Book excerpt: This action research study examined factors influencing students' choice to study abroad at "Atlanta-Based College" (ABC), an access institution wishing to increase study-abroad opportunities for students, faculty, and staff. Many scholars and practitioners view the national initiative to advance study abroad as an important contributor to graduating globalized citizens. However, only a small percentage of students take advantage of such opportunities0́4at ABC and at access institutions in general. Therefore, this case study examined students' decision-making process using the Collapsed Perna integrated model of student choice as a framework. A multi-functional action research group was selected to implement the action research project and address the following primary research questions: (1) What does an access institution learn about the study-abroad decision-making process using the Collapsed Perna integrated model of student choice as a framework? (2) How does an action research project centering on study abroad in an access institution advance practice and theory at the individual, group, and system levels? The study showed that the higher education context of layer 2/3 of the Perna model was highly influential in the student-choice process. This suggest that the predominant issue preventing open-access college students from studying abroad is not student interest. Rather, it is the lack of institutionalization of study abroad. Open-access institutions ought to consider shifting their focus from student barriers to institutional barriers. This study also exemplifies the use of action research to address a systemic problem at an open-access institution.

Book excerpt: While it is assumed that American undergraduates who study abroad derive unique benefits from the experience, until now its actual impact has not been assessed. This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. Book excerpt: In light of the benefits associated with the internationalization of higher education, multiple universities, states, and countries have made it a strategic imperative to attract international students "in pursuit of development, growth, and sustainability" (Ross et al., 2013, p. 219). Despite the growing numbers of internationally mobile tertiary students, and of international students coming to the U.S. to pursue their higher education, researchers concur that we still know very little about the college choice process of international students. The purpose of the study was to identify the factors affecting international undergraduate students' process of college selection at the information gathering stage, as well as the factors that influence their ultimate decision to enroll at a particular higher education institution. The main findings of this study align with the existing research on the college choice process. They suggest that the selection of a higher education institution is similar to purchasing a high-involvement, high-investment, and high-risk service and represents a complex, multi-stage process that with various factors influencing students' decisions at its every step. International prospective students face an even greater challenge as they are deciding on the destination country of their school as well. Researchers have identified a relatively consistent set of institutional characteristics that affects students' college choice: institutional rankings and reputation, availability of desired course, program reputation, costs of attendance, facilities, and location, to name a few (Hemsley-Brown & Oplatka, 2015; Ortiz, 2015; Han, 2014; Obermeit, 2012; Rudd et al., 2012; Szekeres, 2010). This study confirmed that, depending on individual students' characteristics, such as country of origin, source of funding and program of study, various groups of prospective international undergraduate students experience different influences and are affected by different factors as they inquire about, research, and evaluate their college options. However, cost of study, program availability, and country of origin emerged as the underlining factors in international student college selection. The results of this study point out to the feasibility of student segmentation for effective marketing of higher education institutions based on various qualities relevant to different student populations (Han, 2014; Hobsons, 2014; Choudaha et al., 2012). In addition, the present study highlights the importance of broader internationalization efforts of colleges and universities, namely exchange programs and partnerships, in increasing institutional reputation and visibility, which, in turn, are seen as the main sources for attracting more international students to their campuses.

Book excerpt: This book provides a critical review of the internationalization process among higher education institutions (HEIs), taking a closer look at the case of business schools. The first part offers a novel definition of this phenomenon and examines the forces that drive international initiatives. It then examines and explains the “internationalization paradox”: the observation that despite evidence that many international initiatives fail to deliver what they promise, for the heads of HEIs they nevertheless remain at the top of the agenda. In turn, the second part of the book develops a unifying framework that identifies alternative models of internationalization and explains how they relate to one another. Based on this framework, the book presents a model of the truly global HEI, whose mission is to learn from the world rather than teach the world what it knows. The book’s central thesis is that it is unlikely that HEIs will be able to transform themselves into truly global HEIs because of historical and organizational barriers rather than a shortage of resources or a lack of visionary leadership. The book concludes that most HEIs should refrain from claiming that their aim is to become global institutions, and should instead focus on the successful implementation of an import-export model of internationalization that calls for initiatives such as the internationalization of the curriculum, the creation of student and faculty exchange programs, and the participation in international academic and research partnerships. Any attempt to transform themselves into truly global institutions is unlikely to succeed and may distract them from their fundamental mission: to educate their home-based students and help them become effective global citizens.

Book excerpt: U.S. study abroad continues to grow in the United States, with 332,727 Americans studying abroad for academic credit at their home institutions during the 2016–2017 academic year (Institute for International Education, 2018). Study abroad is recognized by many students as a valuable and increasingly essential aspect of higher education in America. Developing a better understanding of the factors that contribute to or hinder study abroad participation is crucial to expanding participation. The study examined factors that influence male and female participation at public and private Universities in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Arizona who have studied abroad or who plan to study abroad. To answer these questions, this study employed mixed methods explanatory sequential study. The quantitative data were collected through a survey and qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews expressing the participant’s experiences in study abroad. Together, the results of the quantitative and qualitative provided information on the variety of factors that influenced student participation in study abroad. The findings of this study derived from both the quantitative and qualitative data. The research questions that guided this study were guided by Fishbein and Ajzen (1975) Theory of Reasoned Action. Previous literature found that intercultural attitudes such as the openness to other cultures and diversity and intercultural communication influenced study abroad participation (Salisbury et al, 2010; Stroud, 2010). The quantitative data revealed that the cost of study abroad had an impact on student’s decision to study abroad as well as student’s whose parents or guardians have a degree. The qualitative data revealed that friends, family, and advisors had a large influence on student intent and decision to study abroad. Results of this study have implications for higher education. Recommendations for future research include a study that involves male and female students who did not elect to study abroad.
