Book Mental Retardation and Mental Health

Download or read book Mental Retardation and Mental Health written by Jack A. Stark and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 1985, The President's Committee on Mental Retardation (PCMR) spon sored a National Strategy Conference on Mental Retardation and Mental Health in Washington, D.C. The purpose of this conference was to bring together our nation's leadership in the fields of mental retardation and mental health in order to delineate the state of the art relative to the diagnosis, care, and treatment of citizens with mental retardation/mental illness, as well as to chart a national course for the support and integration of citizens with these challenging needs into the confluence of family and community life. The President's Committee on Mental Retardation recognized that citizens with these needs constitute one of the most underserved and, at times, forgotten segments of the population. With this in mind, the PCMR called together govern mental, professional, and parental representatives from across the nation to define the nature and extent of the problem, programs, and services that promise hope for substantive improvement in the quality of life of citizens with mental retardation/mental illness.

Book Ameliorating Mental Disability

Download or read book Ameliorating Mental Disability written by Alfred A. Baumeister and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grows out of the optimistic view that mental retardation can be treated. It views mental retardation primarily as a behavioral problem. A child is diagnosed as retarded primarily because he behaves in certain maladaptive ways, not simply because he may have a chromosomal anomaly. The contributors view any intervention intended to produce adaptive changes in the behavior of the retarded as "treatment." The authors come from the fields of medicine, special education, and speech and hearing, as well as from psychology. The book is intended to help students and workers in the field apply research findings and theoretical formulations in their appraisal and treatment of mental retardation. The primary emphasis of the book is empirical. While many of the author's suggestions have not been subjected to rigorous experimental scrutiny, almost all have been derived from close examination of the research literature. A wide diversity of topics are included in this volume. Criteria employed were the relevance of the topic to the understanding and modifi cation of defective behavior; and the subject's popularity or neglect in other sources. Ameliorating Mental Disability will be of interest to medical officers in institutions for the mentally challenged, lecturers giving courses for teachers of the educationally subnormal, and to psychologists, social workers, and teachers.

Book The Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded

Download or read book The Education and Training of the Mentally Retarded written by Adrian F. Ashman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985. The field of mental handicap is a broad one encompassing the interests of many professional groups. As a result, there is a need periodically to present wide-ranging reviews of advances in the field. This is the central aim of this volume. Two chapters focus on the cognitive domain, and are especially pertinent in view of the recent release of the new Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children which uses Das’s theoretical position as its foundation. Another contribution reviews the area of non-speech communication with those with special needs, a subject of much current interest and controversy. Other chapters focus on major issues such as maladaptive behaviour and deinstitionalization and use of new technology. The book is thus likely to be relevant to all those with an interest in advances in mental handicap research.
