These scandals cleared the way for corporate governance committees to define new requirements on the control systems of public firms. However, the requirements of these committees did not prevent new problems with a number of firms, some of which published an in-control statement. This raises questions with respect to the effectiveness and completeness of the control of these firms, suggesting that possible quintessential elements or aspects are missing. The internal audit profession has been involved only indirectly in the discussion on corporate governance in the Netherlands. This thesis explores a theory of internal audit in relation to the nature and the control systems of Dutch public listed firms. It explores the interaction between the narrow syntactic computation and the external systems from a minimalist perspective. As has sometimes been noted, "Phase Theory" is the current way to study the cyclic nature of the system, and 'phases' are therefore the natural locality hallmark, being directly relevant for phenomena such as binding, agreement, movement, islands, reconstruction, or stress assignment. This work discusses the different approaches to phases that have been proposed in the recent literature, arguing in favor of the thesis that the points of cyclic transfer are to be related to uninterpretable morphology (the ?-features on the heads C and v*). This take on phases is adopted in order to investigate raising structures, binding, subjunctive dependents, and object shift (word order) in Romance languages, as well as the nature of islands.

Electromagnetic methods are covered in detail, involving the use of both electric and magnetic field effects. Techniques are described involv ing observations both at a number of discrete frequencies and with continuously changing frequency. In spite of the diversity of method it is interesting to note the strong links between the papers; two chapters, for example, start from the same fundamental illustration, first published by Won, of the basic relationship between source frequency, ground con ductivity and depth of penetration. The all-important economic aspects are not forgotten and the first chapter assesses the statistics of performance and describes their use in the shaping and management of an exploration programme. The IAU Symposium No 65 (Copernicus Symposium IV) on the 'Exploration of the Planetary System' was held in Copernicus' native town - Torun, Poland, from 5th to 8th September, 1973 under the auspices of Commissions 16 (Physical Study of Planets and Satellites) and 40 (Radio-astronomy) and the co-sponsorship of COSPAR. There were about 140 invited participants from 29 countries and about the same num ber of other participants to the Extraordinary General Assembly of IAU who came to Torun to attend the sessions of this symposium. Special funds of the Polish Acade my of Sciences made possible the participation of several young astronomers in this meeting. We are very grateful to Professor P. Swings, the Director of the Astrophysical Institute of the University of Liege, Belgium, for accepting the task of chairing this symposium.
