Book Explosive Sources for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion Supplement 1

Download or read book Explosive Sources for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion Supplement 1 written by Marvin W. Burnham and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results are reported for peripherally initiated disc-shaped solid explosives. These produced a relative acceleration of the detonation wave near the charge axis. The results are compared with three approximate models. An energy model is compared with the more conventional pressure model. High pressure was induced in a portion of a long rectangular charge by shock. Rather high detonation wave propagation rates were observed in the shocked region. These rates were as high as nine times steady state if the maximum slope of the position-time result was used and as high as two times steady state velocity if the average rate over the approximate shocked region were used. The results are considered tentative. (Author).

Book Explosive Sources for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion

Download or read book Explosive Sources for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion written by Marvin W. Burnham and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary concepts of detonation theory are discussed primarily in the classical context. An illustration of the essential non-linearity of the equations is given. Several assumptions utilized in current theories are discussed and experiments designed to evaluate the validity of these are described. All discussion is from a continuum point of view. Information related to the use of explosives as energy sources for magnetohydrodynamic energy conversion is given. Instrumentation used in the experiments is discussed. (Author).

Book Explosive Parameters for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion

Download or read book Explosive Parameters for Magnetohydrodynamic Energy Conversion written by Marvin W. Burnham and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosive charge parameters related to the efficiency and utility of explosive energy sources for pulsed magnetohydrodynamic energy conversion were investigated. Experimental measurements were made of theoretically signif icant charge geometry and composition parameters. Good agreement with theory was observed and exceptionally high plasma conductivity was measured. A cavity shape, (called the W cavity) tending to produce a tubular conductor, was conceived and charges designed with such a cav-had a power generation capability of over 300% higher than that of charges with con ventional cavities. Book Explosive Magnetohydrodynamic Program

Download or read book Explosive Magnetohydrodynamic Program written by C. D. Bangerter and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is basically an analytic study with the addition of design and experimental data required to augment the study. The analysis presented is conclusive in its finding that the X-MHD is a highly versatile prime power source which can be operated without benefit of vacuum equipment in residual ambient pressure gases of various composition and at high repetition rate with various loads. At high repetition rate, the spent explosion products of a previous round are an ideal residual or purge gas. Energy conversion efficiency in excess of 10% should be attainable with optimized residual gases at ambient pressure, and 5-10% with spent explosion product residual gases at field levels currently achieveable with superconducting magnets. Book Experimental Studies of Explosively Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Generators

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Explosively Driven Magnetohydrodynamic Generators written by F. Agee and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of High Power Microwaves (HPM) has evolved as a result of advances in the field of pulsed power, which has made pulses of electrical energy available that can drive HPM sources to gigawatt levels. One of the most compact forms of pulsed power involves the storage of chemical energy in the form of explosive charges. Explosive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generators are electrical power sources, which convert the kinetic energy of moving plasma into useful electrical energy through the magnetic portion of the Lorentz force. This report describes research conducted by the Air Force Research Laboratory to test specific designs of explosively driven magnetohydrodynamic generators. The goal of the research was to investigate the use of gigawatt generators in driving reactive loads appropriate to diode, and ultimately HPM applications. Two test series were performed, the first of which consisted of experiments on a low voltage generator and the second of which had the goal of scaling the existing design to higher voltage while retaining the reactive-type load. The complex problem of diagnostics of the plasma in this explosive test was addressed using fast, temporally resolved, plasma measurements, as well as spectroscopic plasma constituent measurements.

Book Inductive Measurement of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity

Download or read book Inductive Measurement of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity written by M. W. Turner and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of plasma jet electrical conductivity has utility in the development of explosively driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy converters as well as magnetic flux compression reaction chambers for nuclear/chemical pulse propulsion and power. Within these types of reactors, the physical parameter of critical importance to underlying MHD processes is the magnetic Reynolds number, the value of which depends upon the product of plasma electrical conductivity and velocity. Therefore, a thorough understanding of MHD phenomena at high magnetic Reynolds number is essential, and methods are needed for the accurate and reliable measurement of electrical conductivity in high-speed plasma jets. It is well known that direct measurements using electrodes suffer from large surface resistances, and an electrodeless technique is desired.

Book Megagauss Physics and Technology

Download or read book Megagauss Physics and Technology written by Peter J. Turchi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation and use of megagauss magnetic fields have been subjects of research and development in laboratories around the world for over a quarter of a century. Research goals have included the development of compact, short-pulse, electrical power sources and the production of ultrahigh magnetic field strengths over significant experimental volumes. Energies measured in megajoules, currents in megamperes and timescales of microseconds are not uncommon in such work. Phase changes, insulator breakdowns, and local des truction of the apparatus are also frequently encountered. Some efforts have involved the use of high explosive systems, developing methodologies rather distinct from those of a normal physics laboratory. Manipulation of magnetic flux to exchange energy between high speed, electrically conducting flows and high strength electromagnetic fields remains, of course, a basic interaction of classical physics. The remoteness of the necessary experimental sites (at least in many instances) and the various national concerns for security of defense-related research have often limited the flow of information between investigators of separate organizations, working in common areas of technical concern. Occa sionally, however, it has been possible for the community of scientists and engineers engaged in work on high magnetic fields and related high energy den sity systems to gather together and exchange results and plans, successes and failures. The first such international gathering was in 1965 at the Conference on Megagauss Magnetic Field Generation by Explosives and Related Experi ments, Frascati, Italy.
