Book Export Diversification and Financing of Industrialization of Sub Sahara African Countries

Download or read book Export Diversification and Financing of Industrialization of Sub Sahara African Countries written by Antoine Niyungeko and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Economics - Foreign Trade Theory, Trade Policy, , language: English, abstract: This paper aims to examine the direct and indirect effects of foreign direct investment (FDI), development assistance (DA), and International Monetary Fund credit (IMFC) on the increase of exports (EXP) in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. The study focuses on identifying the most influential factor in driving EXP, with a particular emphasis on sustainable financing strategies for export diversification and industrialization in SSA. Traditionally, SSA has relied on FDI, development assistance (DA), remittances, and international credit for financial support. However, these sources of funding are expected to decrease due to the pandemic's economic impacts. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development forecasts a significant decline in global FDI flows, with SSA facing a 25% to 40% reduction in investment flows for 2020. This underscores the urgency for SSA nations to explore sustainable financing methods for the necessary investments to boost exports. Historically, SSA countries have utilized foreign direct investment (FDI) to fund economic development, but the outcomes have often fallen short, leaving many nations in poverty. Despite SSA's wealth of natural resources, efficient resource utilization remains a challenge, and potential advantages have not translated into inclusive growth. The region also grapples with infrastructure gaps, poor investment climates, and weak governance and institutional capacities. In this context, it is imperative to consider alternative ways to finance economic growth, particularly export diversification and industrialization. Research shows that export diversification and industrialization can significantly drive economic growth, but the question of how to finance these processes effectively remains largely unexplored. In the face of declining FDI and limitations within SSA's banking system, this study investigates the direct and indirect effects of FDI, DA, and IMFC on export expansion (EXP) and, subsequently, on gross domestic product (GDP). The study delves into the mediating role of exports in various factors' impact on GDP, with the objective of identifying the most influential factor in driving export growth. Ultimately, this study aims to provide SSA leaders and policymakers with insights into innovative and sustainable financing approaches to promote export diversification and industrialization in the region.

Book Exporting Africa

Download or read book Exporting Africa written by S. M. Wangwe and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic crisis which has hit Africa since 1985 is raising questions about Africa's future position in World Trade and whether it has any chance of developing a competitive industrial structure. Presenting studies of 55 exporting manufacturers in six African countries, this collection examines the question of why some firms in the Sub-Saharan economies have been able to develop export trade, despite generally unfavourable circumstances. In particular the papers seek to understand how these firms have been able to sustain their competitiveness in the face of rapid technological change in the international economy in the context of the threats and promises such change presents to Africa. A case is made for selective complementary investments by governments to build the technological capabilities which are necessary for attaining and maintaining competitiveness. The papers present empirical research and a framework which should be of interest to academics in the development field and to government as well as international policy makers.

Book Industrialization in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Industrialization in Sub Saharan Africa written by William F. Steel and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper analyzes industrialization experience in sub - Saharan Africa in the last three decades. Focusing on ten key countries, it draws conclusions about the impact of the initial conditions, the external environment, strategies and policies on past industrial development and identifies critical issues for future industrial policy. The analysis centers around three major themes. First, the inward-looking strategy of industrialization, as it was implemented in most African countries, generally increased dependence on imports and was not supported by policies to promote a growing surplus of domestic inputs. Second, vigorous public sector investment or take-over has been widely used to expand basic industries and reduce foreign domination, but pursuit of multiple objectives and over-extension have resulted in disappointing public sector financial performance and efficiency. The third theme concerns the incentive structure created by price, trade, investment and other policies. The paper highlights the critical issues for self-sustained, efficient industrialization. Key strategic questions are the appropriate balance between agriculture and industry and between large- and small-scale sectors, and the appropriate public sector role and intervention points.

