Book excerpt: An amateur sleuth with a bed and breakfast, an unfriendly resident found dead, and a handsome detective who helps unravel the mystery in the cozy beach town of Sweetfern Harbor. Brenda Sheffield can’t believe her luck when she finds out that the family business, The Sheffield Bed and Breakfast, has been handed down to her upon the death of a relative. For too long, she’s been idle as an assistant to a PI – a new challenge is precisely what she needs. Uprooting to the idyllic village of Sweetfern Harbor was tough, but it doesn’t take long for Brenda to fall for the brightly painted shopfronts and the friendly residents. However, there’s always one who spoils the bouquet. Lady Pendleton owns half of the buildings in Sweetfern Harbor, and she rules with a green-fingered fist. With a personal vendetta against everyone, she ruthlessly raises rent and rates – resulting in turning many people out of house, home, and business. One day, her flashy car pulls up outside The Sheffield Bed and Breakfast, but Brenda is shocked to find her slumped over the wheel and failing to respond. The coroner pronounces her dead at the scene, ruling it as a homicide. With the entire town a suspect, Brenda isn’t sure whom to turn to since crime isn’t usually a factor in this New England town. Enter the handsome Detective Mac Rivers, who must unravel the twists and turns of this murder – but can an outsider’s sleuthing experience help bring the perpetrator to justice? Or will they slip out of sight unnoticed – or strike down another victim? Book The Internet in China

Download or read book The Internet in China written by Zixue Tai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet in China examines the cultural and political ramifications of the Internet for Chinese society. The rapid growth of the Internet has been enthusiastically embraced by the Chinese government, but the government has also rushed to seize control of the virtual environment. Individuals have responded with impassioned campaigns against official control of information. The emergence of a civil society via cyberspace has had profound effects upon China--for example, in 2003, based on an Internet campaign, the Chinese Supreme People's Court overturned the ruling of a local court for the first time since the Communist Party came to power in 1949. The important question this book asks is not whether the Internet will democratize China, but rather in what ways the Internet is democratizing communication in China. How is the Internet empowering individuals by fostering new types of social spaces and redefining existing social relations?

Book New Media Old News

Download or read book New Media Old News written by Natalie Fenton and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2009-09-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have new communications technologies revitalised the public sphere, or become the commercial tool for an increasingly un-public, undemocratic news media? Are changing journalistic practices damaging the nature of news, or are new media allowing journalists to do more journalism and to engage the public more effectively? With massive changes in the media environment and its technologies, interrogating the nature of news journalism is one of the most urgent tasks we face in defining the public interest today. The implications are serious, not just for the future of the news, but also for the practice of democracy. In a thorough empirical investigation of journalistic practices in different news contexts, New Media, Old News explores how technological, economic and social changes have reconfigured news journalism, and the consequences of these transformations for a vibrant democracy in our digital age. The result is a piercing examination of why understanding news journalism matters now more than ever. It is essential reading for students and scholars of journalism and new media.

Book User Comments and Moderation in Digital Journalism

Download or read book User Comments and Moderation in Digital Journalism written by Thomas B. Ksiazek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an authoritative discussion of user comments and moderation in digital journalism, examining how user comments have disrupted the field of journalism and how a growing number of news organizations have abandoned commenting features altogether. Making a broad argument concerning user commentary as a manifestation of user engagement and public deliberation, User Comments and Moderation in Digital Journalism: Disruptive Engagement conceptualizes the act of commenting as interactive engagement and participation in a virtual public sphere. The book also explores the organizational policies that have the potential to disrupt – as well as improve – the quality of user discussions. Ultimately, strategies are proposed for managing and improving user comments and encouraging more productive public deliberation in digital journalism. This engaging discussion of a key development in digital journalism is a valuable resource for academics and researchers in the areas of journalism, media and communication studies.

Book Digital Journalism Drones and Automation

Download or read book Digital Journalism Drones and Automation written by Cate Dowd and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""The next generation of systems and practices in journalism will require knowledge beyond online editing techniques, aggregation, social media flow and assumptions about fake news. The profession may also want to aim for ethical practices in journalism to be embedded in algorithms for new systems. Engagement in an early design phase may also be useful for scoping reforms for online and social media legislation. However, these pursuits require higher levels of understanding about backend data and online systems, and development of formal vocabulary for journalism concepts and practices. This new domain knowledge should also be expressed in ontological models, informed by participatory approaches. Some problems to be addressed include editorial control issues and fair distribution of news stories and other challenges of data and online systems. Problematic issues should also include the lack of transparency in corporate data sharing arrangements. The semantic language for future systems for journalism will be distinctly different from the vocabulary and classifications used for online news tags. It will also need to distinguish the vocabulary for social media things in context of journalism. Most importantly, the design of new systems will need participatory and semantic design methods that can support the need for high-level knowledge of data and semantic search methods. The influence of social media partnerships in news and backend data sharing are other problem areas. Data via integrated media systems in news organisations flows onto cloud servers where it is processed with a myriad of methods. These hubs are for the new generation of data sharing, where large volumes of data are sorted and processed at accelerated speeds, for a range of purposes. Cloud servers are now literally the highest levels of digital convergence, other than legislation, and the latter is lagging. This is where data is shared for advertising, social media benefits and other domain purposes. Integrated media systems bring benefits for global networked news media organisations, but they also enable more monetisation of data via cloud servers. ""--

Book The Politics of News

Download or read book The Politics of News written by Doris A. Graber and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Books on journalists typically focus on the dynamics of the newsmaking process. The Politics of News: The News of Politics extends this examination to explore the struggle between journalists, political actors, and the public for control of the news in democratic countries. The book shows how the news media function as an intermediary between governments and citizens, as well as between political actors (such as parties and interest groups) and the public. Essays present a diversity of views and are written by a distinguished group of authors that includes such luminaries as Jim Lehrer, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Robert Picard, and Andrew Kohut. The Politics of News is policy-oriented. By diagnosing problems faced by those whose influence affects newsmaking in both existing and emerging democracies, authors generate ideas about possible reforms. Several chapters offer comparative analysis that offer students insight into the impact of cultural factors on newsmaking. Accessible yet sophisticated, this anticipated second edition covers significant issues surrounding political news, ranging from the limits of press freedom during times of war and the implications of media concentration for democratic participation, to the ingenious ways that governments and interest groups draw attention to their concerns.
