This generates changes in family, schools, the media, etc. New technologies are creating virtual environments to manage learning and academic achievement, and this is a new challenge to approach formal and informal education. In the last few decades, teachers, families, and educational administrators had very well-defined fields of action and roles to play. Now, these roles are disfigured, and influences from all agents are arguable and more difficult to face. At this current stage, problems sometimes appear that require different forms of intervention. Some of the problems are violence towards people; child abuse; drug abuse at increasingly early ages; integration problems due to immigration; dropping out of school; and typical problems related to student development, personality, disabilities, social and psychical maladjustment, teenagers socioaffective relationships, etc. Research on school success and failure has a long history, but there is still no agreement concerning the prevalence of these variables to explain academic achievement, the relationship between those variables, and which other variables modulate their level of impact. For many years, cognitive psychology has emphasized cognitive function as the most relevant for learning in school. However, recent studies highlight the importance of motivational and affective functions in building consistent models to explain learning and academic achievement. This change of perspective, from the classical cognitive model to a self-regulated learning model, has implied a new orientation in the research of the factors involved in school success and failure. Self-regulated learning models try to integrate students cognitive, socioaffective, and behavioral aspects. These models describe the different components involved in successful learning at all school stages, explaining reciprocal relationships between those components and directly relating learning to personal achievement, motivation, volition, and emotions. With this new paradigm, students not only contribute to strengthening their intelligence, but also their motivational and emotional qualities, all related to achieving personal balance. This book presents studies, ideas, and recommendations to shed light on the complex educational world. Education has limits and difficulties, but it is also the only instrument that can develop students potential into personal success.

Even as the number of Latinas/os attending college has actually increased steadily over the last few decades, the proportional representation of Latino males continues to slide relative to their Latina female counterparts. The question of why Latino males are losing ground in accessing higher education—relative to their peers—is an important and complex one, and it lies at the heart of this book. There are several broad themes highlighted, catalogued along with the four dimensions of policy, theory, research, and practice. The contributors to this book present new research on factors that inhibit or promote Latino success in both four-year institutions and community colleges in order to inform both policy and practice. They explore the social-cultural factors, peer dynamics, and labor force demands that may be perpetuating the growing gender gap, and consider what lessons can be learned from research on the success of Latinas. This book also closely examines key practices that enable first generation Latino male undergraduates to succeed which may seem counterintuitive to institutional expectations and preconceived notions of student behavior. Using narrative data, the book also explores the role of family in persistence; outlines how Latino men conceptualize fulfilling expectations, negotiate the emasculization of the educational process, and how they confront racialization in the pursuit of a higher education; uncovers attitudes to help-seeking that are detrimental to their success: and analyzes how those who succeed and progress in college apply their social capital – whether aspirational, navigational, social, linguistic, familial, or resistant.While uncovering the lack of awareness at all levels of our colleges and universities about the depth and severity of the challenges facing Latino males, this book provides the foundation for rethinking policy; challenges leaders to institutionalize male-focused programs and services; and presents data to inform needed changes in practice for outreach and retention.

This is reflected by governments’ relatively large investments in improving the quality of mathematics education and extending it to marginalized and underprivileged groups. The purpose of Toward Equity in Quality in Mathematics Education is four-fold. First, the book examines the constructs of equity and quality and their interdependence from different perspectives. Second, it develops a conceptual framework for studying and analyzing the two constructs. Third, it examines, consolidates, and re-structures the literature on equity and quality in mathematics education. Finally, using data from TIMSS 2003, the book investigates the within and across country impact of the different equity-related factors on mathematics achievement in a sample of countries representative of worldwide geographical and cultural regions. Tests play a role in those changes by providing evidence of the diverse achievement and proficiency of women and men. They aid the learning process and reflect inequalities in opportunity to learn and participate. In addition, they provide useful information in considering what alternatives in education and work make most sense for individuals and influence views about groups of students, educational programs, and a wide range of issues. For all of these reasons, it is important that tests assess fairly and reflect accurately the ways young people are and are not achieving as well as desired. The test performance of women and men is a research topic of historical interest and has received much attention in recent years. Because of this increased interest, there is a great deal of new research and data available. The purpose of the study presented in this volume was to review this new information with two objectives in mind: *to clarify patterns of gender difference and similarity in test performance and related achievements, and *to see what implications those findings might have for fair assessment and, as a corollary, examine the assessment process as a possible source of gender differences. This study is interested in tests used in education to assess developed knowledge and skill. In order to gain a broader view of gender similarity and difference, the contributors looked at other types of measures and other characteristics of young women and men. Their hope is to contribute to a firmer basis for insuring fairness in tests--an objective which is particularly important as the field moves increasingly to new forms of assessment in which there is less experience.
