Download or read book Hydrogen Bonded Polymers written by Wolfgang Binder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-03-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of polymeric structure is among the most important endeavours of modern macromolecular science. In particular, tailoring the positioning and strength of intermolecular forces within macromolecules by synthetic methods and thus gaining structural control over the final polymeric materials has become feasible, resulting in the field of supramolecular polymer science. Besides other intermolecular forces, hydrogen bonds are unique intermolecular forces enabling the tuning of material properties via self-assembly processes over a wide range of interactions strength ranging from several kJmol to several tens of kJmol . Central for the formation of these structures are precursor molecules of small molecular weight (usually lower than 10 000), which can assemble in solid or solution to aggregates of defined geometry.
Download or read book Structure and Rheology of Molten Polymers written by John M. Dealy and published by Carl Hanser Verlag GmbH Co KG. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in polymer science have made it possible to relate quantitatively molecular structure to rheological behavior. At the same time, new methods of synthesis and characterization allow the preparation and structural verification of samples having a range of branched polymeric structures. This book unites this knowledge to enable production of polymers with prescribed processability and end-product properties. Methods of polymer synthesis and characterization are described, starting from fundamentals. The foundations of linear viscoelasticity are introduced, and then the linear behavior of entangled polymers is described in detail. This is followed by a discussion of the molecular modeling of linear behavior. Tube models for both linear and branched polymers are presented. The final two chapters deal with nonlinear rheological behavior and tube models to describe nonlinearity. In this second edition, each chapter has been significantly rewritten to account for recent advances in experimental methods and theoretical modeling. It includes new and updated material on developments in polymer synthesis and characterization, computational algorithms for linear and nonlinear rheology prediction, measurement of nonlinear viscoelasticity, entanglement detection algorithms in molecular dynamics, nonlinear constitutive equations, and instabilities. Contents: - Structure of Polymers - Polymerization Reactions and Processes - Linear Viscoelasticity - Fundamentals - Linear Viscoelasticity - Behavior of Molten Polymers - Tube Models for Linear Polymers - Fundamentals - Tube Models for Linear Polymers - Advanced Topics - Determination of Molecular Weight Distribution Using Rheology - Tube Models for Branched Polymers - Nonlinear Viscoelasticity - Tube Models for Nonlinear Viscoelasticity of Linear and Branched Polymers

Download or read book Cyclobutadiene and Related Compounds written by M.P. Cava and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyclobutadiene and Related Compounds describes the four-membered carbocyclic compounds that have only trigonally hybridized carbon atoms in the ring. The book discusses the chemistry of cyclobutadiene and the substituted cyclobutadienes, including the preparation of cyclobutadiene-metal complexes that can be done in four ways. These are (1) by reaction of acetylenes with transition metal compounds, (2) from cyclobutenyl metal complexes, (3) by transformation of other cyclobutadiene-metal complexes, and (4) by trapping cyclobutadienes with transitional metal compounds. The text also describes cyclobutadiene dianion, the chemistry of the cyclobutadienequinones, the condensed methylenecyclobutene aromatic systems, and the higher aromatic analogs of benzocyclobutadiene. The book cites proofs of the structure of biphenylene using chemical and physical methods. The text also presents theoretical aspects of the cyclobutadiene problem including studies regarding the ?-electronic state of cyclobutadiene; the comparisons of some of these studies; the framework energies and Janh-Teller considerations; and the substituted cyclobutadienes, cyclobutadiene divalent ions, and metal complexes. This book is suitable for scientists and researchers working in the field of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and molecular physics.

Download or read book Polymer or Macrocycle Cobalt Complexes of Ditopic 2 2 6 2 Terpyridine Ligands with Flexible Spacers written by Emily Kate Harris and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reaction of transition metal ions with ditopic ligands containing two 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine units linked by flexible spacers can give metallosupramolecular polymers, discrete metallomacrocycles or mixtures of the two. The outcome of the coordination depends on the precise reaction conditions as well as the nature of the spacer and the transition metal salt. This thesis is concerned with the reaction between cobalt(II) salts and bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) ligands in which the metal-binding domains are linked by flexible oligo(ethylene glycol) spacers. An initial study of the ligands and several model mononuclear bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) and (III) complexes gave some insight into the solid state and solution properties of these systems, and PGSE NMR spectroscopy was found to be a useful tool for determination of the size of both the ligands and the cobalt(III) complexes in solution. The reaction of the ditopic ligands with cobalt(II) acetate tetrahydrate in pure alcohol was found to cause the decomposition of the ligand and the formation of a mononuclear bis(4'-alkoxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complex. This reaction was extended to monotopic 4'-substituted-2,2':6',2"-terpyridines and can be considered as a reaction giving rise to polymer end-capping units, thus influencing the final outcome of the coordination. The effect of the anion on the coordination was considered further, and the speciation of mono- and bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes in solution was investigated using the 4'-methoxy-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine ligand. The product mixtures were found to depend heavily on the anion, solvent and initial ratio of ligand to metal salt. Similar behaviour was observed for a model ditopic ligand. The presence of the mono(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes within a system containing the ditopic ligands would also provide polymer end-capping units, influencing the speciation of these mixtures. Finally, a detailed study of the product mixtures obtained from the reactions of the ditopic ligands with cobalt(II) salts revealed a complex dependence of the speciation of many bis(2,2':6',2"-terpyridine)cobalt(II) complexes on the ligand, anion, solvent, concentration and other seemingly minor reaction parameters. Using the PGSE NMR spectroscopic technique, the sizes of some of the metallomacrocyclic species present in the equilibrium mixtures could be determined. These measurements were in excellent agreement with X-ray crystallographic data. Analysis of initial product mixtures using the same technique suggested that the initial kinetic products of the complexation are significantly larger species.
