Book excerpt: A crack-growth model of stress corrosion cracking has been successfully applied to predict times-to-failure of zircaloy specimens exposed to iodine vapor. Data for two types of tests were analyzed using the model. The first was a variable loading experiment in which failure occurred after the specimen had been subjected to two distinct stresses in succession. The second was a series of tests in which surface roughness, and probably residual stress as well, was reduced by chemical polishing of the specimens. The success of the crack growth model in dealing with these situations suggests that crack propagation rather than crack initiation is the rate-controlling step in iodine stress corrosion cracking of zircaloy. Furthermore, the metal in the vicinity of the growing crack is apparently so embrittled by iodine that a model originally intended for ceramics applies.

Book excerpt: A fracture mechanics model is presented for iodine-induced stress corrosion cracking in Zircaloy tubing. The model utilizes a power law to relate crack extension velocity to stress intensity factor, a hyperbolic tangent function for the influence of iodine concentration, and an exponential function for the influence of temperature and material strength. Comparisons of predicted to measured failure times show that predicted times are within a factor of two of the measured times for a majority of the specimens considered.

First, those which, like iodine vapor at room temperature, cause crack propagation in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens but do not initiate cracks in smooth specimens. These are solvents which form no, or only weak complexes with iodine. A second group of solvents (alcohols) both initiate cracking in smooth specimens and cause crack propagation in DCB specimens. These are solvents which form strong complexes with iodine. In addition to these two groups there are a few solvents in which neither crack propagation in DCB specimens nor cracking of smooth specimens occur.
