Book excerpt: FACs (forward air controllers) in Vietnam flew low and slow, searching for signs of an elusive enemy. Often they trolled themselves as bait for the NVA troops to try to shoot down. When a friendly unit made contact, having a FAC overhead made their day because the FACs controlled the bomb-, rocket-, and napalm-laden fast movers, fighter jets and attack aircraft whose ordnance often made the difference between life and death. They were regarded by many of their airforce and naval aviator brethren as insane, suicidal, or both. In addition to the perils of enemy fire which ranged from lucky AK-47 shots to .51 caliber machine guns and SA-7 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, you had to watch out to keep from being blown up in a B-52 Arc-Light strike or knocked down by friendly artillery. As the title suggests, however, Naked in Da Nang is not an angst ridden account of mortal combat. Following in the footsteps of Richard Hooker's classic M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, author Jackson has a keen eye for the absurdities that abound in a combat zone. That the humor is often dark only serves to sharpen its comic edge.- These pilots were considered the "Guardian Angels" of the Vietnam ground soldier- Refers to the "unarmed" nature of FAC (Forward Air Controllers) aircraft- Low-tech aircraft that survived combat on pilot skills only

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All-out war edges closer... Taking the fight to the sea, the Americans attempt to cut off the weapons and supplies flowing to the Viet Cong. Colonel Lansdale’s paramilitary teams are up to their old tricks executing multiple raids and demoralizing the North. The Viet Cong struggle to combat helicopters and warplanes flown by covert American pilots. Losing ground to South Vietnamese forces, the VC’s war-proven tactics do not work against the new technology. If the revolution is to survive, the VC must find a new strategy to deal with the Americans. The Cold War raises its ugly head in Cuba and threatens to engulf the world in a nuclear war. Kennedy is again put to the test by Khrushchev. Any miscalculation by the leaders of either nation could cost the lives of tens of millions as the Cuban Missile Crisis unfolds. As time runs short before a key operative is revealed and executed, American pilot Tom Coyle enlists the help of CIA sniper Rene Granier in a daring covert mission into the heart of North Vietnam. The war suffers a major shift at the Battle of Ap Bac as the Americans begin to recognize the true nature of the enemy they are fighting to keep South Vietnam free. Like all the historical novels in the Airmen Series, The Uncivil War is based on true events and real people. It’s full of military action, suspense, and detail about the final days before the fateful decision to commit American ground troops to Vietnam.

  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2020-10-29
  • ISBN : 1472839285

Download or read book The French 75 written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Soixantequinze', France's legendary 75mm Modele 1897, was the first modern field gun, pioneering several critical innovations in field artillery designs, including a fast action breech and a soft recoil system. Although some of these features had been incorporated into earlier guns, the 75mm M1897 integrated them into a superior, lightweight field gun. The 75mm M1897 earned its reputation in the Great War, forming the backbone of French field artillery. It was widely distributed to Allied armies, including the American Expeditionary Forces and was also widely exported after World War I around the globe. It was manufactured under licence in numerous countries, including the United States, which used the gun in its initial Pacific campaigns. Due to its modernity and sound design, the 75mm remained in service well into World War II. It was used by the French, Polish and other armies in the Blitzkrieg campaigns of 1939–1940 and thousands were captured by the German Army in 1940 and used for coastal defence. Surprisingly, many were also converted into a very effective anti-tank gun, the PaK 97/38. These weapons lingered in service after World War II, though by this time, they were largely obsolete. This fascinating book explores the history of the 75mm Modele 1897 in detail, from its design and development to its deployment around the world. The text is supported by stunning, specially commissioned artwork including three-dimensional views of the gun and its variants.
