Fern, B.S., Texas State University M.S., Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Kim Withers Seabirds are top predators at sea and are particularly sensitive to changes in the marine environment. This gives them significant potential as bioindicators of the current state of and shifts in marine ecosystems. Nest site selection is important because the demands of reproduction can be substantial and the reproducing pair is often confined to the area selected for the duration of the breeding season. Location of the nest in relation to vegetative cover, colony density and richness can strongly influence reproductive success via exposure to predators or weather events and competition for food resources and optimal nest sites. Additionally, the timing of nesting in the breeding season can influence the outcome of the breeding effort due to storm events and increasing ambient temperatures. This study defines temporal effects and correlations between reproductive success of nesting terns and skimmers and environmental characteristics of the nest site: area (ha), vegetative coverage, Spartina spp. coverage, elevation, nest density, assemblage richness and human disturbance. The four species included in this research (Forster's Tern Sterna forsteri, Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica, Least Tern Sternula antillarum and Black Skimmer Rhynchops niger) were monitored at various nesting sites during the 2012 and 2013 breeding seasons. Reproductive success of Forster's Terns seemed to be influenced by human disturbance, nest density and species richness of the nest site. Elevation and Spartina spp. coverage both positively influenced the success of Least Terns. The nesting success of Gull-billed Terns was positively correlated with elevation and species richness of the nest site, and success of Black Skimmers was negatively correlated with species richness and positively correlated with elevation. All species that nested early in the breeding season suffered nest failure due to storm events; however, Gull-billed Terns were only marginally impacted. Establishing these correlations in environmental nest site characteristics and reproductive success of nesting terns and skimmers provides a baseline understanding of tern and skimmer breeding biology in the central Coastal Bend region of Texas, which may assist future management decisions and restoration efforts. Book excerpt: "Mammalian predation, avian predation, female body condition and food availability on the breeding ground are likely the main factors influencing nesting success in tundra-nesting waterfowl. These driving factors are mediated by the primary life history characteristics; incubation behavior, female body size, nesting associations, and nest site selection. I created a conceptual model illustrating how these factors are interrelated and how they impact nest success through a variety of pathways to better understand the evolution of a species' nesting strategy and patterns observed in the field. The importance of the driving factors likely varies between sites and with the species nesting strategy. Given the conceptual model, I predicted the difference in life history characteristics and nesting success at two sites that vary in any of the four driving factors. I tested the model and associated predictions using King Eider females (Somateria spectabilis) breeding on Alaska's coastal plain by comparing selective forces influencing nesting strategies at two sites, Teshekpuk and Kuparuk, between 2002 and 2006. King Eiders fit the model with some modifications to the mediating pathways. Site differences were found in many of the reproductive parameters which matched the prediction of more available forage at Kuparuk than at Teshekpuk. No differences in either avian or mammalian predation pressure were evident between sites. Eiders at Kuparuk had higher nest survival and incubation constancy than at Teshekpuk. Body mass and nest selection were similar between sites. Although questions concerning the nesting strategies of King Eider remain, I feel that this was a valid approach to identifying selective forces impacting nesting strategies and applicable to tundra nesting waterfowl in general"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Several study areas were investigated at two Port Colborne terneries during the summers of 1973 and 1974 in an attempt to determine the influence of clutch size, time of clutch initiation, position in the colony, proximity to Ring-billed Gulls, vegetation and nesting substrate on the reproductive performance of the Common Tern. Hatching success and reproductive success (the number of chicks fledged per egg laid) were generally higher for 3-egg than 2-egg clutches but fledging (the number of chicks fledged per egg hatched) success was usually independant of clutch size. Hatching, fledging and reproductive success declined as a function of time of clutch initiation. Mean clutch sizes also generally declined as a function of time. Nests located in the center of the colony exhibited higher fledging success than those on the periphery. Rock-based clutches had a lower hatching success than clutches initiated on sand or dried vegetation. Reproductive performance did not appear to be related to proximity to Ring-billed Gulls or vegetation within the study area.

In general three egg clutches hatched better than two egg clutches and early started clutches hatched eggs and fledged chicks better than late clutches; the fledging success of two and three egg clutches was similar. Early clutches took longer to hatch and hatched more synchronously than did late clutches. While hatching success differed with nesting substrate used fledging success' did not* No relationship was found between either incubation attentiveness and reproductive success or between incubation attentiveness and clutch size* At no time did food availability appear to be a factor limiting the successful upbringing of two chick broods. While fCf chicks (i.e. chicks hatching from the last laid eggs of three egg clutches) generally survived and grew poorly relative to their brood mates they grew best when they originated from clutches that hatched relatively asynchronously.

Yes, it is true that New Guinea is a fascinating microcosm, it has fascinating birds and people, and it has large expanses of undisturbed rainforest. In the course of my work there, helping the Indonesian government and World Wildlife Fund set up a comprehensive national park system, I have been able to study animals in areas without any human population. But New Guinea has one serious drawback: it has no primates, except for humans. Thus, I come to this conference on primate conservation as an underprivileged and emotionally deprived observer, rather than as an involved participant. Nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to become interested in primate conserva tion. The public cares about primates. More specifically, to state things more realistically, many people care some of the time about some primates. Primates are rivaled only by birds, pandas, and the big cats in their public appeal. For some other groups of animals, the best we can say is that few people care about them, infrequently. For most groups of animals, no one cares about them, ever.

Many birds now hatch in managed nesting cover or in artificial nesting structures, use man-made wetlands, and winter on crowded refuges while consuming a grain diet The water they use is often limited in supply and may contain residues from its many prior users. Unfortunately, intensified management often results in new problems, among which disease is important There are many similarities between the current form of management used for some waterfowl and that used in domestic animals. In both, the objective is to maintain a healthy, productive population. Dealing with health problems in waterfowl will benefit from combining the skills of veterinary medicine and wildlife ecology. Revisiting this book after 15 years allowed me to consider changes at the interface between the two disciplines. Veterinary medicine traditionally has been concerned with the individual and with treating sick animals, while the ecologist is concerned with populations and the manager has limited interest in treating sick birds. During this period there has been a marked increase in awareness among veterinarians that they have a responsibility in wildlife and conservation biology. Curricula of many veterinary colleges now include material on non-domestic animals and attempt to put disease in an ecological context. Also during this time, waterfowl managers have become more aware of disease as a factor in population biology and there are early attempts to put numbers to "disease" in models of continental waterfowl populations.
