Book Factors Factoring GCF and LCM Workbook

Download or read book Factors Factoring GCF and LCM Workbook written by Maria Miller and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-13 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topics in Factors, Factoring, GCF, and LCM Workbook belong to a branch of mathematics known as number theory. Number theory has to do with the study of whole numbers and their special properties. We study divisibility, primes, prime factorization, the greatest common factor (GCF), and the least common multiple (LCM). This workbook is ideal for students in grades 4-6. In the first lesson, we present the concept of divisibility, which is followed by a lesson that puts into practice the common divisibility rules for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. Next, we study prime numbers. Primes are fascinating "creatures," and you can let students read more about them by accessing the Internet resources listed after the introduction in the workbook. The really important but far more advanced application of prime numbers is in cryptography. Some students might be interested in reading additional material on that subject-please see the list below for Internet resources. Later, in the lesson Finding Factors, we learn how to find all factors of a given two-digit number. This is followed by the lesson Prime Factorization, in which we use factor trees. The main application of factoring and the greatest common factor in arithmetic is in simplifying fractions, so that is why I have included a lesson on that topic. However, it is not absolutely necessary to use the GCF when simplifying fractions, and the lesson emphasizes that fact. The concepts of factoring and the GCF are important to understand because they will be carried over to algebra, where students will factor polynomials. In this workbook, we lay the groundwork for that by using the GCF to factor simple sums, such as 27 + 45. For example, a sum like 27 + 45 factors into 9(3 + 5). Similarly, the main use for the least common multiple in arithmetic is with finding the smallest common denominator for adding fractions, and we study that topic in this workbook in connection with the LCM.

Book Intermediate Mathematics Book I

Download or read book Intermediate Mathematics Book I written by Farhad Ghassemi Tari, Ph.D. and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 1420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farhad Ghassemi Tari was born in Tehran, Iran. He currently resides in Oxnard, California. The author completed his Ph. D. program in Operations Research (applied mathematical programming) and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980. Right after his graduation, he started teaching at Sharif University of Technology for thirty-six years, where he retired as an associate professor. During this time, he conducted research projects and taught several undergraduate and graduate courses, mostly in mathematical programming such as Linear Programming, Integer and Dynamic Programming, Nonlinear Programming, Sequencing and Scheduling, and Quantitative Method in Managerial Decision Making. Tari has published more than eighty papers in scientific journals and has held conference proceedings from the research results. His hobbies include reading books and listening to classical music. He also likes cooking. Intermediate Mathematics II is the complement book to the first in the pair, Mathematics I. Both texts systematically describe concepts and tools that are crucial to every college student who are willing to attain solid base for more advance mathematical topics. They aim to give the reader a comprehensive view of mathematics, its use, and its role in computation. These two books cooperatively may be different than other mathematics textbooks. Every chapter starts with a romantic poem. Researchers have discovered that contemplating poetic imagery and the multiple layers of meanings in poems activates specific areas of the brain that help us to interpret our everyday reality. In these books, every topic is assisted by several examples. After presentation of concepts and tools, each chapter is proceeded with different real-life applications of the topics. Finally, each chapter concludes with 60 multiple-choice questions to attract deeper learning and understanding of the topics studied.

Book Math Mammoth Factors Factoring

Download or read book Math Mammoth Factors Factoring written by Maria Miller and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Math Mammoth Factors & Factoring is a worktext that covers typical number theory topics for upper elementary school: divisibility rules, finding factors of a given number, prime numbers, prime factorization, the greatest common factor, and the least common multiple. These topics are usually covered in grades 4-6. The book begins with 4th grade topics, starting out with the concept of divisibility and the common divisibility rules. The lesson Prime Numbers brings out the concept of a prime number as one that is only divisible by 1 and by itself. Armed with the knowledge about divisibility, students now learn how to find factors of a given two-digit number in the lesson Finding Factors. The following lesson, Primes and Finding Factors, is a review lesson about factors, primes, and divisibility rules, originally intended for beginning of 5th grade. You can use it as a review of the first four lessons of this book, or for students that have some knowledge of these topics already. The next two lessons delve into prime factorization using a factor tree. The first lesson on the topic only uses two-digit numbers. In the latter, students are introduced the sieve of Eratosthenes and they factorize three-digit and larger numbers. The last topics in the book are the greatest common factor (GCF), the least common multiple (LCM), and factoring sums, intended mainly for 6th grade. Factoring sums means writing a sum such as 42 + 18 as 6(7 + 3). We first find a common factor of 42 and 18 (which is 6), and use that to factorize the sum. The lesson only deals with numeric examples, but it is actually preparing students for algebra, where the same process is done with variables; for example x2 + 2x is factored as x(x + 2). The book ends in a review lesson. Answers are appended.
