Book excerpt: "Dying To Exist" offers 104 uplifting stories of women and men who planned on aborting their babies when they found out they were pregnant but changed their minds and had them. These true, heartwarming and inspiring stories share how the abortions had been planned but were not carried through; all had considered abortions but changed their minds. Some women decided on abortions quickly due to an unplanned teenage pregnancy while others thought about it for a while or were pressured into it. Some told close friends and families about their pregnancies when they first discovered they were pregnant; others didn't tell anyone or told only one person - the father, a parent or friend. Some agonized over whether to go through with an abortion due to their beliefs while others considered abortion because they did not have the financial resources to raise a child. Still others weighed both physical and psychological effects of abortion as they struggled with thoughts of terminating their pregnancies. You'll read stories of mothers and fathers who live with the regret, shame and guilt of considering abortion. Some parents who chose not to abort say their babies are gifts from God or that having their babies was something that was meant to be. All look at their babies today and say how they have turned into the biggest blessings of their lives. They all knew their lives would change if they had an abortion - and if they did not have an abortion. You'll read touching stories from women who had support from their families and the fathers, and others who did not. While most of the mothers and fathers chose to raise their babies, some decided on giving up baby for adoption. These moving and poignant real-life stories are comforting and encouraging. They speak of women and men who do not regret having their babies and who feel they could never have lived with themselves if they had gone through with the abortions. All feel that having their babies has given them a new life's purpose and that their lives are forever changed by their children's births. We know you'll be filled with inspiration, comfort and hope as you read about mothers and fathers who now have a new outlook on pregnancy and abortion; who now believe that life and babies are beautiful gifts. "Dying To Exist" is good for crisis pregnancy centers, abortion alternative centers, counselors, psychologists, pastors, family and friends of women and men facing unexpected pregnancies, and anyone who finds themselves with an unplanned pregnancy and isn't sure what to do or where to turn.

Book Unwanted Pregnancy and Counselling

Download or read book Unwanted Pregnancy and Counselling written by Juliet Cheetham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a growing concern in the 1970s about the number of unwanted pregnancies and the problems these posed for parents, children and society. Originally published in 1977, this was the first book which, with extensive reference to research material and illustrative case studies, provided a comprehensive analysis of the social and psychological background to unwanted pregnancy and a guide to ways of helping the people concerned. It should still be useful to doctors, nurses, midwives, teachers, social workers, and other professional and lay people whose work brings them into contact with those who are unhappy about a pregnancy. Juliet Cheetham, whose previous contributions to the problem areas of social welfare are widely respected, discusses the different meanings of unwanted pregnancy, and goes on to explore its relationship to the changing position of women; to the role of the contemporary family; to the special problems experienced by natural children and their parents; to existing social and medical provisions. She examines the possibilities, risks and limitations of the various responses to unwanted pregnancy and the services available at the time, and analyses the difficulties men and women experience in using contraception. Juliet Cheetham shows how the beliefs and attitudes of lay and professional people can influence their understanding of, and response to, these highly controversial and emotional subjects. She offers suggestions about the ways in which this influence may be appropriately modified, and the book concludes with a discussion of the special opportunities and problems of counselling those faced with an unwanted pregnancy.

Book The Best Intentions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Institute of Medicine
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1995-06-02
  • ISBN : 0309176549
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book The Best Intentions written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-06-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts estimate that nearly 60 percent of all U.S. pregnanciesâ€"and 81 percent of pregnancies among adolescentsâ€"are unintended. Yet the topic of preventing these unintended pregnancies has long been treated gingerly because of personal sensitivities and public controversies, especially the angry debate over abortion. Additionally, child welfare advocates long have overlooked the connection between pregnancy planning and the improved well-being of families and communities that results when children are wanted. Now, current issuesâ€"health care and welfare reform, and the new international focus on populationâ€"are drawing attention to the consequences of unintended pregnancy. In this climate The Best Intentions offers a timely exploration of family planning issues from a distinguished panel of experts. This committee sheds much-needed light on the questions and controversies surrounding unintended pregnancy. The book offers specific recommendations to put the United States on par with other developed nations in terms of contraceptive attitudes and policies, and it considers the effectiveness of over 20 pregnancy prevention programs. The Best Intentions explores problematic definitionsâ€""unintended" versus "unwanted" versus "mistimed"â€"and presents data on pregnancy rates and trends. The book also summarizes the health and social consequences of unintended pregnancies, for both men and women, and for the children they bear. Why does unintended pregnancy occur? In discussions of "reasons behind the rates," the book examines Americans' ambivalence about sexuality and the many other social, cultural, religious, and economic factors that affect our approach to contraception. The committee explores the complicated web of peer pressure, life aspirations, and notions of romance that shape an individual's decisions about sex, contraception, and pregnancy. And the book looks at such practical issues as the attitudes of doctors toward birth control and the place of contraception in both health insurance and "managed care." The Best Intentions offers frank discussion, synthesis of data, and policy recommendations on one of today's most sensitive social topics. This book will be important to policymakers, health and social service personnel, foundation executives, opinion leaders, researchers, and concerned individuals.

Book Giving Up Baby

Download or read book Giving Up Baby written by Laury Oaks and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Baby safe haven" laws, which allow a parent to relinquish a newborn baby legally and anonymously at a specified institutional location--such as a hospital or fire station--were established in every state between 1999 and 2009. Promoted during a time of heated public debate over policies on abortion, sex education, teen pregnancy, adoption, welfare, immigrant reproduction, and child abuse, safe haven laws were passed by the majority of states with little contest. These laws were thought to offer a solution to the consequences of unwanted pregnancies: mothers would no longer be burdened with children they could not care for, and newborn babies would no longer be abandoned in dumpsters. Yet while these laws are well meaning, they inadequately address the social injustices that compel abandonment for the very small number of girls and women who abandon their newborns. Advocates of safe haven laws target teenagers, women of color and poor women in particular with safe haven information under the assumption that they cannot offer good homes for their children. Laury Oaks argues that the labeling of certain kinds of women as potential "bad" mothers who should consider anonymously giving up their newborns for adoption into a "loving" home should best be understood as an issue of reproductive justice. Safe haven discourses promote narrow images of who deserves to be a mother and reflect restrictive views on how we should treat women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.
