Book excerpt: An exploration of what it means to be fabulous--and why eccentric style, fashion, and creativity are more political than ever Prince once told us not to hate him 'cause he's fabulous. But what does it mean to be fabulous? Is fabulous style only about labels, narcissism, and selfies--looking good and feeling gorgeous? Or can acts of fabulousness be political gestures, too? What are the risks of fabulousness? And in what ways is fabulous style a defiant response to the struggles of living while marginalized? madison moore answers these questions in a timely and fascinating book that explores how queer, brown, and other marginalized outsiders use ideas, style, and creativity in everyday life. Moving from catwalks and nightclubs to the street, moore dialogues with a range of fabulous and creative powerhouses, including DJ Vjuan Allure, voguing superstar Lasseindra Ninja, fashion designer Patricia Field, performance artist Alok Vaid-Menon, and a wide range of other aesthetic rebels from the worlds of art, fashion, and nightlife. In a riveting synthesis of autobiography, cultural analysis, and ethnography, moore positions fabulousness as a form of cultural criticism that allows those who perform it to thrive in a world where they are not supposed to exist.

  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book Played Out on the Strip written by Janis L. McKay and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1940 to 1989, nearly every hotel on the Las Vegas Strip employed a full-time band or orchestra. After the late 1980s, when control of the casinos changed hands from independent owners to corporations, almost all of these musicians found themselves unemployed. Played Out on the Strip traces this major shift in the music industry through extensive interviews with former musicians. In 1989, these soon-to-be unemployed musicians went on strike. Janis McKay charts the factors behind this strike, which was precipitated by several corporate hotel owners moving to replace live musicians with synthesizers and taped music, a strategic decision made in order to save money. The results of this transitional period in Las Vegas history were both long-lasting and far-reaching for the entertainment industry. With its numerous oral history interviews and personal perspectives from the era, this book will appeal to readers interested in Las Vegas history, music history, and labor issues.

  • Author : Tom Geue
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2019-09-17
  • ISBN : 0674242408
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Author Unknown written by Tom Geue and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the darker corners of ancient Rome to spotlight the strange sorcery of anonymous literature. From Banksy to Elena Ferrante to the unattributed parchments of ancient Rome, art without clear authorship fascinates and even offends us. Classical scholarship tends to treat this anonymity as a problem or game—a defect to be repaired or mystery to be solved. Author Unknown is the first book to consider anonymity as a site of literary interest rather than a gap that needs filling. We can tether each work to an identity, or we can stand back and ask how the absence of a name affects the meaning and experience of literature. Tom Geue turns to antiquity to show what the suppression or loss of a name can do for literature. Anonymity supported the illusion of Augustus’s sprawling puppet mastery (Res Gestae), controlled and destroyed the victims of a curse (Ovid’s Ibis), and created out of whole cloth a poetic persona and career (Phaedrus’s Fables). To assume these texts are missing something is to dismiss a source of their power and presume that ancient authors were as hungry for fame as today’s. In this original look at Latin literature, Geue asks us to work with anonymity rather than against it and to appreciate the continuing power of anonymity in our own time.

Book Secret Historian

Download or read book Secret Historian written by Justin Spring and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2010 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction Drawn from the secret, never-before-seen diaries, journals, and sexual records of the novelist, poet, and university professor Samuel M. Steward, Secret Historian is a sensational reconstruction of one of the more extraordinary hidden lives of the twentieth century. An intimate friend of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder, Steward maintained a secret sex life from childhood on, and documented these experiences in brilliantly vivid (and often very funny) detail. After leaving the world of academe to become Phil Sparrow, a tattoo artist on Chicago's notorious South State Street, Steward worked closely with Alfred Kinsey on his landmark sex research. During the early 1960s, Steward changed his name and identity once again, this time to write exceptionally literate, upbeat pro-homosexual pornography under the name of Phil Andros. Until today he has been known only as Phil Sparrow—but an extraordinary archive of his papers, lost since his death in 1993, has provided Justin Spring with the material for an exceptionally compassionate and brilliantly illuminating life-and-times biography. More than merely the story of one remarkable man, Justin Spring's Secret Historian is a moving portrait of homosexual life long before Stonewall and gay liberation.

Book Tiberius and His Age

Download or read book Tiberius and His Age written by Edward Champlin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As any reader of Tacitus' Annals or Suetonius' biographies knows, Rome's second emperor was a mere hypocrite when he was not a thoroughgoing villain-treacherous, grasping, depraved, and vindictive. But in Tiberius and His Age, Edward Champlin develops the overlapping themes of luxury, sex, power, and, especially, myth to show that the man was-and was seen by contemporaries to be-a far more complex and recognizable human being than the villainous hypocrite of hostile tradition. As worthy successors to the landmark Nero, the nine studies gathered here draw on vast amounts and diverse kinds of evidence, much of which will be unknown even to specialists, to present lucid arguments and startling new perspectives on Tiberius and the culture of his times. The first four chapters survey Tiberius's standing as a figure out of folkore in the popular imagination and his own quite conscious use of themes from myth to consolidate his power. The next two chapters show how striking but ultimately incoherent fictions of sexual depravity shaped the image of the emperor that our literary sources passed along to later generations. And in the book's concluding section, portraits of three men in Tiberius' orbit-the gourmands Asellius Sabinus and Marcus Apicius and the emperor's lieutenant, Sejanus-show how even lesser figures can throw new light on this pivotal period in Rome's history, and our own"--
