Erich Stahl was a professional journalist assigned to cover some of the most famous of these units--the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler," the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking," and the Dutch and Ukrainian volunteers serving with the SS--but with a twist: he actually pulled duty as a soldier in the front lines, where he experienced all the hardships, privations, and gut-wrenching emotions of the men who fought the Soviets.

Book Ernie Pyles War

Download or read book Ernie Pyles War written by James Tobin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1999-01-15 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a machine-gun bullet ended the life of war correspondent Ernie Pyle in the final days of World War II, Americans mourned him in the same breath as they mourned Franklin Roosevelt. To millions, the loss of this American folk hero seemed nearly as great as the loss of the wartime president. If the hidden horrors and valor of combat persist at all in the public mind, it is because of those writers who watched it and recorded it in the faith that war is too important to be confined to the private memories of the warriors. Above all these writers, Ernie Pyle towered as a giant. Through his words and his compassion, Americans everywhere gleaned their understanding of what they came to call “The Good War.” Pyle walked a troubled path to fame. Though insecure and anxious, he created a carefree and kindly public image in his popular prewar column—all the while struggling with inner demons and a tortured marriage. War, in fact, offered Pyle an escape hatch from his own personal hell. It also offered him a subject precisely suited to his talent—a shrewd understanding of human nature, an unmatched eye for detail, a profound capacity to identify with the suffering soldiers whom he adopted as his own, and a plain yet poetic style reminiscent of Mark Twain and Will Rogers. These he brought to bear on the Battle of Britain and all the great American campaigns of the war—North Africa, Sicily, Italy, D-Day and Normandy, the liberation of Paris, and finally Okinawa, where he felt compelled to go because of his enormous public stature despite premonitions of death. In this immensely engrossing biography, affectionate yet critical, journalist and historian James Tobin does an Ernie Pyle job on Ernie Pyle, evoking perfectly the life and labors of this strange, frail, bald little man whose love/hate relationship to war mirrors our own. Based on dozens of interviews and copious research in little-known archives, Ernie Pyle's War is a self-effacing tour de force. To read it is to know Ernie Pyle, and most of all, to know his war.

Download or read book Some Survived written by Manny Lawton and published by Algonquin Books. This book was released on 2004-01-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manny Lawton was a twenty-three-year-old Army captain on April 8, 1942, when orders came to surrender to the Japanese forces invading the Philippine Islands. The next day, he and his fellow American and Filipino prisoners set out on the infamous Bataan Death March--a forced six-day, sixty-mile trek under a broiling tropical sun during which approximately eleven thousand men died or were bayoneted, clubbed, or shot to death by the Japanese. Yet terrible as the Death March was, for Manny Lawton and his comrades it was only the beginning. When the war ended in August 1945, it is estimated that some 57 percent of the American troops who had surrendered on Bataan had perished. But this is not a chronicle of despair. It is, instead, the story of how men can suffer even the most desperate conditions and, in their will to retain their humanity, triumph over appalling adversity. An epic of quiet heroism, Some Survived is a harrowing, poignant, and inspiring tale that lifts the heart.

Book Heaven and Hell Eyewitness

Download or read book Heaven and Hell Eyewitness written by Steven C Pike and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there pets in Heaven? Do sinners make it past the pearly gates? Does hell exist? Are YOU worthy? Read this and find out. In 2019 I was placed in a medically induced coma for 2 days. During that time, I was given a glimpse of heaven and hell. I was told to take note of all I saw and heard. Then I was told to come back and tell people about what I witnessed. I will be the first to admit that I am not a writer. In fact, I don't even like reading books. But when the Lord Almighty tells you to tell your story, you do it. I am no great biblical scholar. I don't claim to know the bible inside and out. Like most Christians, I know the important stuff. I have never read the book of Revelation. I heard snippets of it in church over the years like the rest of us. But when I was in heaven, I was given great detail about things that I wouldn't normally know. I'm not into reading or math so knowing detailed numbers and measurements about what I saw still amazes me. Many will think that what saw was because of the medications or a hallucination. But I saw people I didn't know and came back and described them to people who then showed me photos of the person I was describing. I had messages for people that made no sense to me but made sense to the person whom I delivered the message to. How could I describe people and things I knew nothing about? My book isn't a thick novel like other books. Many have told me that they were able to read my book in one day. I'm not a professional writer. I write like I talk. So please forgive me if my book isn't as fancy as some other books out there. I was told to tell my what I witnessed and that is what I did. I hope you enjoy my experience.

