Mindful of Swift's dictum, this compilation is offered as an exhaustive coverage of a smallish literature on the synthesis and secretion of beeswax, its elaboration into combs and the factors which bear on the execution of these processes by honeybees. To codify any aspect of the biology of an animal of agricultural importance is to sift through myriad observations and experiments, centuries old, that come down to us enshrouded in the folk literature. It is evident that wars and languages have also acted as barriers to the dissemination of knowledge about honeybees. Thus, particular care has been given to the primacy of discovery and its con textual significance. I have endeavoured to not over-interpret data and to allow the authors' works to speak for themselves. I have also tried to indicate some of the more obvious gaps in our knowledge of honeybees in relation to wax and to suggest some directions as to where we might proceed, aided by discoveries made on other animals and plants. This was done to remind the seasoned bee-hand of our general neglect of beeswax biology, historically constituting less than a percentage point of the apicultural literature.

Book excerpt: "Beeswax harvesting emerged in the northern Maya lowlands (or Yucatán Peninsula) during the mid-sixteenth century, in the wake of Spanish conquest and colonization. Lowland Mayas had long-since been collecting honey from local species of stingless honeybee—especially the domestically-kept Melipona beecheii—but their wax had few uses in the region. For Spaniards in the newly founded province of Yucatán, however, the northern lowlands’ seemingly abundant sources of domestic and wild beeswax presented a significant commercial opportunity, and by mid-century it had become a core component of the region’s economy and the province’s second most important export (after cotton textiles). This dissertation explores the beeswax industry’s origins and structure, as well as its economic, political, and ecological dimensions. It examines how Maya societies interacted—or articulated—with a rapidly changing and globalizing Mesoamerican economy, and how beeswax featured in Mayas’ responses to the challenges and opportunities posed by Spanish presence on the peninsula. It argues that the wax industry was a geographically heterogeneous phenomenon, taking place mostly in the Yucatán Peninsula’s wetter, more heavily forested southern and eastern reaches, far from the centers of Spanish power in the northwest. There, Mayas extracted huge amounts of wax from wild populations of stingless honeybees, not only to satisfy Spanish demand but also to gain economic autonomy, political leverage, and freedom from Spanish rule. While the primary Spanish extractive institutions used to obtain wax from Maya communities were broadly characterized by varying degrees of coercion and exploitation, these apparatuses stood only at the very end of a complex commodity chain dominated by Mayas and stretching far beyond the province into unconquered regions to the south and east. In more environmental terms, beeswax extraction in the northern lowlands was carried out by indigenous people interacting with New World bee species in Maya landscapes. It is therefore an example of how human-environmental interactions in the colonial Americas could shift dramatically—to the point of causing local or regional scarcities in some species—without direct intervention by Europeans or the species they introduced. Such shifts illustrate how economic articulations between indigenous and European societies could have significant ecological implications, even in areas where Europeans seldom set foot and where indigenous peoples retained a high degree of autonomy from European intervention"--
