Download or read book Jesus written by Wayne Davies and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to an in-depth study of John 4, focusing on Jesus' visit to the Samaritan town of Sychar, where He encounters a woman at the well and engages her in one of the most captivating conversations you will ever read in the Bible. The end result is that both the woman and her fellow townspeople come to believe in Jesus as Savior, King and Living Water.Best-selling author Wayne Davies provides a compelling analysis of how Jesus reveals His true identity to this outcast woman in a way that changes her heart and her life from the inside out. The woman is so enthralled with Jesus that she leaves her water jar at the well and heads into town to tell the people she has just met the Christ, the long-awaited Jewish Messiah! After spending time with Jesus, many other Samaritans also come to the conclusion that this Man is indeed the Savior of the world. There is no other account in the gospels quite like this one. Only in John 4 do we see an entire group of people come to faith in such a short period of time. And it happens to the despised Samaritans! In this book, the author answers two questions critical to a proper understanding of the text: Question #1: What does this passage teach us about Jesus?Key chapters cover the meaning of the three names for Jesus found in John 4: Jesus as "Savior," Jesus as "King" (the Christ/Messiah), and Jesus as "the Living Water." Each of these titles is a wonderful manifestation of the uniqueness of the one and only Son of God. Come and learn about the incomparable glory of Jesus as revealed in the text of John's inspired account.Question #2: What is our response to this teaching?John wrote his gospel so that we would "believe" that Jesus is who He said He was. But what is biblical faith? And how do we know if we have genuine faith rather than counterfeit faith? Through use of parallel passages, the author unpacks the meaning of both saving faith and non-saving faith, so you'll be able to "examine yourself" (per 2 Corinthians 13:5) to determine whether you are a true believer."Jesus: Savior, King, Living Water" is Part 2 in a series of Bible studies on the Gospel of John. Part 1 was published in 2015 as "Jesus: Who He Is, What He Did and Why It Matters" and covered chapters 1, 2 and 3 of John's Gospel

Book Exposition of the Gospel of John

Download or read book Exposition of the Gospel of John written by Arthur W. Pink and published by . This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is our purpose to give a verse by verse exposition of the fourth Gospel in the course of this series of studies, but before turning to the opening verses of chapter I it will be necessary to consider John's Gospel as a whole, with the endeavor of discovering its scope, its central theme, and its relation to the other three Gospels. We shall not waste the reader's time by entering into a discussion as to who wrote this fourth Gospel, as to where John was when he wrote it, nor as to the probable date when it was written. These may be points of academic interest, but they provide no food for the soul, nor do they afford any help to an understanding of this section of the Bible, and these are the two chief things we desire to accomplish. Our aim is to open up the Scriptures in such a way that the reader will be able to enter into the meaning of what God has recorded for our learning in this part of His Holy Word, and to edify those who are members of the Household of Faith." Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Download or read book The Legacy of John written by Tuomas Rasimus and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates the early, second-century reception of the Fourth Gospel. This is an era when its fortunes are surrounded by silence and mystery. It was assumed, until quite recently, that Gnostic and other so-called heterodox groups were the first ones to appreciate this gospel, and hence the mainstream Christians avoided using it until Irenaeus rescued it for the church. Lately, this view has been challenged by several scholars for several reasons. The contributions in this volume, written by leading specialists in their respective fields, offer an approachable, fresh, comprehensive and up-to-date view of the second-century reception of John’s Gospel, in a situation where new understandings about various forms of early Christianity and its multiformity have started to emerge.

Book The Gospel According to John

Download or read book The Gospel According to John written by D. A. Carson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commentary seeks above all to explain the text of John's Gospel to those whose privilege and responsibility it is to minister the Word of God to others, to preach and to lead Bible studies. I have tried to include the kind of information they need to know, but to do so in such a way that the informed layperson could also use the work in personal study of the Bible, exclusively for purposes of personal growth in edification and understanding. In particular, I have attempted: (1) To make clear the flow of the text. (2) To engage a small but representative part of the massive secondary literature on John. (3) To draw a few lines towards establishing how the Fourth Gospel contributes to biblical and systematic theology. (4) To offer a consistent exposition of John's Gospel as an evangelistic Gospel. - Preface.

