Book Air Entrainment in Free surface Flow

Download or read book Air Entrainment in Free surface Flow written by I.R. Wood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is aimed at the practising hydraulic engineer. Work on it commenced at Professor Naudascher's instigation in 1982. Over the next six years all or some of the authors discussed progress at IAHR sponsored conferences at Esslingen, Melbourne, Lausanne and Beijing. With the authors scattered throughout the world, and all with other responsibilities, progress was bound to be slow. Completion was further delayed by the great increase in published technical literature in this area over the period 1982-1988. This literature continues to expand and with it our understanding of the air water flow phenomena. The monograph must therefore be seen as the authors' views on the state of the art around 1988. More recent references have been included for completeness. This monograph has been a joint effort with most authors making suggestions and contributions to more than one chapter. Nevertheless, the chapter authors are primarily responsible for the material in their chapters.Throughout the monograph symbols are defined when they are fist introduced and a list of symbols is included at the end of each chapter. Many other people have contributed to this monograph, but the authors would particularly like to acknowledge the assistance given by Professor John McNown who has read, commented on and improved the style of the complete monograph.

Book Air Bubble Entrainment in Free Surface Turbulent Shear Flows

Download or read book Air Bubble Entrainment in Free Surface Turbulent Shear Flows written by Hubert Chanson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-10-11 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops an analysis of the air entrainment processes in free-surface flows. These flows are investigated as homogeneous mixtures with variable density. Several types of air-water free-surface flows are studied: plunging jet flows, open channel flows, and turbulent water jets discharging into air. Experimental observations reported by the author confirm the concept that the air-water mixture behaves as a homogeneous compressible fluid in each case. This book will be of great interest to professionals working in many fields of engineering: chemical, civil, environmental, mechanical, mining, metallurgy, and nuclear. Covers new information on the air-water flow field: air bubble distributions, air-water velocity profiles, air bubble sizes and bubble-turbulence interactions Features new analysis is developed for each flow configuration and compared successfully with model and prototype data Includes over 372 references and more than 170 figures with over 60 photographs Presents useful information for design engineers and research-and-development scientists who require a better understanding of the fluid mechanics of air-water flows

Book Free Surface Hydraulics

Download or read book Free Surface Hydraulics written by Dr J M Townson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free-Surface Hydraulics is a unified, pragmatic account of the water surface and its underlying mechanics. Based on the author's 30 years experience of research and teaching in civil engineering hydraulics, this text is designed to help students achieve a coherent understanding More...of a subject often obscured by empirical detail and unstructured approaches. The text leads progressively from hydrostatics, through steady and unsteady flows, to waves and tides. The author draws a careful distinction between kinematic and dynamic motions - the latter he treats at some length by the method of characteristics, regarded as one of the more rigorous approaches to unsteady flow. A special feature is the final chapter, devoted to the disruption of free surfaces by air and bubble motion, especially in pipes.

Book Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology VIII

Download or read book Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology VIII written by M. Yang and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 1528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us are dependent on a built environment constructed and maintained by civil and hydraulic engineers, and for those working in these fields, keeping up to date with the latest technological developments is vital for the safe and efficient design and operation of this infrastructure. This book presents the proceedings of HCET 2023, the 8th International Technical Conference on Frontiers of Hydraulic and Civil Engineering Technology, held from 25-27 September 2023 in Wuhan, China. HCET is an international conference which aims to enhance the development of hydraulic and civil engineering in China, with a focus on high-end, intelligent and green technologies. It seeks to do this by consolidating global wisdom and achievements and providing scientific support. HCET also offers an excellent opportunity for scientists, researchers and engineers from around the world to exchange their findings and discuss developments, establishing a basis for national and international collaboration. A total of 316 contributions were received for the 2023 edition, of which 187 were ultimately accepted after a rigorous review process and checks for quality and plagiarism. Topics covered include the research and development of concrete structure design and analysis; structural mechanics and structural engineering; building and future materials; hydraulic engineering; geological exploration and earthquake engineering; building technology; urban planning; road, bridge and traffic engineering; energy infrastructure; environmental engineering and advanced engineering technologies, and interdisciplinary sciences and applications. Covering a wide range of subjects related to hydraulic engineering and civil engineering technology and associated transdisciplinary sciences, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book Flood Risk and Social Justice

Download or read book Flood Risk and Social Justice written by Zoran Vojinovic and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood Risk and Social Justice is a response to the rising significance of floods and flood-related disasters worldwide, as an initiative to promote a socially just approach to the problems of flood risk. It integrates the human-social and the technological components to provide a holistic view. This book treats flooding as a multi-dimensional human and natural world tragedy that must be accommodated using all the social and technological means that can be mobilised before, during and after the flooding event. It covers socially just flood risk mitigation practices which necessitate a wide range of multidisciplinary approaches, starting from social and wider environmental needs, including feedback cycles between human needs and technological means. Flood Risk and Social Justice looks at how to judge whether a risk is acceptable or not by addressing an understanding of social and phenomenological considerations rather than simple calculations of probabilities multiplied by unwanted outcomes and their balancing between costs and benefits. It is argued that the present ‘flood management’ practice should be largely replaced by the social justice approach where particular attention is given to deciding what is the right thing to do within a much wider context. Thus it insists upon the validity of modes of human understanding which cannot be addressed within the limited context of modern science. Flood Risk and Social Justice is written to support a wide range of audiences and seeks to improve the dialogue between researchers and practitioners from different disciplines (including post-graduate engineering, environmental and social science students, industry practitioners, academics, planners, environmental advocacy groups and environmental law professionals) who have a strong interest in a new kind of social justice work that can act as a continuous counter-balance to the various mechanisms that unceasingly give rise to profound injustices. More information about this book can be found in this article written for the WaterWiki by the author: http://www.iwawaterwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Articles/FloodRiskandSocialJustice Authors: Zoran Vojinovic is Associate Professor at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands, with almost 20 years of consulting and research experience in various aspects of water industry in New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe, Central/South America and the Caribbean. Michael B. Abbott is Emeritus Professor at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, the Netherlands, and a Director of the European Institute for Industrial Leadership in Brussels. He founded and developed the disciplines of Computational Hydraulics and Hydroinformatics and co-founded, the Journal of Hydroinformatics with Professor Roger Falconer.