Book Hell Before Their Very Eyes

Download or read book Hell Before Their Very Eyes written by John C. McManus and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life-altering experiences of the American soldiers who liberated three Nazi concentration camps. On April 4, 1945, United States Army units from the 89th Infantry Division and the 4th Armored Division seized Ohrdruf, the first of many Nazi concentration camps to be liberated in Germany. In the weeks that followed, as more camps were discovered, thousands of soldiers came face to face with the monstrous reality of Hitler’s Germany. These men discovered the very depths of human-imposed cruelty and depravity: railroad cars stacked with emaciated, lifeless bodies; ovens full of incinerated human remains; warehouses filled with stolen shoes, clothes, luggage, and even eyeglasses; prison yards littered with implements of torture and dead bodies; and—perhaps most disturbing of all—the half-dead survivors of the camps. For the American soldiers of all ranks who witnessed such powerful evidence of Nazi crimes, the experience was life altering. Almost all were haunted for the rest of their lives by what they had seen, horrified that humans from ostensibly civilized societies were capable of such crimes. Military historian John C. McManus sheds new light on this often-overlooked aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on a rich blend of archival sources and thousands of firsthand accounts—including unit journals, interviews, oral histories, memoirs, diaries, letters, and published recollections—Hell Before Their Very Eyes focuses on the experiences of the soldiers who liberated Ohrdruf, Buchenwald, and Dachau and their determination to bear witness to this horrific history.

Book Eyewitness to Wehrmacht Atrocities on the Eastern Front

Download or read book Eyewitness to Wehrmacht Atrocities on the Eastern Front written by Luis Raffeiner and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-12-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A German soldier deployed to Russia recounts his harrowing experience as both victim and perpetrator of Nazi atrocities in this WWII memoir. Serving his country on the Eastern Front, Luis Raffeiner witnessed devastating acts committed by the German army that couldn’t be reconciled with the heroic propaganda back home. Caught up in the turmoil of the vast conflict, he struggled to make sense of the ruthlessness he witnessed—and the part he himself played in it. In this bracingly candid memoir, Raffeiner offers a detailed firsthand account of the Nazi war of annihilation in the Soviet Union. Raffeiner chronicles his family life in a remote village in the Tyrol in the 1930s, his military service in Italy, his transfer to the Wehrmacht and his training as a mechanic on assault guns. He then proceeds to his march into the Soviet Union in 1941. There he experienced, as he says, ‘war in its brutal and cruel reality’. Captured by the Red Army, Raffeiner barely survived as a prisoner of war. His dramatic and honest recollections shatter the myth of the clean conduct of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front. He testifies to vicious actions, including some in which he himself was involved. His memoir is not a heroic tale – it shows how a man from an ordinary background can come to participate in the horrors of war.

Book A Paradise Built in Hell

Download or read book A Paradise Built in Hell written by Rebecca Solnit and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-08-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Men Explain Things to Me explores the moments of altruism and generosity that arise in the aftermath of disaster Why is it that in the aftermath of a disaster? whether manmade or natural?people suddenly become altruistic, resourceful, and brave? What makes the newfound communities and purpose many find in the ruins and crises after disaster so joyous? And what does this joy reveal about ordinarily unmet social desires and possibilities? In A Paradise Built in Hell, award-winning author Rebecca Solnit explores these phenomena, looking at major calamities from the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco through the 1917 explosion that tore up Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. She examines how disaster throws people into a temporary utopia of changed states of mind and social possibilities, as well as looking at the cost of the widespread myths and rarer real cases of social deterioration during crisis. This is a timely and important book from an acclaimed author whose work consistently locates unseen patterns and meanings in broad cultural histories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling WWI history reveals the harsh realities of the British Army’s Middle East campaign through the firsthand accounts of soldiers. The massive flow of British troops and equipment to Egypt made that country host to the largest British military base outside of Britain and France. Though many soldiers found the atmosphere in Cairo exotic, the desert countryside made operations extremely difficult. The intense heat frequently sickened soldiers, and unruly camels were the only practical means of transport across the soft sands of the Sinai. The constant shortage of potable water was a persistent problem for the troops. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and memoirs of British soldiers who fought in Egypt and Palestine, David R. Woodward paints a vivid picture of the mayhem, terror, boredom, filth, and sacrifice they endured. The voices of these soldiers offer a forgotten perspective of the Great War, describing not only the physical and psychological toll of combat but the daily struggles of soldiers who were stationed in an unfamiliar environment that often proved just as antagonistic as the enemy.
