Book excerpt: The study assessed change in self-efficacy, self-esteem, and problem behaviors from pre-treatment to post-treatment and at 6-month follow-up for adolescent girls enrolled in an outdoor adventure program. Book Wilderness Therapy for Women

Download or read book Wilderness Therapy for Women written by Ellen Cole and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilderness Therapy for Women offers women risktaking adventure activities in the outdoors as an alternative to traditional therapy. The contributing authors illustrate the empowerment, confidence, and self-esteem women can derive from adventure and experiential activities. This is the first book of its kind devoted to the symbolic value of wilderness accomplishments to women's mental health. Wilderness Therapy for Women unites women with nature and each other by lifting the social constraints surrounding women in adventure pursuits. It offers women a new method of healing while developing an appreciation for the uniqueness of the environment. Daring experiences in the outdoors rekindles a sense of strength and a respect for the provider of that strength. A therapeutic experience from the outdoors provides women with an awareness of their capabilities to strengthen and preserve themselves and their surroundings. This book is divided into four parts: Theoretical Perspectives, Wilderness Therapy in Action, Special Populations, and Personal Narratives. Readers will find many topics of interest including: Body image and wilderness therapy The therapeutic value of the wilderness Ethical considerations of experiential therapy Ropes courses for women All-women's river trips Special populations: rape and incest survivors, welfare mothers, and mid-life women. Intended as a guide book, Wilderness Therapy for Women is ideal for mental health professionals who are either practicing wilderness therapy or merely inquisitive about it. Outfitters and professional outdoor leaders will benefit from chapters on theory, applications, and special populations. Outdoor program administrators and educators who must remain on the cutting edge of their industry will also profit from this book.

Book Being Comfortable with the Uncomfortable Adolescent Girl s i e Girls Experiences of an Extended Outdoor Adventure Program

Download or read book Being Comfortable with the Uncomfortable Adolescent Girl s i e Girls Experiences of an Extended Outdoor Adventure Program written by Kelli Anne Talley and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developmental stage of adolescence is a difficult time for young people, particularly girls. Research shows that girls often struggle during this period with low self-esteem, a lack of confidence, depression, and poor body image. Outdoor adventure programming has several positive outcomes, including providing adolescent girls with authentic experiences that allow them to challenge themselves, build connections with others, and develop life tools to overpower the negative societal influences of genders stereotypes and unrealistic pressures. Numerous studies confirm these outcomes. However, most of these studies looked at programs that lasted a few days to several weeks. Due to the importance of improving adolescent development for girls, this study examined the impacts of long-term exposure to outdoor adventure programming for adolescent girls. The injury employs a qualitative analysis to share the stories of 8th-grade students at the French Broad River Academy for girls. This private middle school utilizes outdoor education regularly. Students reflected on what outdoor adventure programming meant to them during their 2.5 years at the school. They did this over a semester by taking pictures of their outdoor experiences on disposable cameras. At the conclusion of the semester, students used photo-elicitation to share their experiences by using their photos to share their stories in focus group interviews. Emergent themes from the focus groups included: Relationship & Community, Perseverance & Resiliency, Enjoyment & Finding Beauty in Nature, Leadership & Confidence, and Individual Growth.

Book excerpt: In this project I attempted to demonstrate the value of experiential/adventure-based programs by reviewing experiential theory, relevant literature, and specific benefits of ropes courses for adolescent girls. Participants' perceptions of group social support and self-efficacy improved significantly after their ropes course experience. A month following the experience, perceptions of group social support remained improved while participants' self-efficacy returned to baseline. Particiapants' self-esteem did not change as a function of the experience while perceptions of their general friends' social support and attributional style improved slightly. The overall positive effect of a responsible and well-prepared ropes course experience was relfected in participants' qualitative responses.

Book The Exploration of Physical Self Efficacy and a Youth Sport Program for Adolescent Girls

Download or read book The Exploration of Physical Self Efficacy and a Youth Sport Program for Adolescent Girls written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the proven psychosocial benefits, sport participation levels of adolescent girls have decreased over the last two decades. Reasons for the decline in participation have been linked to a variety of barriers faced by adolescent girls. In particular, many current youth sport programs do not offer the components to attract and maintain the interest of girls. Physical self-efficacy is an important component for exercise adherence and participation. However, few researchers have examined physical self-efficacy and sport participation of adolescent girls. Exploring the psychosocial construct of physical self-efficacy is important in relation to girls' participation in physical activity and sport. The purpose of my study was to determine if adolescent girls participating in a youth running program would score higher on physical self efficacy than adolescent girls not participating in the youth running program. The Physical Self-Efficacy Scale (Ryckman et al., 1982) was used to investigate physical self-efficacy for a sample of 40 adolescent girls, ages 8 to 12 years old from Wake and Durham counties participating in the youth running program compared to a sample of 13 adolescent girls, ages 9 to 11 years old from Wake County, not participating in the program. A t-test for Equality of Means and a non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test were used to test the significance of the relationships between the experimental group and the control group. No statistically significant difference was found in the means or mean ranks of the physical self-efficacy components.
