Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed from celebrated Harvard statistics lectures, Introduction to Probability provides essential language and tools for understanding statistics, randomness, and uncertainty. The book explores a wide variety of applications and examples, ranging from coincidences and paradoxes to Google PageRank and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Additional application areas explored include genetics, medicine, computer science, and information theory. The authors present the material in an accessible style and motivate concepts using real-world examples. Throughout, they use stories to uncover connections between the fundamental distributions in statistics and conditioning to reduce complicated problems to manageable pieces. The book includes many intuitive explanations, diagrams, and practice problems. Each chapter ends with a section showing how to perform relevant simulations and calculations in R, a free statistical software environment. The second edition adds many new examples, exercises, and explanations, to deepen understanding of the ideas, clarify subtle concepts, and respond to feedback from many students and readers. New supplementary online resources have been developed, including animations and interactive visualizations, and the book has been updated to dovetail with these resources. Supplementary material is available on Joseph Blitzstein’s website www. stat110.net. The supplements include: Solutions to selected exercises Additional practice problems Handouts including review material and sample exams Animations and interactive visualizations created in connection with the edX online version of Stat 110. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical methods of measurements are the most sensitive techniques of noncontact investigations, and at the same time, they are fast as well as accurate which increases reproducibility of observed results. In recent years, the importance of optical interferometry methods for research has dramatically increased, and applications range from precise surface testing to finding extrasolar planets. This book covers various aspects of optical interferometry including descriptions of novel apparatuses and methods, application interferometry for studying biological objects, surface qualities, materials characterization, and optical testing. The book includes a series of chapters in which experts share recent progress in interferometry through original research and literature reviews.

Book A User s Guide to Business Analytics

Download or read book A User s Guide to Business Analytics written by Ayanendranath Basu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A User's Guide to Business Analytics provides a comprehensive discussion of statistical methods useful to the business analyst. Methods are developed from a fairly basic level to accommodate readers who have limited training in the theory of statistics. A substantial number of case studies and numerical illustrations using the R-software package are provided for the benefit of motivated beginners who want to get a head start in analytics as well as for experts on the job who will benefit by using this text as a reference book. The book is comprised of 12 chapters. The first chapter focuses on business analytics, along with its emergence and application, and sets up a context for the whole book. The next three chapters introduce R and provide a comprehensive discussion on descriptive analytics, including numerical data summarization and visual analytics. Chapters five through seven discuss set theory, definitions and counting rules, probability, random variables, and probability distributions, with a number of business scenario examples. These chapters lay down the foundation for predictive analytics and model building. Chapter eight deals with statistical inference and discusses the most common testing procedures. Chapters nine through twelve deal entirely with predictive analytics. The chapter on regression is quite extensive, dealing with model development and model complexity from a user’s perspective. A short chapter on tree-based methods puts forth the main application areas succinctly. The chapter on data mining is a good introduction to the most common machine learning algorithms. The last chapter highlights the role of different time series models in analytics. In all the chapters, the authors showcase a number of examples and case studies and provide guidelines to users in the analytics field.

Book Computer Performance Evaluation Modelling Techniques and Tools

TOOLS 2003, held in Urbana, Illinois during September 2–5, 2003, was the most recent meeting of the series, which in the past has been held in the following cities: 1984 Paris 1992 Edinburgh 2000 Chicago 1985 Sophia-Antipolis 1994 Vienna 2002 London 1987 Paris 1995 Heidelberg 2003 Urbana 1988 Palma 1997 Saint Malo 1991 Turin 1998 Palma TheproceedingsoftheTOOLSconferenceshavebeenpublishedbySpringer- Verlag in its LNCS series since 1994. TOOLS2003wasthesecondconferenceintheseriestobeheldinthestateof Illinois, USA. It was one of four component conferences that met together under the umbrella of the 2003 Illinois Multiconference on Measurement, Modelling, and Evaluation of Computer-Communication Systems. Other conferences held inconjunctionwithTOOLS2003werethe10thInternationalWorkshoponPetri Nets and Performance Models (PNPM 2003), the International Conference on the Numerical Solution of Markov Chains (NSMC 2003), and the 6th Inter- tional Workshop on Performability Modeling of Computer and Communication Systems (PMCCS-6). The format allowed for a number of joint components in the programs: the three keynote speakers, the tool demonstrations, the tutorials, and the social events were all shared by the participants of the multiconference. Moreover, the PNPM, TOOLS, and NSMC tracks of the multiconference ran concurrently, so that attendees could choose to attend whichever sessions of those component conferences they wished.

They give users direct access to internal methods and data structures of MuPAD and allow it to be extended with almost any desired feature. Programming and creating dynamic modules is facilitated by the MuPAD Application Programming Interface MAPI and a special generator. This book is addressed to users and developers of dynamic modules in MuPAD. The accompanying CD-ROM includes a hypertext version of the manual and a trial version of MuPAD 1.4.1 for Linux and Solaris 2.5.
