Book excerpt: Since the publication of 'Frames of Mind': 'The Theory in Practice', multiple intelligences, theory (Gardner, 1983) has been used by practitioners in a variety of ways to make teaching and learning more meaningful. However, little attention has been focused on exploring the potential of the theory for science teaching and learning. Consequently, this research study was designed to: (1) explore Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (1983) and its merit for making science teaching and learning more meaningful; (2) provide a forum for teachers to engage in critical self-reflection about their theory and practice in science education; (3) study the process of action research in the context of science education; and (4) describe the effectiveness of collaborative action research as a framework for teacher development and curriculum development. The study reports on the experiences of four teachers (two elementary teachers, one junior high teacher, and one high school teacher) and myself, a university researcher-facilitator, as we participated in a collaborative action research project. The action research group held weekly meetings over a five-month period (January-May, 1999). The inquiry was a qualitative case study (Stake, 1994) that aimed to understand the perspectives of those directly involved. This was achieved by using multiple methods to collect data: audiotaped action research meetings, fieldnotes, semi-structured interviews, journal writing, and concept mapping. All data were analysed on an ongoing basis. Many positive outcomes resulted from the study in areas such as curriculum development, teacher development, and student learning in science. Through the process of action research, research participants became more reflective about their practice and thus, enhanced their pedagogical content knowledge (Shulman, 1987) in science. Students became more engaged in learning science, gained a greater understanding of how they learn, and experienced a science curriculum that was more relevant and personalized. In addition, the action research process provided a feasible and effective forum for both curriculum development and professional development.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study sought to answer two questions: (1) How is Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) being interpreted and implemented in public elementary schools in Western Washington? and (2) What are the advantages, disadvantages and unique characteristics of each approach, as well as of MI in general? I interviewed two experts in the Multiple Intelligences field, interviewed and observed five teachers--four of whom were, for the first time this year, explicitly using an MI approach--and I had approximately 125 students in the five classrooms complete a survey/questionnaire. The findings of this research project indicated that MI theory is being used in the elementary classroom in a wide variety of ways. Advantages include: improved student interest in, ownership of, and achievement in learning, improved socio-emotional growth, and greater independence. Disadvantages include: labor-intensive curriculum development for the teacher, finding enough hours in the day to teach by way of this time-intensive approach, and conflict between students and school specialists who practice a more teacher-centered instructional approach. MI experts see Gardner's MI theory as having implications for education that are too progressive for most educators, and indeed, most people of this society, to embrace. Teachers committed to beginning an MI-based program are urged to: observe teachers practicing MI, to find a partner, to start small with a unit they really love, to not be afraid of making mistakes, and to develop their own style of Multiple Intelligences instruction.

Book excerpt: In this book, we introduce several sensitivity measures in educational contexts that can be used in research, education and self-evaluations. In Chapter 1 we discuss the framework of Howard Gardner‘s Multiple Intelligences theory and introduce our Multiple Intelligences Profiling Questionnaire. We present the psychometrical qualities of the instrument with empirical data sets of children, youth and adults. In Chapter 2 the Spiritual Sensitivity Scale is introduced with the theoretical framework it is connected to. The existence of spiritual intelligence has been a widely debated issue and not everybody is ready to call advanced thinking in religious or spiritual domains as intelligence. This has guided us to use the term sensitivity, which is easier to justify than intelligence in these areas of human behavior. In Chapter 3 we introduce the Environmental Sensitivity Scale, which is quite close to the possible intelligence of naturalist suggested by Gardner. In Chapter 4, Ethical Sensitivity Scale is introduced followed by Emotional Leadership Questionnaire in Chapter 5. All these scales have a solid theoretical framework and earlier empirical work to support the instrument building. Chapter 6 introduces Intercultural and Interreligious Sensitivity Scales with their theoretical frameworks and earlier empirical work. Following each chapter, we have included a ready-to-use version of the questionnaire and SPSS syntax to compute factors. A commentary by Dr. Seana Moran compliments the book and challenges the readers to further reflect the meaning of education in supporting holistic development of learners in their life-long journey. We have authored this book to contribute to this goal and hope it will be used in the hands of researchers, teachers and students in their mutual effort to grow and to learn new things in life.
