Download or read book How to Be Inappropriate written by Daniel Nester and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dry, offbeat, and mostly profane, this debut collection of humorous nonfiction glorifies all things inappropriate and TMI. A compendia of probing essays, lists, profiles, barstool rants, queries, pedantic footnotes, play scripts, commonplace miscellany, and overly revealing memoir, How to Be Inappropriate adds up to the portrait of an artist who bumbles through life obsessed with one thing: extreme impropriety. In How to Be Inappropriate, Daniel Nester determines the boundary of acceptable behavior by completely disregarding it. As a twenty-something hipster, he looks for love with a Williamsburg abstract painter who has had her feet licked for money. As a teacher, he tries out curse words with Chinese students in ESL classes. Along the way, Nester provides a short cultural history on mooning and attempts to cast a spell on a neighbor who fails to curb his dog. He befriends exiled video game king Todd Rogers, re-imagines a conversation with NPR’s Terry Gross, and invents a robot version of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons. No matter which misadventure catches their eye in this eclectic series of essays, How to Be Inappropriate makes readers appreciate that someone else has experienced these embarrassing sides of life, so that they won’t have to.
Download or read book Pause to Think written by Jaime Lester and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our brains are wonderful tools, but they are nonetheless prone to misjudging information and making suboptimal decisions. In many situations, we act without fully considering why we are behaving in a certain way. We like to feel good about ourselves; we interpret the world using stories instead of statistics; and we make instinctive judgments and then stick to them. How can we think more clearly and make better decisions—in business and in life? This book is a practical and accessible introduction to mental models, teaching readers how to harness their power to think more clearly, make better decisions, and learn more effectively. The essential step in applying these concepts and frameworks, Jaime Lester shows, is to pause. Take a moment to reflect on the options, decide on the optimal approach before launching into action, and reexamine the process regularly. Drawing on a variety of academic disciplines as well as cognitive and behavioral research, Lester offers step-by-step templates to improve readers’ critical thinking and decision making. He guides readers through honing their reasoning in areas including finance, economics, statistics, and daily life and draws broader lessons for cultivating a prudent investment approach as well as personal well-being and happiness. Written in a conversational and witty style and featuring memorable examples and illustrations, Pause to Think shares essential lessons and tools for all readers interested in the power of mental models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dry, offbeat, and mostly profane, How to Be Inappropriate glorifies all things TMI. Arguments, lists, barstool rants, queries, pedantic footnotes, play scripts, commonplace miscellany, profiles, and overly revealing memoir-ettes, How to Be Inappropriate adds up to the portrait of a 20-something-become-30-something, bachelor-become-husband, boy-man-about-town who bumbles through life obsessed with one thing; extreme impropriety. In How to Be Inappropriate, Daniel Nester determines the boundary of acceptable behavior - mostly by disregarding it. As a here-to-cut-a-hipster-swathe-through-the-city man he looks for love with a Williamsburg abstract painter who has had her feet licked for money. As a teacher, he tries out curse words with Chinese students in ESL classes. Along the way, Nester provides a short cultural history on mooning and attempts to cast a spell on a neighbor who fails to curb his dog. He fields middle fingers from bratty NYU film students, explores the world of Christian parody bands, befriends exiled video game king Todd Rogers, re-imagines a conversation with NPR's Terry Gross, and invents a robot version of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons. For Daniel Nester, also known as Captain Embarrassment, to be inappropriate is a matter of worldview, a code of behavior. Every moment skews to the profane, inappropriate, and just plain wrong. No matter which misadventure catches your eye, How to Be Inappropriate will make you appreciate that someone else has experienced these embarrassing sides of life, so you won't have to.

Download or read book Genetics and Genomics of Brachypodium written by John P. Vogel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasses dominate many natural ecosystems and produce the bulk calories consumed by humans either directly in the form of grains or indirectly through forage/grain fed animals. In addition, grasses grown as biomass crops are poised to become a significant source of renewable energy. Despite their economic and environmental importance, research into the unique aspects of grass biology has been hampered by the lack of a truly tractable experimental model system. Over that past decade, the small, annual grass Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as a viable model system for the grasses. This book describes the development of extensive experimental resources (e.g. whole genome sequence, efficient transformation methods, insertional mutant collections, large germplasm collections, recombinant inbred lines, resequenced genomes) that have led many laboratories around the world to adopt B. distachyon as a model system. The use of B. distachyon to address a wide range of biological topics (e.g. disease resistance, cell wall composition, abiotic stress tolerance, root growth and development, floral development, natural diversity) is also discussed.

Download or read book Penile Disorders written by Hartmut Porst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a compilation of papers based on pres entations made at the International Symposium on Penile Disorders held in Hamburg, Germany, 26-27 January 1996, under the Chairmanship of Hartmut Porst. This was a unique conference in that it comprehensively addressed various disorders that affect the organ situated at the "center of the male", the penis. As an important beginning, the sociocultural aspects of the erect phallus were presented by G. Wagner from Copen hagen. The anatomy of the penis and the physiological con ditions of erection were then discussed by K. -P. J Unemann from Mannheim, Germany. Previous conferences on the penis had concentrated only on specific areas of disease such as impotence. However, it became readily apparent that at this conference something new for almost every as pect of disease would be discussed, including congenital disorders such as hypospadias and epispadias, sexually transmitted and noninfectious dermatological diseases, and congenital and acquired penile curvatures and penile fractures. An excellent presentation of managing penile cancer by stage related therapeutic decision was presented by S. C. MUller from Bonn, Germany. There is no better per son to present a discussion of Peyronie' s disease in 1996 from a historical and management perspective than J. Pryor from London, UK. This same degree of expertise was also demonstrated by I. Saenz de Tejada from Madrid, Spain, re garding priapism.

Download or read book Sick to Debt written by Peter A. Ubel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informed argument for reworking the broken market†‘based U.S. healthcare system by making cost and quality more transparent The United States has the most expensive healthcare system in the world. While policy makers have argued over who is at fault for this, the system has been quietly moving toward high†‘deductible insurance plans that require patients to pay large amounts out of pocket before insurance kicks in. The idea behind this shift is that patients will become better consumers of healthcare when forced to pay for their medical expenses. Laying bare the perils of the current situation, Peter A. Ubel—a physician and behavioral scientist—notes that even when patients have time to shop around, healthcare costs remain largely opaque, difficult to access, and hard to compare. Arguing for a middle path between a market†‘based and a completely free system, Ubel envisions more transparent, smarter healthcare plans that tie the prices of treatments to the value they provide so that people can afford to receive the care they deserve.
Download or read book Pelvic Floor Exercises for Erectile Dysfunction written by Grace Dorey and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2003-11-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text reaches beyond the boundaries of mainstream physiotherapy into a novel area for physiotherapists and nurses. It provides information on the prevalence and risk factors for erectile dysfunction, the anatomy and physiology of normal erectile function and the role played by the pelvic floor muscles in men. A successful randomised controlled trial exploring pelvic floor muscle exercises and manometric biofeedback for both erectile dysfunction and post-micturition dribble is clearly reported. This is the first time that erectile dysfunction has been associated with post-micturition dribble due to poor pelvic floor musculature. The discussion covering each aspect of the trial adds knowledge to a poorly researched subject. This book provides professionals with first-line treatment guidance based on evidence for the well-being of men with erectile dysfunction and their partners. It should be of interest to all professionals working in the area of urology.
