Book excerpt: Eros, the mafia prince of the most feared mafia in the world, was the stuff of nightmares for anyone who dared to cross him. Blessed with ethereal good looks and a physique sculpted by years of ruthless training, this seventeen-year-old was the embodiment of temptation and terror. With mesmerizing electric blue eyes and a jawline sharp enough to cut glass, Eros commanded attention wherever he went, leaving a trail of besotted admirers in his wake. Everyone fears the stunning killer who is on the brink of ascending to the throne of the underworld, his reputation more fearsome than even that of his father. The king and prince don't see eye to eye. The reason is unknown. But even the king knows not to provoke his wounded lion-like prince because he won't blink an eye before killing him Yet, amidst the fear and awe he inspired, there was one person who saw past Eros' ruthless exterior. Aria Miller, a high school student, had fallen hopelessly in love with the mafia prince, captivated by the depth of his soul and the vulnerability that lay beneath his icy demeanor. Loving him from afar was her only option, for Eros was as untouchable as he was irresistible. Besides his close-knit circle of friends, Eros remained aloof and indifferent, ignoring the advances of those who sought his attention, like a plague. But Aria, with her quiet strength and unwavering compassion, had managed to glimpse the man beneath the monster…

Book The Power of Divine Eros

Download or read book The Power of Divine Eros written by A. H. Almaas and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two innovative spiritual teachers show how to use desire and passion—eros—as a gateway to realizing our fullest potential What do desire and passion have to do with our spiritual journey? According to A. H. Almaas and Karen Johnson, they are an essential part of it. Conventional wisdom cautions that desire and passion are opposed to the spiritual path—that engaging in desire will take you more into the world, into egoic life. And for most people, that is exactly what happens. We naturally tend to experience wanting in a self-centered way. The Power of Divine Eros challenges the view that the divine and the erotic are separate. When we open to the energy, aliveness, spontaneity, and zest of erotic love, we will find it inseparable from the realm of the holy and sacred. When this is understood, desire and passion become a gateway to wholeness and to realizing our full potential. Through guided exercises, the authors reveal how our relationships become opportunities on the spiritual journey to express ourselves authentically, to relate with openness, and to discover dynamic inner realms with another person. Through embodying the energy of eros, each of us can learn to be fully real and alive in all of our interactions.

Book Eros in Neoplatonism and its Reception in Christian Philosophy

Download or read book Eros in Neoplatonism and its Reception in Christian Philosophy written by Dimitrios A. Vasilakis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showing the ontological importance of eros within the philosophical systems inspired by Plato, Dimitrios A. Vasilakis examines the notion of eros in key texts of the Neoplatonic philosophers, Plotinus, Proclus, and the Church Father, Dionysius the Areopagite. Outlining the divergences and convergences between the three brings forward the core idea of love as deficiency in Plotinus and charts how this is transformed into plenitude in Proclus and Dionysius. Does Proclus diverge from Plotinus in his hierarchical scheme of eros? Is the Dionysian hierarchy to be identified with Proclus' classification of love? By analysing The Enneads, III.5, the Commentary on the First Alcibiades and the Divine Names side by side, Vasilakis uses a wealth of modern scholarship, including contemporary Greek literature to explore these questions, tracing a clear historical line between the three seminal late antique thinkers.

Book The Poetics of Eros in Ancient Greece

Download or read book The Poetics of Eros in Ancient Greece written by Claude Calame and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poetics of Eros in Ancient Greece offers the first comprehensive inquiry into the deity of sexual love, a power that permeated daily Greek life. Avoiding Foucault's philosophical paradigm of dominance/submission, Claude Calame uses an anthropological and linguistic approach to re-create indigenous categories of erotic love. He maintains that Eros, the joyful companion of Aphrodite, was a divine figure around which poets constructed a physiology of desire that functioned in specific ways within a network of social relations. Calame begins by showing how poetry and iconography gave a rich variety of expression to the concept of Eros, then delivers a history of the deity's roles within social and political institutions, and concludes with a discussion of an Eros-centered metaphysics. Calame's treatment of archaic and classical Greek institutions reveals Eros at work in initiation rites and celebrations, educational practices, the Dionysiac theater of tragedy and comedy, and in real and imagined spatial settings. For men, Eros functioned particularly in the symposium and the gymnasium, places where men and boys interacted and where future citizens were educated. The household was the setting where girls, brides, and adult wives learned their erotic roles--as such it provides the context for understanding female rites of passage and the problematics of sexuality in conjugal relations. Through analyses of both Greek language and practices, Calame offers a fresh, subtle reading of relations between individuals as well as a quick-paced and fascinating overview of Eros in Greek society at large.
