Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lavish volume on the stunning interiors and houses of this award-winning design and architecture firm, best known for its exceptional craftsmanship and refined sophistication drawn from the founders' Mexican heritage. Ezequiel Farca and Cristina Grappin challenge stereotypes and think globally, designing luxury vacation homes in Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and Cancun, Mexico, and more recently Southern California and Europe. Their studio focuses on creating holistic spaces, which are a perfect blend of timeless design and comfortable functionality, using natural materials and elegant details. Understated luxury is a common theme of their residential interiors, with custom-designed furnishings and artisanal pieces sourced from around the world and an emphasis on serenity, simple forms, and a soft, warm palette. Featured are more than sixteen residential and commercial projects, presented up close and with plans, including a mezcal bar located in a landmark building in Oaxaca; a Venice Beach town house designed for the owners' private art collection; and interiors and design of a Benetti Crystal luxury yacht. An interview with Michael Webb reveals the architects' thought processes and influences

Book excerpt: In Anti-Capitalism, activist and scholar Ezequiel Adamovsky tells the story of the long-standing effort to build a better world, one without an abusive system at its heart. Backed up by arresting, lucid images from the radical artist group United Illustrators, Adamovsky details the struggle against rising corporate power, as that struggle unfolds in the halls of academia, in the pages of radical newspapers, and in the jungles and the streets. From Marx through the Battle of Seattle and beyond, Adamovsky traces the beliefs and politics of the major figures in the anticapitalist tradition and explores modern experiments in building different ways of living, in the process providing an indispensible primer for anyone interested in finding alternatives to the so-called "best system we have"—and anyone interested in joining the fight.

Download or read book Sensorimotor Life written by Ezequiel Di Paolo and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-09 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How accurate is the picture of the human mind that has emerged from studies in neuroscience, psychology, and cognitive science? Anybody with an interest in how minds work - how we learn about the world and how we remember people and events - may feel dissatisfied with the answers contemporary science has to offer. Sensorimotor Life draws on current theoretical developments in the enactive approach to life and mind. It examines and expands the premises of the sciences of the human mind, while developing an alternative picture closer to people's daily experiences. Enactive ideas are applied and extended, providing a theoretically rich, naturalistic account of meaning and agency. The book includes a dynamical systems description of different types of sensorimotor regularities or sensorimotor contingencies; a dynamical interpretation of Piaget's theory of equilibration to ground the concept of sensorimotor mastery; and a theory of agency as organized networks of sensorimotor schemes, as well as its implicatons for embodied subjectivity. Written for students and researchers of cognitive science, the authors offer a fuller view of the mind, a view better attuned to the experiences of people who live, work, love, struggle, and age, thrown into a world of meaningful relations they help create. Additionally, the book is of interest to neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and philosophers of science.

Book The Princes of Naranja

Download or read book The Princes of Naranja written by Paul Friedrich and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking study, Paul Friedrich looks closely at the strong men of the Tarascan Indian village of Naranja: their leadership, friendship, kinship, and violent local politics (over a time depth of one generation), and ways to understand such phenomena. What emerges is an acutely observed portrait of the men who form the very basis of the grass-roots power structure in Mexico today. Of interest to historians, sociologists, and political scientists, as well as Latin Americanists and anthropologists, The Princes of Naranja is a sequel to Friedrich's now classic Agrarian Revolt in a Mexican Village. It begins with biographical character studies of seven leaders—peasant gunmen, judges, politicos; here the book will grip the reader and provoke strong emotional response, from laughter to horror. A middle section places these "princes" in relation to each other, and to the contexts of village society and the larger entities of which it forms a part. Friedrich's synthesis of anthropology, local (mainly oral) history, macrohistory, microsociology, psychology, and literature gives new insight into the structure of Mexican politics from the local level up, and provides a model for other scholars doing analogous work in other parts of the world, especially in the developing world. The concluding section raises vital questions about the dynamic relations between the fieldworker, fieldwork, field notes, the villagers, the writing of a fieldwork-based book, and, implicitly, the audience for such books.

Book Spanish Women Writers and Spain s Civil War

Download or read book Spanish Women Writers and Spain s Civil War written by Maryellen Bieder and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) pitted conservative forces including the army, the Church, the Falange (fascist party), landowners, and industrial capitalists against the Republic, installed in 1931 and supported by intellectuals, the petite bourgeoisie, many campesinos (farm laborers), and the urban proletariat. Provoking heated passions on both sides, the Civil War soon became an international phenomenon that inspired a number of literary works reflecting the impact of the war on foreign and national writers. While the literature of the period has been the subject of scholarship, women's literary production has not been studied as a body of work in the same way that literature by men has been, and its unique features have not been examined. Addressing this lacuna in literary studies, this volume provides fresh perspectives on well-known women writers, as well as less studied ones, whose works take the Spanish Civil War as a theme. The authors represented in this collection reflect a wide range of political positions. Writers such as Maria Zambrano, Mercè Rodoreda, and Josefina Aldecoa were clearly aligned with the Republic, whereas others, including Mercedes Salisachs and Liberata Masoliver, sympathized with the Nationalists. Most, however, are situated in a more ambiguous political space, although the ethics and character portraits that emerge in their works might suggest Republican sympathies. Taken together, the essays are an important contribution to scholarship on literature inspired by this pivotal point in Spanish history.
