Book Death by Meeting

Download or read book Death by Meeting written by Patrick M. Lencioni and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A straightforward framework for creating engaging and exciting business meetings Casey McDaniel had never been so nervous in his life. In just ten minutes, The Meeting, as it would forever be known, would begin. Casey had every reason to believe that his performance over the next two hours would determine the fate of his career, his financial future, and the company he had built from scratch. “How could my life have unraveled so quickly?” he wondered. In his latest page-turning work of business fiction, best-selling author Patrick Lencioni provides readers with another powerful and thought-provoking book, this one centered around a cure for the most painful yet underestimated problem of modern business: bad meetings. And what he suggests is both simple and revolutionary. Casey McDaniel, the founder and CEO of Yip Software, is in the midst of a problem he created, but one he doesn’t know how to solve. And he doesn’t know where or who to turn to for advice. His staff can’t help him; they’re as dumbfounded as he is by their tortuous meetings. Then an unlikely advisor, Will Peterson, enters Casey’s world. When he proposes an unconventional, even radical, approach to solving the meeting problem, Casey is just desperate enough to listen. As in his other books, Lencioni provides a framework for his groundbreaking model, and makes it applicable to the real world. Death by Meeting is nothing short of a blueprint for leaders who want to eliminate waste and frustration among their teams and create environments of engagement and passion.

Book Conference Proceedings Emotions in Language Learning and Use

Download or read book Conference Proceedings Emotions in Language Learning and Use written by Cornelia Herbert and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotions are powerful, so is language. Emotions guide perception, attention, memory and decisions making. They challenge or promote health and well-being. Evolutionary, emo-tions have a physical origin and in line with this, a significant pro-portion of emotional signals are communicated non-verbally (e.g., by the face, gestures or voice). Nevertheless, in humans specifically language is taking over a pivotal role in conveying emotions by mentally representing emotions and feelings in terms of abstract concepts, the latter being theoretically assumed to be grounded in perception, action and bodily experiences. Scientifically, an “emotion-without-language” or a “language-without-emotion” perspective has been questioned recently by significant empirical evidence in support of a mutual dependence of emotions and language. However, core questions regarding this functional interdepend-ence remain. Open questions pertain to the role of emotions in language learning and its use, which is the key topic of this year’s ERL conference 2023 at Ulm University. This year, the ERL conference is aimed at crossing borders between disciplines, research methods and interests in the field of basic and applied emotion and language research in an attempt to foster understanding of emotion and language and their interaction by providing answers to the questions outlined above. The conference proceedings that contain all individual contributions to the ERL VI conference including the talks of our keynote speakers contribute to this joint interdisciplinary endeavor.

Book Towards a New Paradigm for English Language Teaching

Download or read book Towards a New Paradigm for English Language Teaching written by Hajime Terauchi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a new paradigm for English language teaching based on concepts from English for Specific Purposes (ESP) research and applications as well as from growing evidence relating pattern recognition to language learning ability. The contributors to the volume argue that learners should not try to become proficient all-around users of ‘idealistic native-like’ English, but instead should be realistic about what they need to acquire and how to go about achieving their specific goals. The book discusses the present situation by describing the status quo of English language education in Japan, taking into consideration recent trends of CLIL (content and language integrated learning), EMI (English medium instruction), and TBLT (task-based language teaching) as well as the work done on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It introduces new movements in ESP in Japan and in other Asian regions, covering topics ranging from genre analysis to corpus linguistics, and presents application examples of ESP practice in a range of educational situations in Japan from the graduate school level to elementary and middle school contexts. It also offers readers application examples of ESP practice in a range of business settings and expands the discussion to the global sphere where EAP and ESP are gaining importance as the number of ELF (English as a Lingua Franca) speakers continue to increase. The book will be of great interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students working in the fields of EFL and ESL.
