Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:This qualitative study was designed to gather descriptive data through the use of visual elicitation and semi structured interviews to better understand the perception of and transition experiences of Black female athletes. Specifically, this phenomenological approach explored the salient factors that influence those perceptions and looked at how factors such as race, gender, athletic identity and athletic status intersect and influence their transition experiences. A sample (N=4) of participants who identified as Black female student athletes were interviewed and five superordinate themes were identified from the data: Perceptions of Visual Profile, Lack of People of Color (POC) Representation, Impact of Identity, Microaggressions, and Perceptions of own transition. Results indicated that participant’s racial and gender and athletic identities influenced their perceptions of life beyond sport. Findings are discussed collectively and implications for training are provided.

Participants consisted of student athletes from a United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division IIA institution in the Southeastern region. Participants completed the Life After Sports Scale (LASS), a 58-item inventory utilized to qualitative domain of the LASS in which participants were visually primed with a narrative description of a student athlete that has made transition out of sport successfully. Five major themes emerged from the African American student athletes' perception of the career transition process: Inspirational Imagery Validation, Academic and Athletic Success, Classroom Accomplishments, Family Devotion, and Life After Sports. These themes are discussed in relation to relevant career development theories, athletic identity theory from the sport psychology literature, and applicable race and racial theories to sport in higher education. Future research directions and limitations are articulated.

Book excerpt: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women student-athletes are high-level athletes who experience the traditional demands of job-hunting, interviewing, and the range of emotions experienced by college students transitioning from postsecondary education into the workforce. In addition, they have unique experiences related to their collegiate playing careers ending and being women in the workplace. Guided by Nancy Schlossberg's (1981) Model for Analyzing Human Adaptation to Transition, this qualitative study explored eight former NCAA Division I women soccer players' perceptions about the transition to the workforce. The focus was on the student-athletes' psychosocial and institutional influences related to the career transition process. Five themes emerged from the interviews: 1) institutional career support, 2) transferable skills, 3) career connections, 4) moving on, and 5) advice from former student-athletes. All the participants had a positive experience being a collegiate student-athlete, but still, they felt a lack of support and resources provided to them to aid with the career transition from their coaches, athletic department, and university. The participants acknowledged that internship experiences contributed to a positive transition into the workforce but expressed challenges completing an internship opportunity due to the time demands associated with being a student-athlete. The respondents also expressed other challenges with transitioning from being a student-athlete to a young professional, but all collectively used their families, friends, and teammates for support during the transition. The former student-athletes also unanimously believed they acquired several skills such as time management, conflict management, and discipline from being student-athletes that helped them have a more successful transition. Each participant provided advice to current student-athletes and recommendations to athletic programs, coaches, and administrators about the career transition process for student-athletes.

Book excerpt: This dissertation is a critical examination of the transitional experience from high school to college for a group of student athletes from the California State University, Chico athletic program, during the 2013-14 academic school year. The research uses interviews, discourse analysis, and the photo-elicitation methods to collect data to better understand what that experience was for the group. In-depth analysis looks at change, the cultural setting inside school and the societal practices that influence identity and the transitional experience of these individuals. As a current collegiate coach, I have spent the last 15 seasons working closely with student athletes and observing their transitional experience from home to college athletics and university settings. Throughout my coaching career I have noticed that a student`s transition to college can be one of the most transformational experiences in his or her life. Over the years, one major theme has stood out as a key component to the transitional experience. A key factor is the idea of change, and what change can mean to each individual student or group as a whole. I take a critical look at how students are actually experiencing change, and what their perceptions are of the changes that occur internally as a result of their new environment. Furthermore, I look closely at the institutional environment itself as it directly or indirectly affects the student athlete through its institutional practices and perceptions of the student athlete. In addition I go in depth as to what the experience looks like across gender, race and ethnicity. How is it experienced by student athletes of color? And how can the findings from my dissertation be used to understand school to college transitions for all students?

