Themost important conditions were the type of top slag, solid to gasloading and oxygen activity. Four slag initial conditions werestudied: no slag, a dry top slag, a liquid slag, and the dry slagmodified by pre-plunging of aluminum. The calcium carbideutilization, fraction fo sulphur removed and reaction rateincreased in the above order. It was found that lower solid togas loadings were beneficial to utilization, sulphur removal andreaction rate. Oxygen activity measurements showed thataluminum additions were associated with low oxygen activity andexcellent desulphurization results. It is also shown that oxygenwas detrimental to the plume reactions and to the top slagreactions.
