Book Ludwig s Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents

Download or read book Ludwig s Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents written by A. Kayode Coker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 978 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig's Applied Process Design for Chemical and Petrochemical Plants Incorporating Process Safety Incidents is ever evolving starting with the first edition some 60 years ago. The volumes in this fifth edition provide improved techniques and fundamental design methodologies to guide the practicing engineer in designing process equipment and applying chemical processes to the properly detailed hardware. As indicative of the new title, process safety incidents are incorporated in many of the chapters, reviewing the root causes, and how these could be mitigated in future. Like its predecessor, this new edition continues to present updated information for achieving optimum operational and process conditions and to avoid problems caused by inadequate sizing and lack of internally detailed hardware. The volumes provide both fundamental theories where applicable and direct application of these theories to applied equations essential in the design effort. This approach in presenting design information is essential for troubleshooting process equipment and in executing system performance analysis. Volume 1B continues to cover mixing of liquids, process safety and pressure[1]relieving devices, metallurgy and corrosion, and process optimization. It builds upon Ernest E. Ludwig's classic text to further enhance its use as a chemical engineering process design manual of methods and proven fundamentals. This new edition includes new content on three-phase separation, mixing of liquids, ejectors, and mechanical vacuum systems, process safety and pressure-relieving devices, metallurgy and corrosion, and optimization of chemical process/blending. Some chapters review pressure-relieving devices and provide case studies for process safety incidents, which are well illustrated from US Chemical Safety Hazard Investigation Board (www.csb.gov). Finally, this book contains a glossary of Petroleum and Petrochemical Terminologies and Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Major Hydrocarbons.? Provides improved design manual for methods and proven fundamentals of process design with related data and charts? Covers complete range of basic day-to-day petrochemical operation topics? Extensively revised with new material added on three-phase separation, metallurgy, and corrosion? Process safety management/HAZOP and hazard analyses, and optimization of chemical process/blending? Presents many examples using Honeywell UniSim Design software, developed and executable computer programs, and Excel spreadsheet programs? Includes case studies of process safety incidents, guidance for troubleshooting, and checklists? Includes Software of Conversion Table and 30+ process data sheets in excel format

Book Dust Explosions

Download or read book Dust Explosions written by Jean Cross and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest of the media in dust explosions increased considerably following two major grain-elevator disasters in the United States in 1979. However, these were not isolated incidents and were statistically unusual only in the high loss of life involved. Any oxidizable material that is dispersed in fine powder form may be explosive, and ignition sources with sufficient energy to ignite a dust cloud are easily produced in normal industrial processing. Dust fires and minor incidents are not uncommon in many industries, but fortunately the combination of events and circumstances that must coincide for a large-scale explosion arise only rarely. Nevertheless, this is often more by luck than by good management and many potentially hazardous situations are common in industry. An explosive dust cloud and the circumstances in which it can ignite are not as simple to define as the equivalent situation in gases or flammable vapors. A large number of definitions and experimental tests have been devised to characterize the explosibility of dusts and ignition sources. The aim of this book is to provide a guide describing conditions in industry that could lead to dust explosions and the means to avoid them. Ignition sources and the way in which they can arise in powder processing are discussed and illustrated by case histories of reported incidents. The methods by which the potential hazards of a process or product can be evaluated are described, with special attention paid to the interpretation of the results of the different experimental methods.

Book Explosion Hazards and Evaluation

Download or read book Explosion Hazards and Evaluation written by W.E. Baker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explosion Hazards and Evaluation presents the principles and applications of explosion hazards evaluation. The text is organized into nine chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the energy release processes which generate accidental explosions, and the resulting development of pressure and shock waves in a surrounding atmosphere. The manner in which the "free-field" waves are modified in interacting with structures or other objects in their paths is discussed in Chapter 3. Structural response to blast loading and non-penetrating impact is covered in two chapters, with Chapter 4 including simplified analysis methods and Chapter 5 including numerical methods. Chapter 6 includes a rather comprehensive treatment of generation of fragments and missiles in explosions, and the flight and effects of impact of these objects. Chapter 7 considers thermal radiation of large chemical explosions. Explosions may or may not cause damage or casualty, and various damage criteria have been developed for structures, vehicles, and people. These criteria are presented in Chapter 8. General procedures for both the postmortem evaluation of accidental explosions and for design for blast and impact resistance are reviewed in Chapter 9. Engineers, scientists, and plant safety personnel will find the book very useful.
