Book F 111 EF 111 Units in Combat

Download or read book F 111 EF 111 Units in Combat written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Dynamics F-111 was one of the most technically innovative designs among military aircraft, introducing the variable-sweep wing, terrain-following radar, military-rated afterburning turbofan engines and a self-contained escape module among other features. Designed as a cost-saving, multi-role interceptor, naval fighter and strike bomber, its evolution prioritised the latter role and it became the USAF's most effective long-range strike aircraft during three decades of service. Rushed into combat in Vietnam before some of its structural issues were fully understood, the type suffered several early losses and gained an unfairly negative reputation that dogged it for the rest of its career, and restricted funding for more advanced versions of the design. However, in Operation Linebacker in 1972 the F-111 flew 4000 nocturnal under-the-radar missions, delivering, with unprecedented accuracy, many decisive blows that would have resulted in heavy losses for any other attack aircraft.

Book F 100 Super Sabre Units of the Vietnam War

Download or read book F 100 Super Sabre Units of the Vietnam War written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The F-100 Super Sabre may have been superseded by the superior technology of the F-105 Thunderchief and the F-4 Phantom by the Vietnam War it remained in service. The Super Sabre was deployed as an air defence fighter, and was later given nuclear capability. The F-100's toughness, adaptability and reliability made it ideal for the incessant missions that were demanded by close support and counter-insurgency missions. 242 Super Sabres and 87 aircrew were lost during the war but their role, particularly in developing the tactics used for discovering and destroying SAM sites, was invaluable. This book describes some of the most important actions that the F-100 took part in, looks at the pilots who flew it and analyses the impact of the aircraft on the war.

Book F 104 Starfighter Units in Combat

Download or read book F 104 Starfighter Units in Combat written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title covers the technical characteristics of the F-104 Starfighter, one of the most widely-used and popular aircraft in history. Download or read book F 111 Aardvark written by John Gourley and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The General Dynamics F-111 was one of aviation history's most promising planes when it came out in the early 1960s. Despite a rocky service career, political changes in how the military acquired its weaponry, and the addition of too much new technology, the plane provided a credible frontline deterrent to NATO in the Cold War era and was used to great effect in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Many of the challenges faced by putting the F-111--with all of its new systems--into service are now accepted as a normal outfit in modern fighter aircraft. The F-111 had a lot of bad publicity, but in the end the F-111 did its job extremely well. Although the Navy did not accept the F-111B model, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat became a success, resulting in large part from the F-111B experience and tests it did accomplish with the radar and missile systems.

Book General Dynamics F 111 Aardvark

Download or read book General Dynamics F 111 Aardvark written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-20 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its uncertain start the F-111 proved to be one of the most successful and influential designs of the 1960s. Its radical 'swing wing' was adopted by the F-14 Tomcat, Panavia Tornado and Rockwell B-1B Lancer while its turbofan-type engines became standard in many combat aircraft. F-111 crews pioneered tactics using terrain-following and laser targeting devices that made the F-15E Eagle's missions possible. Its 4,000 low-altitude penetration missions during Operation Linebacker in Vietnam showed how individual aircraft can deliver crippling blows to enemy capability without loss to themselves. The recent retirement of the F-111 from Australian service appears to have created a surge of interest in the type, which hasn't been featured in previous Osprey works.

Book A 3 Skywarrior Units of the Vietnam War

Download or read book A 3 Skywarrior Units of the Vietnam War written by Rick Morgan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior, though something of a cult favourite, remains a largely unremarked classic of Naval Aviation. Built for nuclear weapon delivery, the A-3 made its name in Vietnam as a conventional bomber, tanker and Electronic Warfare platform. It was the largest aircraft ever regularly operated from the decks of aircraft carriers, earning it the fleet-wide nickname 'Whale'. It excelled in every mission area assigned to it and operated in the US Navy for more than four decades, from 1956 through to 1991. Fully illustrated to depict the incredible array of paint schemes and its awesome size, this volume focuses on the type's Vietnam service, which saw the aircraft briefly used as a bomber over both North and South Vietnam from March 1965, before the Skywarrior proved far more valuable as a multi-role tanker (KA-3B) and tanker/tactical jammer (EKA-3B). The title includes details on all of these operations as well as more clandestine reconnaissance missions, and provides information about the men that flew them.

Book F 105 Thunderchief MiG Killers of the Vietnam War

Download or read book F 105 Thunderchief MiG Killers of the Vietnam War written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its 'F-for-fighter' designation, the F-105 was designed and purchased to give the USAF an aircraft capable of the delivery of nuclear weapons at very high speed, long range and below-the-radar altitudes. However, when the Vietnam War began it also emerged as USAF's best available tactical bomber for a 'limited conventional' war as well. Extensively targeted by MiG-17s and MiG-21s the F-105 pilots developed innovative tactics that allowed them to compete in air-to-air duels with their smaller, more manoeuvrable enemies. Illustrated throughout with extensive photographs detailing weapon loads, internal features and action shots of actual engagements, this volume examines the conduct of the Rolling Thunder strike missions and the tactics used for attack and defence by the attack, escort fighter and radar monitoring elements within strike formations.

Book Sierra Hotel flying Air Force fighters in the decade after Vietnam

Download or read book Sierra Hotel flying Air Force fighters in the decade after Vietnam written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1999, only a few weeks before the U.S. Air Force spearheaded NATO's Allied Force air campaign against Serbia, Col. C.R. Anderegg, USAF (Ret.), visited the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. Colonel Anderegg had known Gen. John Jumper since they had served together as jet forward air controllers in Southeast Asia nearly thirty years earlier. From the vantage point of 1999, they looked back to the day in February 1970, when they first controlled a laser-guided bomb strike. In this book Anderegg takes us from "glimmers of hope" like that one through other major improvements in the Air Force that came between the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. Always central in Anderegg's account of those changes are the people who made them. This is a very personal book by an officer who participated in the transformation he describes so vividly. Much of his story revolves around the Fighter Weapons School at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, where he served two tours as an instructor pilot specializing in guided munitions.

Book Mountain Home Air Force Base

Download or read book Mountain Home Air Force Base written by Yancy D. Mailes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain Home Air Force Base began inauspiciously as a small effort to support and train B-24 combat aircrews for the rigors of World War II. Today it represents the only active-duty air force installation in the heart of Idaho. From its shadowy rebirth in the late 1940s to its buildup under Strategic Air Command, the base housed some of the cold war's most important assets in the battle against communism. Mountain Home's most recent and longest-serving tenant is the world-famous 366th Fighter Wing "Gunfighters." Under the stewardship of the Gunfighters, Mountain Home has been transformed from a remote, dusty World War II airstrip to one of the air force's premier training facilities, readying aircrews and their support agencies for the demands of modern warfare.