Book excerpt: This qualitative research explored the unique experiences of Black female student athletes. Specifically, Black female student athletes at Division I (D-I), Predominantly White Institutions, academic and athletic experiences were explored as factors that may contribute to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) graduation success rate (GSR). Participants for this study included Black female student athletes from different Division I schools on the east coast. Accounts of the findings include the collection, data analysis, and interpretations drawing from the lens of Black Feminist theory, Intersectionality, and Sensemaking. The findings indicate specifically that Black female student athletes do not have unique experiences in regards to academics and athletics. The themes that emerged from academics and athletes include: transitional experiences, life and career goals, relationships with teammates and coaches, and pressure to perform. These themes are all related to the first research question. In terms of race and gender, the findings reveal that Black female student athletes struggle with racial reality, support system, self-segregation, and gender bias. During the interview process, the participants added more in-depth responses to the research question regarding race and gender differences. Many gave examples of when they faced racial or gender discrimination. It is important to note that one of the participants is an international student. I included her international race perspective in the findings section too as her viewpoint can be seen as an outlier. This study's findings and implications have the potential to support and inspire Black female student athletes, inform higher education institutions and athletic programs, and the ways in which the graduation rate gap may be reduced and/or eliminated.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore how former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) Black female student-athletes experienced their mid-major athletic departments and to better understand how they navigated these anti-Black spaces. BlackCrit theory (Dumas & Ross, 2019; Johnson, 2019), Black Feminist Thought (BFT) (Collins, 2000), and Intersectionality (Crenshaw, 1989; Collins & Bilge, 2016) comprised the theoretical framework used to examine Black female former NCAA DI student-athletes' lived experiences with athletic departments that lead, cultivate experiences, develop policies, and monitor the safety of student-athletes. Seven Black female former NCAA DI student-athletes who played at mid-major colleges or universities for four consecutive years participated in the study. Data were collected via interviews, and data analysis revealed five emerging themes: Title IX Dynamics, Issues of Race, Lack of Intuitional Support, Perceptions of and Relationships with Athletic Administration, and Anti-blackness. The identification and interpretation of these themes allow for a deeper understanding of what Black female former NCAA DI student-athletes experienced during their collegiate playing careers. Recommendations for practical and leadership levels and directions for future research to continue needed conversations with Black female current and former NCAA DI student-athletes are provided.

