Ce livre est destiné aux utilisateurs confrontés à des tableaux multiples. Une large place est accordée aux applications et à la mise en oeuvre via R. L’objectif est de rendre l’utilisateur autonome dans l’application de l’AFM sur ses données. Dans cet esprit, ce livre : – introduit une à une les principales caractéristiques de la méthode intuitivement à partir d’exemples ; – donne les éléments théoriques nécessaires pour une compréhension en profondeur avec un recours au raisonnement géométrique systématique ; – illustre les résultats à partir des exemples introductifs ; – détaille la marche à suivre pour appliquer l’AFM avec le package FactoMineR ou via des codes R. Ces codes sont disponibles sur le site du LMA 2 (Agrocampus). Cet exposé est complété par une présentation des méthodes classiques, ACP et ACM , elle aussi fondée sur des exemples. L’ensemble constitue l’état de l’art aujourd’hui en analyse factorielle. Jérôme Pagès est professeur de statistique à Agrocampus (Rennes) où il dirige le laboratoire de mathématiques appliquées (LMA2).

Symbolic data methods differ from that of data mining, for example, because rather than identifying points of interest in the data, symbolic data methods allow the user to build models of the data and make predictions about future events. This book is the result of the work f a pan-European project team led by Edwin Diday following 3 years work sponsored by EUROSTAT. It includes a full explanation of the new SODAS software developed as a result of this project. The software and methods described highlight the crossover between statistics and computer science, with a particular emphasis on data mining.

Un formalisme est d'abord proposé dans le but de décrire et de manipuler un tableau de données exprimant un niveau de connaissances plus élevé que de simples observations. On parle alors de données complexes. En effet, afin de tenir compte de l'imprécision, de l'incertitude ou de la variation souvent rencontrées dans les données, un individu pourra être décrit sur chaque variable non seulement par une valeur unique mais aussi par un ensemble de valeurs ou par une distribution sur les valeurs. A partir de ce formalisme a) on propose une méthodologie générale permettant de définir un indice de proximité entre deux vecteurs de descriptions complexes et b) les objets symboliques sont présentés en lien avec la théorie des ensembles flous. Dans ce cadre, nous proposons une méthode divisive de classification hiérarchique. Elle est définie pour tous types de variables (quantitatives, qualitatives), possédant éventuellement une description complexe. A chaque étape on optimise un critère mathématique qui est une extension du critère d'inertie intra-classe au cas de données complexes. L'aspect nomothétique de cette méthode permet de réduire fortement l'aspect combinatoire caractérisant les méthodes divisives. De plus, les classes de la hiérarchie sont munies d'une description simple (une conjonction de propriétés portant sur les variables de l'analyse) facilement interprétable par l'utilisateur. Ces descriptions donnent aussi des règles d'affectation d'un nouvel individu aux classes ainsi construites.
