination of Pesticide Residues in the Environment written by Francis A. Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That residues of pesticide and other "foreign" chemicals in food stuffs are of concern to everyone everywhere is amply attested by the reception accorded previous volumes of "Residue Reviews" and by the gratifying enthusiasm, sincerity, and efforts shown by all the in dividuals from whom manuscripts have been solicited. Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food-additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manufacture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those that persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established ones are continually being dis placed by newly developed ones more acceptable to food tech nologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-control requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of governmental agencies and legislative bodies around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of these chemicals per sisting into our foodstuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judgments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biological, chemical, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxicological disciplines.

Book Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production

Download or read book Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production written by J. Altman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects evaluates the effects of pesticides on plants by exploring the physical, chemical, biological, and ecological interactions of pesticides that influence a crop. The effects of pesticides on the environment and on the crop pests themselves are considered as well. Specific topics addressed include iatrogenic responses, the fate of pesticides applied to cereals under field conditions, the persistance of pesticides on target crops, the effect of pesticides on soil symbionts, and the role of ecological agriculture on conventional and organic cropping systems. Pesticide Interactions in Crop Production: Beneficial and Deleterious Effects will be an important volume for agriculturalists, phytologists, mycologists, soil biologists, plant pathologists, tropical ecologists, arboriculturalists, and other researchers interested in the effects of pesticides on crops and soil.

Book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides

Download or read book Environmental Dynamics of Pesticides written by V. Freed and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticides have played a significant role in increasing food production, and in view of growing worldwide food demand we can expect the use of these chemicals to increase. However, some of them have found their way into the biosphere and have been classi fied as persistent toxic chemicals. This has resulted in serious concern about environmental contamination. Since we are going to continue using chemicals, we should learn more about such aspects as their transport in the environment, the relationship of their physical-chemical properties to transport, their persistence in the biosphere, their partitioning in the biota, and toxicological and epidemiological forecasting based on physical-chemical properties. Environmental chemodynamics is the name given to a subject which deals with some of the above topics, utilizing the principles of such disciplines as chemistry, physics, systems analysis, modelling, engineering, and medical and biological sciences. To ensure the safety of the environment, we must know more about the chemodynamical behavior of pesticides and related chemi cals. The purpose of the symposium "Environmental Dynamics of Pes ticides" was to explore the concept of chemodynamics as applied to pesticides and thus may help in developing the emerging field of environmental chemodynamics. The symposium was held during the l37th National American Chemical Society Meeting at Los Angeles, California, during April, 1974. The three sessions in the sym posium were chai'red by Drs. V.H. Freed, D.G. Crosby, and R. Haque.

Book Interactions of Biochar and Herbicides in the Environment

Download or read book Interactions of Biochar and Herbicides in the Environment written by Kassio Ferreira Mendes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions of Biochar and Herbicides in the Environment details how biochar interferes with herbicide behavior which includes processes such as sorption-desorption, runoff, leaching, and degradation in soil and weed control efficacy. The book provides essential information on biochar applications in agriculture, production systems, and the physicochemical properties of biochar and herbicides, and their interactions. Features: • Elucidates the physicochemical characteristics of biochar that affect herbicide bioavailability in soil solution • Demonstrates the remediation of herbicide-contaminated waters with the addition of biochar to avoid environmental impacts to aquatic organisms • Describes numerous agronomic and environmental benefits of biochar and its potential as a soil amendment to herbicide remediation • Includes diagrams of herbicide behavior in the environment to further the user’s knowledge Written by a team of international experts, Interactions of Biochar and Herbicides in the Environment is a valuable resource for students and professionals involved with weed science and soil pollution, and is of great interest to those concerned with pesticides and their fate in the environment.