Managing and balancing these multiple roles not only impacts student-athletes' use of time, but also their overall college experience. The purpose of this study was to explore how collegiate student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles. This study gives voice to student-athletes' perceptions of their multiple roles, provides insight on how they navigate these roles, and examines the intersections between athletic role, academic motivation, choice of major, and career decision-making processes. Qualitative interviews were conducted employing the constant comparative analytic method as a means to gain a meaningful understanding of how student-athletes perceive and experience their multiple roles. The study sample contained 18 (eight female and 10 male) student-athletes at Sunny Hills University (shu), a large 4-year public university in Southern California. A purposeful sample technique was employed resulting in participants being either sophomore, junior, or seniors on the following shu teams: Baseball, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Men's Outdoor Track, and Women's Outdoor Track. Five overarching themes emerged from the data regarding how student-athletes perceive their academic and athletic roles: (1) Two interconnected roles; (2) Part of an elite group; (3) Athletic role is more reinforced than academic role; (4) Sensitivity to stereotypes; and (5) Career decisions: a backseat to athletics. Implications for developing a theoretical or conceptual understanding of how Role Theory and in particular role conflict, affects student-athlete and how participants' viewed their academic and athletic roles as interconnected are also highlighted. Recommendations are provided for the ncaa, academic counselors, Athletic Departments, coaches, and faculty members with the goal of encouraging these different constituencies to understand areas where their behaviors could change in order to assist student-athletes with managing the multiple responsibilities, demands, and expectations of their role. Book excerpt: "Introduction: Despite the substantial amount of literature on career transitions in sport, there is insufficient research examining the social support system within college athletics as it is an important resource for student-athletes, especially for their success later in life. Likewise, there are currently no studies exploring athletic retirement from the perspective of student-athlete support or development services, a section of athletic departments that provides programming for the success of their student-athletes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the implications of athletic retirement from the perspective of directors and/or associate directors of student-athlete support or development services of NCAA Division I universities. Methods/Data Analysis: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants (n = 8) to explore their perceptions about the factors that lead to a successful or unsuccessful transition out of sport. Participants further described how their current services and programs helped student-athletes overcome the obstacles of this transitional period. Results: An inductive data analysis was used to organize participants' responses into themes and subthemes related to the original research questions. Although programming varied by institution, the participants observed that most of their student-athletes experienced a successful transition out of sport as their services and programs helped them effectively cope with the demands of athletic retirement. When participants did cite problems with the process of athletic retirement, they reported issues surrounding a salient athletic identity, such as a lack of career development, a sudden loss of the sport environment, and mental and physical health risks. Finally, participants believed that evidence-based services and programs need to be implemented to meet the needs of both current and former student-athletes. This population makes up approximately half of the 463,000 student-athletes competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) (Irick, 2013). Previous research has explored the benefits and drawbacks of women’s participation in sport and specific experiences within the female student-athlete experience. While research heavily encourages the adolescent girl’s participation in sports, there is conflicting research regarding the impact sport has on the experiences of female student-athletes at an elite level. LaFountaine (2007) found that female student-athletes are not thriving in relation to various aspects of holistic wellness. However, McLester, Hardin and Hoppe (2014) found that very few female student-athletes were susceptible to eating disorders and many had high levels of self-esteem and positive body image. Previous literature has explored the experiences of female student-athletes experiencing depression through a phenomenological perspective, however this whole population has not been explored using hermeneutic phenomenology (Jones et al., 2010; LaFountaine, 2007). The purpose of exploring this population through hermeneutic phenomenology is to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of collegiate female student-athletes so that administrators, coaches, and support staff can gain understanding of their experiences to guide their decisions and actions when leading this population. Participants were female student-athletes in their third or fourth year of eligibility at an NCAA, Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution. One in-depth, unstructured interview was conducted with each participant. Interviews were unstructured to allow the participant to direct the conversation and discuss aspects of her experience that seem most relevant to share. The transcripts were then analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) in which four themes emerged: transition blues, grinding it out, student-athlete bubble, and passing it on. Subthemes within these themes included: freshman year blues, senior year blues, injury, people leave, pressure, coaching issues, consuming, overwhelming support, my team, learning, and teaching. By examining the collegiate female student-athlete’s experience, athletic department staff can gain greater understanding of these experiences and better adapt to meet the needs of each student-athlete to enhance the experiences of this population.

Book excerpt: The present study explores the Black student-athlete experience at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and its potential impact on performance. There primary research question was twofold: (a) what is the academic, social, and athletic experience of Black student-athletes at PWIs (b) examine how their experiences may influence their athletic performance. Both male and female Black student-athletes (N= 4; N = 6) were recruited to participate in semi-structured interviews via Zoom. An interview guide and probing questions were used to examine the racial experiences of the participants in an academic, social, and athletic setting. Additionally, potential links to performance were explored through the interview guide. The interviews revealed four main themes: Microaggressions and Perceived Discrimination, Role Models and Social Support, Awareness of Identity, and Emotional Reaction and Management. Subthemes were also identified for each of the main themes. The findings of the study did not directly connect specific aspects of their experience to an improved or worsened performance. However, several of the themes presented by the participants have been seen to have an impact on performance in prior literature. These include belonging, team cohesion, support, amongst a variety of others. Coaches, athletic trainers, athletic departments, and professors should consider using these findings to inform their influence on Black student-athletes at PWIs. Future research is needed to explore the differences between the experiences of Black student-athletes participating in majority White sports at PWIs, as opposed to sports that heavily consist of other Black student-athletes.