Book excerpt: The Gospel of John holds a special place in Christian scripture, and preaching from it can be highly influential in shaping Christian life for a number of reasons: Centrality of Jesus: John's Gospel offers a profound exploration of Jesus' identity as the Son of God, the Word made flesh (John 1:14). Preaching that unpacks these themes can deepen a believer's understanding of Jesus' divinity and significance. Focus on Faith and Life: John emphasizes the importance of faith in Jesus for eternal life (John 3:16). Sermons based on John can inspire Christians to strengthen their faith and live a life that reflects that belief. Love and Discipleship: John's Gospel is rich with Jesus' teachings on love (John 13:34-35). Preaching on these passages can motivate Christians to live with love and compassion, a core aspect of Christian life. Power and Miracles: John recounts miracles of Jesus that showcase his power and authority. Preaching on these miracles can bolster faith and inspire awe in God's work. Existential Questions: John's Gospel confronts fundamental questions about life and death (John 3:16). Sermons based on these themes can help Christians grapple with their purpose and find comfort in their faith. Overall, preaching from the Gospel of John can provide a rich foundation for Christian life. It deepens understanding of Jesus, strengthens faith, and motivates Christians to live according to their beliefs.

Book excerpt: This substantial volume includes more than fifty never-before-published expository sermons on John 4 from one of the twentieth century's greatest preachers. It was just a conversation between two people by the side of a well in Samaria. One, a local woman, came to perform her daily task of drawing water. Another, a Jewish man tired from traveling, sat down for a drink. But he wasn't just any Jewish man, and this wasn't just any conversation. The man, Jesus, revealed himself as the Messiah, leading to the conversion of not only the Samaritan woman but many from her town. Now, for the first time, fifty-six sermons by Martyn Lloyd-Jones on this passage of Scripture are available in Living Water. Lloyd-Jones, known for his ability to clearly communicate profound theological concepts, digs into this familiar passage from the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John, exposing fresh layers of truth. His perceptive analysis is helpful for all who thirst for the living water that only Jesus can provide.

Book The Gospel of John

  • Author : Frederick Dale Bruner
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 2012-02-22
  • ISBN : 1467434779
  • Pages : 1479 pages

Download or read book The Gospel of John written by Frederick Dale Bruner and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 1479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of a much-loved two volume Matthew commentary (1990) that he greatly revised and expanded fourteen years later, Frederick Dale Bruner now offers The Gospel of John: A Commentary -- more rich fruit of his lifetime of study and teaching. Rather than relying primarily on recent scholarship, Bruner honors and draws from the church's major John commentators throughout history, including Augustine, Chrysostom, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Bultmann, Barrett, and many more. Alongside this "historical interpretation" is Bruner's own contemporary interpretation, which incorporates a lucid translation of the text, references to recent scholarship, and his pastoral application of the Gospel to present-day experience. Like Bruner's other work, this commentary is rich in biblical insights, broadly historical, and deeply theological. Here is what Eugene Peterson said about Bruner's earlier work on Matthew: "This is the kind of commentary I most want -- a theological wrestling with Scripture. Frederick Dale Bruner grapples with the text not only as a technical exegete (although he does that very well) but as a church theologian, caring passionately about what these words tell us about God and ourselves. His Matthew commentary is in the grand traditions of Augustine, Calvin, and Luther -- expansive and leisurely, loving the text, the people in it, and the Christians who read it." The same could well be said about the present John commentary, which promises to be another invaluable resource for pastors, teachers, and laypeople alike.

Book Understanding the Fourth Gospel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of St. John's Gospel in forty years, this book provides new and coherent answers to what Rudolf Baltmann regarded as the two great riddles of the Gospel: its position in the history of Christian thought, and its central or governing idea. Ashton provides translations of all non-English quotations, and confines detailed exegetical arguments and intricate questions of specialized concern to the footnotes, therein making Understanding the Fourth Gospel an accessible study of the Gospel for the general reader.