Book Industrialization in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Industrialization in Sub Saharan Africa written by Kaleb G. Abreha and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-12-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrialization drives the sustained growth in jobs and productivity that marks the developmental take-off of most developed economies. Yet, academics and policy makers have questioned the role of manufacturing in development for late industrializers, especially ith more job creation. Industrialization drives the sustained growth in jobs and productivity that marks the developmental take-off of most developed economies. Yet, academics and policy makers have questioned the role of manufacturing in development for late industrializers, especially in view of rapid advancements in technologies and restructuring of international trade.Concurrently, industrialization and structural transformation are integral to the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the development strategies of several countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Given this renewed interest in industrialization across the region, a central question is not whether SSA countries should pursue industrialization as a potential path to sustainable growth but how to promote the prospects of industrialization. Industrialization in Sub-Saharan Africa: Seizing Opportunities in Global Value Chains addresses this question by reassessing the prospects for industrialization in SSA countries through integration into global value chains. It also examines the role of policy in enhancing these prospects. The main findings indicate that • SSA has not experienced premature deindustrialization; the region has witnessed substantial growth in manufacturing jobs despite a lack of improvement in the contribution of manufacturing value-added to GDP. • The region’s integration into manufacturing global value chains is reasonably high but it is dominated by exports of primary products and engagement in low-skill tasks. • Global value chain integration has led to job growth, and backward integration is associated with more job creation. The report emphasizes the role of policy in maintaining a competitive market environment, promoting productivity growth, and investing in skills development and enabling sectors such as infrastructure and finance. Policy makers can strengthen the global value chain linkages by (1) increasing the value-added content of current exports, (2) upgrading into high-skill tasks, and (3) creating comparative advantages in knowledge-intensive industries.

Book Trade and Industrial Development in Africa

Download or read book Trade and Industrial Development in Africa written by Moyo, Theresa and published by CODESRIA. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the perennial challenge that scholars, economists, and politicians have been grappling with since the 1960s. Development, in this book, has been defined in a context that projects it as a multidimensional and complex process which seeks to enhance the human, social, economic and cultural welfare of the people. This book calls for a rethinking of trade and industry for Africa's development. It uses data drawn from national development plans and strategies, and trade and industry issues have been prioritized at the continental level, in key policy documents. On the whole Africa's industry and trade performance have been poor in spite of national, regional, and continental plans. The contributors to this volume propose some alternative strategies and policies which are necessary for trade and industry to grow and to contribute to the well-being of Africa's people. It calls for a developmental trade and industry policy which, fundamentally, must be people-centred. African states should invest time, energy and resources to develop policies which will take into consideration African realities. The different contributors are aware that Africa has experienced strong economic growth in the recent past but this growth has largely been due to a strong demand for Africa's primary commodity exports. It has also been a result of increases in productivity and domestic investment and remittances from Africans living in the Diaspora. It is important to note that despite this unprecedented growth performance, the impact of trade and industry on development has been limited. The book argues that a structural transformation of Africa's economies is inevitable if Africa is to achieve the shift from the dominant paradigm of production and export of primary goods. The various contributors to this book agree that there is need to rethink policy and strategy in order to achieve industrial development in Africa. There is no unique solution or answer that can fit all situations as African countries are not the same. While Africa can draw lessons from other regions which have successfully industrialized, this book argues that policies and strategies will have to be adapted to country-specific situations and circumstances.

Book Special Economic Zones in Africa

Download or read book Special Economic Zones in Africa written by Thomas Farole and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book, designed for policymakers, academics and researchers, and SEZ program practitioners, provides the first systematic and comprehensive analysis of SEZ programs in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the result of detailed surveys and case studies conducted during 2009 in ten developing countries, including six in Sub-Saharan Africa. The book provides quantitative evidence of the performance of SEZs, and of the factors which contribute to that performance, highlighting the critical importance not just of the SEZ itself but of the wider national investment climate in which it functions. It also provides a comprehensive guide to the key policy questions that confront governments establishing SEZ programs, including: if and when to launch an SEZ program, what form of SEZ is most appropriate, and how to go about implementing it. Among the most important findings from the study that is stressed in the book is the shift from traditional enclave models of zones to SEZs that are integrated ? with national trade and industrial strategies, with core trade and social infrastructure, with domestic suppliers, and with local labor markets.Although the book focuses primarily on the experience of Sub-Saharan Africa, its lessons will be applicable to developing countries around the world."
