Faculty members' use of an e-learning system at Saudi universities concerns researchers, academics, and practitioners. Although most Saudi universities have an e-learning system, few faculty members are using an e-learning system. The Saudi Arabia Ministry of Education has seen massive investment toward the educational improvement in e-learning systems through building and maintaining an advanced level of Information Technology infrastructure, improving the utilization and flexibility of Information Technology resources, and enhancing and developing the privacy and security of e-learning systems. While previous research has examined factors affecting the acceptance of e-learning, few studies have examined the security of e-learning systems. Previous studies indicate the security of e-learning systems is important for motivating faculty to use e-learning systems due to issues of trust. Previous research has also examined the positive impact on users' attitudes toward using e-learning systems by two factors: perceived ease of use (PEOU) and perceived usefulness (PU). The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between faculty members' intent to use (ITU) the e-learning system at their university and their demographic characteristics, perceptions toward the existing e-learning system security, PEOU, and PU of the e-learning system in one of largest universities at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), King Faisal University (KFU), using an online survey available in Arabic and English. A sample of 219 faculty members from KFU completed the online survey. Results found faculty members' ITU the e-learning system at KFU was influenced by their previous teaching experience with an e-learning system, the ability to change the user password in the e-learning system, and the PU of the e-learning system. The study findings encourage researchers to study other factors that may influence faculty members' ITU the e-learning system. Furthermore, the findings will help Information Technology practitioners, especially e-learning systems' developers, to design and develop systems that will be more likely accepted and useful by the University faculty members.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the adoption of learning management systems (LMS) in higher education institutions. It presents influential predictors that may impact instructors’ behavioral intention to adopt learning management systems in the context of Arab culture, as well as a unique model of technology acceptance that draws on and combines previous technology adoption models (i.e., a modified unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model – UTAUT2). Moreover, this study extends the UTAUT2 model by including Hofstede’s (1980) cultural dimensions, and technology awareness as the moderators of the model. It also describes the explanatory technique approach used to collect quantitative data from the instructors at higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia and were analyzed with structural equation modeling using SPSS/Amos software. The findings revealed that facilitating conditions were the strongest predictor of behavioral intention to adopt an LMS, followed by performance expectancy and hedonic motivation, technology awareness, and cultural dimensions exerted a moderating influence on instructors’ behavioral intention to use LMS in their teaching. By including new constructs, this becomes the first study of its kind exploring instructors’ use of LMS in Higher Educational Institutions of Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Middle East. It offers practical insights for a broad range of researchers and professionals at higher education institutions and serves as a reference guide for designers of learning management systems (e.g., blackboard systems), policymakers, and the Ministry of Education staff.

Book excerpt: Despite the benefits online education provides, some faculty still consider online teaching less effective than traditional teaching and are not convinced they want to be involved in distance education (Blin & Munro, 2008; Bolliger & Wasilik, 2009; Chen & Chen, 2006). In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the movement toward online education is slow and not promising due to several factors that may relate to faculty, learners, and institutions. The aim of this study was to investigate faculty members' intentions to teach online at the University of Hail in KSA based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Additionally, this study assessed the effect of demographic characteristics (age, gender, computer use, and years of experience) on attitude toward behavior, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control and whether these variables significantly moderate the relationship between faculty members' 1) attitude toward behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and 2) their behavioral intention (BI) to teach online. This study employed a quantitative research methodology to address the research questions. The results of this study indicated that the combined TPB constructs (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) significantly predicted faculty members' intention to teach online and approximately 39.1% of the variance in the faculty's behavioral intention to teach online was explained by these three predictors. Book excerpt: This research aimed at investigating the factors influencing students' intention to adopt e-learning as a supplementary tool (BIS) and for distance education (BID). A model based on the theory of Planned Behaviour (Ajzen, 1985) was developed in which the students' attitude (AT), Subjective Norm (SN) and Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC) were proposed as determinants of the students' behavioural intention to adopt e-learning (BI). The model hypothesised that gender and internet experience moderate the effects of these factors. The model also suggested some factors as antecedents to AT, SN and PBC. The study adopted a mixed methods approach, involving two small-scale qualitative phases and one major quantitative phase. The samples were drawn from students at a Saudi University. The results revealed that the model explained 20% of the students' BIS and 41% of the students' BID. Moreover, the results revealed that PBC, or the students' perceptions of the existence of constraints that can hamper their adoption of e-learning, was the most significant factor influencing their BIS and BID. Furthermore, for the adoption of e-learning to supplement the face-to-face study, SN or the students' perceptions of the social pressures put on them to adopt e-learning, was the second important factor influencing their decision, followed by AT. On the other hand, in the context of adopting e-learning for distance education, AT was more significant than the students' SN. In addition, gender was found to only moderate the link between PBC and BID. Internet experience was found to moderate the link between AT and BIS as well as the link between PBC and BID. The findings showed that e-learning perceived Ease of Use, Usefulness, Interactivity and Flexibility determined AT. The beliefs of the students' peers, family and instructors were found to shape their SN. Perceived Accessibility was the most significant antecedent of PBC, followed by Internet Self-Efficacy and finally, University Support. Moreover, the students did not show differences in BIS when they were compared, based on some selected demographics, while they showed differences in BID when they were compared on the same demographics. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted with six students to shed light on some of the results.

Book excerpt: Information technology and/or computer-mediated communication (CMC) have become more complex than ever with the progress of science and educational technology. Advancements in technology, such as computers and telecommunications, have changed the way people work and how they are educated. Proper assessment is required to determine the strengths and weaknesses of any instructional delivery system. While a limited number of researchers have compared the differences of e¬learning courses to traditional courses, the study addresses factors other than student outcome (i.e. student satisfaction, locus of control and/or goal orientation, anxiety, self¬efficacy and motivation) in their learning environments. Advances in technology also allow higher education to go “beyond the traditional classroom and deliver instruction and training to geographically diverse audiences locally, nationally and even internationally” (Rockwell, Schauer, Fritz, & Marx, 1999). With advances in distance education technology and an increase in demand for distance education, faculty members remain a key element in the process of teaching and learning (Rockwell et al., 1999). Therefore, it is necessary to focus on faculty members’ attitudes and specific factors (i.e. faculty members motivation towards online courses, their description of the concept of online courses, their plans for implementing online courses, faculty promotion, as they need to be qualified to teach in an online environment, faculty members tenure, …etc.) affecting faculty members’ participation in online courses. As institutions of higher education launch online courses and e-learning offerings, it is important to identify factors that influence students and instructors participation in e¬learning education. Information obtained from this study may help institutions of higher education, faculty, administrators and researchers better understand the perspectives associated with students and faculty members in the different learning environments.
