Download or read book Exploiting Childhood written by Jim Wild and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children deserve to live a life that is safe from exploitation and harm, but are we failing in our duty to protect them? Childhood today is big business - it is impossible for any child growing up to avoid pervasive and intense marketing from companies. Whether it be for fatty foods resulting in childhood obesity, expensive franchised toys which encourage tension within families and stigma among friends, or 'pornified' role models who pervert children's ideas of sexuality, research clearly shows that commercial pressures are having a direct impact on children's psychological development and health. This book draws together a series of hard-hitting articles contributed by key thinkers on child welfare and child psychology including Oliver James, Susie Orbach and Gail Dines. Together they identify new and emerging forms of child exploitation, and editor Jim Wild constructs a powerful argument for why current child protection procedures designed to protect children from abuse are no longer adequate. Outspoken and challenging, this book invites us to consider our responsibility for preventing the harm children are experiencing, and is required reading for anyone concerned with the welfare of children.

Book excerpt: In this book, while introducing different forms of child labour, the causes of continuing child labour and the risks that early labour entails for children in Iran are also examined. In terms of scope, this research for the first time systematically identified more than 57 economic sectors in which child labour is used, and its geographical areas covers two major Iranian cities: the capital city of Tehran and the neighbouring city of Karaj and their neighbourhoods. Field work was largely conducted at a time where the Covid 19 pandemic added to the economic stagnation and poverty among the research population. The age group of research participants ranged from 6 to 18. In total, over 300 interviews with children, parents, employers and practitioners were carried out, and the data was complemented by around 150 hours of participant observation by the research team. This book already published in Farsi and Kurdish languages and number of articles has been extracted from it and has been published in relevant journals.

Download or read book Law Through the Life Course written by Herring, Jonathan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Court decisions are typically seen as one-off interventions relating to an incident in a person’s life, but a legal decision can impact on the person as they were and the person they will become. This book is the first to explore the interactions of the law with the life course in order to understand the complex life journey as a whole. Jonathan Herring reveals how the law privileges ‘middle age’ to the detriment of the whole life story and explains why an understanding of the life course is important for lawyers. Relevant to those working in family law, elder law, medical law and ethics, jurisprudence, gender and the law, it will promote new thinking by exploring the engagement of the law with the life course of the self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale of the Rotherham child protection scandal has led professionals responsible for safeguarding children in other regions to recognise the extent of child abuse in their area and consider how to respond efficiently. Drawing on lessons learned from key case reviews and independent practice, this book tells the story of Rotherham and shows the consequences of failing to respond to concerns of child sexual exploitation. Using case examples demonstrating both poor and good practice, from Rotherham and elsewhere, the authors are able to present recommendations for improvements at strategic management and frontline practitioner levels.

Download or read book Making Sense of Child Sexual Exploitation written by Sophie Hallett and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-03-29 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scandals throughout the United Kingdom have lifted the problem of child sexual exploitation to near the top of the social policy agenda. But amid the furor, some key questions have been ignored. What makes child sexual exploitation different from other forms of child abuse? What do we know about why it happens? And what approaches are most effective for stopping it? In this book, Sophie Hallett argues that we need to use the exchange model--an approach lost in the current focus on "grooming"--to answer these questions. The book draws heavily on the voices of children and young people who have experienced sexual exploitation and the social work practitioners who have worked with them, to challenge mainstream discourse around child sexual exploitation, arguing that it is much more widespread than thought and that we must reorient our thinking about it if we want to succeed in preventing it.

Download or read book Exploiting Children written by Matt Spencer and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s citizens want children to receive a high-quality education in clean, orderly and safe schools staffed with quality teachers, support staff and courageous educational leaders. In many communities, such a school experience is something the students will never have. Why? One or more members of the governing board desire to use their elected position for personal gain. They are Exploiters. Some desire to exploit a little. Others crave total domination of the school system and become the petty tyrants of education. Whether the exploitation is minimal or extreme, exploitative board members are highly detrimental to the effectiveness of the local school system. They destroy teamwork, morale, careers and many times entire school systems. They steal a high-quality education from children. The predominant governance structure of public education dictated by law is seriously flawed. What thousands of citizens and educators strongly desire for their schools can be discarded and replaced with the unscrupulous will of one individual. Exploitive school board members must be understood and stopped. The governance structure of public education must be changed.
