Book excerpt: Exploring Popular World Music is the first introductory level text written to introduce students to popular music styles from around the world. Focusing on styles that all students will know -- from Reggae to Klezmer, from Afro-Pop to Kodo drums--the book offers a comprehensive, listening-oriented introduction to the world's popular musical cultures. Each chapter will focus on a specific music style and its associated geographic locale. The salient musical and cultural features associated with each example are discussed in detail to increase our appreciation of the music. Relevant artists will be highlighted and suggestions for further reading and listening will be offered. By the end of the book, the student should be able to 1) recognize a variety of world music styles, 2) articulate musical and cultural knowledge associated with each style, and 3) identify important artists related to the genre. Supplementing the text will be a web site fcreated by the author) featuring the author's world music map, enabling students to explore pop music cultures as they relate to each other; as well as an iTunes playlist for all the highlighted selections in the book. This book should strongly appeal to Intro to World Music Courses for non-majors who wish to study popular rather than traditional musics of the world, which would encompass a large majority of students enrolled in these courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What in the World is Music? Second Edition is an undergraduate, interactive e-textbook that explores the shared ways people engage with music and how humans organize and experience sound. It adopts a global approach, featuring more than 300 streaming videos and 50 streaming audio tracks of music from around the world. Drawing from both musicological and ethnomusicological modes of inquiry, the authors explain the nature and meaning of music as a universal human practice, making no distinction between Western and non-Western repertoires while providing students with strong points of connection to the ways it affects their own lives. The What in the World is Music? curriculum is divided into five parts, with a fully integrated multimedia program linked directly to the chapters: The Foundations of Music I proposes a working definition of "music" and considers inquiry-guided approaches to its study: Why do humans have innate musical perception? How does this ability manifest itself in the human voice? A catalog of musical instruments showcases global diversity and human ingenuity. The Foundations of Music II continues the inquiry-guided approach, recognizing the principles by which musical sound is organized while discussing elements such as rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form, genre, and style. Where did music come from? What is it for? Music and Identity examines how music operates in shaping, negotiating, and expressing human identity and is organized around three broad conceptual frames: the group, hybridity, and conflict. Music and the Sacred addresses how music is used in religious practices throughout the world: chanting sacred texts and singing devotional verses, inspiring religious experience such as ecstasy and trance, and marking and shaping ritual space and time. Music and Social Life analyzes the uses of music in storytelling, theater, and film. It delves into the contributions of sound technologies, while looking at the many ways music enhances nightlife, public ceremonies, and festivals.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Marburg (Anglistik), course: New Media in Foreign Language Teaching, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction Music videos are an important part of the lifestyle of many youths, they have been spread over the whole world by the television channel MTV (Music Television)1 and they have become an essential aspect of the popular culture. Obviously, the Hessian curriculum has realized the importance of music videos: The topic "Young People Exploring the World" ("Jugendliche und ihre Welt") for 11th grade includes the sub-topic "Culture and Media" ("Kultur und Medien")2. This sub-topic deals with all sorts of pop culture, (music, videos, literature, advertisements, fashion, sports, etc.). Music videos are excellent for matters of foreign language education, they provide authentic material3, which is a welcome variation for many pupils who are only used to artificial learning materials, and they are very interesting for pupils because they are part of their everyday life. Therefore, music videos provide a brilliant opportunity for the pupils to discuss and analyse. Through thorough analysis of music videos, the pupils will become aware of how music videos are made and which impact they can have on us, and also which ethical values they propagate (as well by the lyrics of the specific song as well by the composition of the video itself) or in which ways they reflect our society. It is important that the pupils are allowed to choose their own music videos, because then they will be more motivated as if the videos were selected by the teacher. However, the teacher should become acquainted with the specific video before it is presented to the class by the pupil because there are, of course, music videos, which are not suitable (for example, because the content could be too violent or sexual to be presented in the classroom or the video could be too l
