Book excerpt: This book analyzes the factors and mechanisms involved in the development and adaptation of children and adolescents to adverse and risky contexts in four Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico. The experience of growing up in contexts of poverty and social vulnerability is a risk factor for child and adolescent development which may produce a series of negative effects in their adulthood, including mental disorders. This is a global concern, but so far the majority of literature about the topic has focused on developed countries. This volume aims to enrich the international literature by presenting results of research carried out in developing countries, showing how children and adolescents deal with adverse and risky contexts and analyzing both negative outcomes and the development of resilience and coping strategies. The studies gathered in this volume are theoretically grounded on systemic and ecological models which analyze developmental trajectories and outcomes taking into account the interaction of different ecological systems, such as the individual, the family, the school and the wider society. Departing from this theoretical framework, the chapters in this volume analyze the risk factors posed to child and adolescent development by adverse and risky social contexts and present evidence-based interventions aimed at both preventing negative outcomes and helping children and adolescents develop coping strategies to deal with adverse situations, such as poverty and social marginalization. Child and Adolescent Development in Risky Adverse Contexts: A Latin American Perspective will be of interest to developmental, clinical, health, and educational psychologists, as well as social workers, directly working or doing research with children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this Research Topic is to determine the conditions that place students at risk of school failure, identifying student and context variables. In spite of the fact that there is currently little doubt about how one learns and how to teach, in some countries of the “developed world,” there is still there is a high rate of school failure. Although the term “school failure” is a very complex construct, insofar as its causes, consequences, and development, from the field of educational psychology, the construct “student engagement” has recently gained special interest in an attempt to deal with the serious problem of school failure. School engagement builds on the anatomy of the students’ involvement in school and describes their feelings, behaviors, and thoughts about their school experiences. So, engagement is an important component of students’ school experience, with a close relationship to achievement and school failure. Children who self-set academic goals, attend school regularly and on time, behave well in class, complete their homework, and study at home are likely to interact adequately with the school social and physical environments and perform well in school. In contrast, children who miss school are more likely to display disruptive behaviors in class, miss homework frequently, exhibit violent behaviors on the playground, fail subjects, be retained and, if the behaviors persist, quit school. Moreover, engagement should also be considered as an important school outcome, eliciting more or less supportive reactions from educators. For example, children who display school-engaged behaviors are likely to receive motivational and instructional support from their teachers. The opposite may also be true. But what makes student engage more or less? The relevant literature indicates that personal variables (e.g., sensory, motor, neurodevelopmental, cognitive, motivational, emotional, behavior problems, learning difficulties, addictions), social and/or cultural variables (e.g., negative family conditions, child abuse, cultural deprivation, ethnic conditions, immigration), or school variables (e.g., coexistence at school, bullying, cyberbullying) may concurrently hinder engagement, preventing the student from acquiring the learnings in the same conditions as the rest of the classmates.

As a collective endeavour, this book focuses on the ways that gender, along with race/ethnicity and class, influence the design, standardisation and circulation of drugs throughout several highly medicalised countries throughout the twentieth century and until the twenty-first. Fourteen authors from different European and non-European countries analyse the extent to which the dominant ideas and values surrounding masculinity and femininity have contributed to shape the research, prescription and use of drugs by women and men within particular social and cultural contexts. New and lesser-known, gender-specific issues in lifestyles and social practices associated with pharmaceutical technologies are analysed, as is the manner in which they intervene in life experiences such as reproduction, sexual desire, childbirth, depression and happiness. The processes of prescribing, selling, marketing and accepting or forbidding drugs is also examined, as is the contribution of gendered medical practices to the medicalisation and growing consumption of drugs by women. Gender relations and other hierarchies are involved as both causes and consequences of drug cultures, and of the history and social life of gender in contemporary drug production, use and consumption. Part one is concerned with stressful person-environment interactions and the ways stress impact upon individual and group functioning in different life phases. For example, sources of adolescents' stress may include school demands and frustrations due to sexuality, while stress among the elderly might be caused by negative thoughts and feelings about physical deterioration and social isolation. Part two is dedicated to recent research on health promotion. Over time, stress and anxiety may lower resistance and make people more vulnerable to illness. From that perspective, antecedents, side effects and consequences of stress that may cause limitations in physical and psychological functioning are investigated, leading to a variety of serious health problems.
