Book On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations

Download or read book On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations written by Raymond J.H. Beverton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the fishes, a remarkably wide range of biological adaptations to diverse habitats has evolved. As well as living in the conventional habitats of lakes, ponds, rivers, rock pools and the open sea, fish have solved the problems of life in deserts, in the deep sea, in the cold antarctic, and in warm waters of high alkalinity or of low oxygen. Along with these adaptations, we find the most impressive specializations of morphology, physiology and behaviour. For example we can marvel at the high-speed swimming of the marlins, sailfish and warm-blooded tunas, air-breathing in catfish and lungfish, parental care in the mouth-brooding cichlids, and viviparity in many sharks and toothcarps. Moreover, fish are of considerable importance to the survival of the human species in the form of nutritious, delicious and diverse food. Rational exploitation and management of our global stocks of fishes must rely upon a detailed and precise insight of their biology. The Chapman & Hall Fish and Fisheries Series aims to present timely volumes reviewing important aspects of fish biology. Most volumes will be of interest to research workers in biology, zoology, ecology and physiology but an additional aim is for the books to be accessible to a wide spectrum of non-specialist readers ranging from undergraduates and postgraduates to those with an interest in industrial and commercial aspects of fish and fisheries.

Book Conservation of Exploited Species

Download or read book Conservation of Exploited Species written by John D. Reynolds and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of wildlife for food and other human needs poses one of the greatest threats to the conservation of biodiversity. Wildlife exploitation is also critically important to many people from a variety of cultures for subsistence and commerce. This book brings together international experts to examine interactions between the biology of wildlife and the divergent goals of people involved in hunting, fishing, gathering and culling wildlife. Reviews of theory show how sustainable exploitation is tied to the study of population dynamics, with direct links to reproductive rates, life histories, behaviour and ecology. As such theory is rarely put into practice to achieve sustainable use and effective conservation, Conservation of Exploited Species explores the many reasons for this failure and considers remedies to tackle them, including scientific issues such as how to incorporate uncertainty into estimations, as well as social and political problems that stem from conflicting goals in exploitation.

Book Missing and Sexually Exploited Children in the Enlarged EU

Download or read book Missing and Sexually Exploited Children in the Enlarged EU written by Gert Vermeulen and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2005 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book comprises country reports of the 10 new EU Member States. Each country report provides essential definitional information regarding the various forms of sexual exploitation of children and types of missing children, outlines the way data collection on sexual exploited and missing children by various governmental (police, judicial, other) and nongovernmental actors is organised, and delivers available data on the phenomena concerned. A final, comparative report bridges the country report information into a first epidemiological state of the art for the 10 new Member States and for the entire enlarged EU, comparing the newly gathered information with information collected in the initial 15 Member States during a previous study, the report of which has been published in January 2004 as the first book in the Childoscope series.

This book was released on 2006-06-19 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an environmental-economic analysis of exploited ecosystems with a clear policy orientation. The study moves beyond traditional economic fishery analysis in two respects. First, several theoretical and numerical models are offered that combine economic and ecological descriptions of fisheries. Second, valuation and stakeholder concerns are addressed in empirical analyses employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The approaches, models and policy insights are sufficiently general and innovative to interest a broad audience.

Book The Use of CITES for Commercially exploited Fish Species

Download or read book The Use of CITES for Commercially exploited Fish Species written by Solène Guggisberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the legality, adequacy and efficacy of using the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) for commercially-exploited fish species and assesses whether the existing institutional cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) is efficient. This case-study also provides an interesting lens to approaching wider international law issues. Indeed, finding ways to achieve effective governance of transboundary or global natural resources is central to the peaceful use of oceans and land. Furthermore, the role of science in advising decision-makers is a sensitive issue, which deserves scrutiny and is similar in many regimes. Finally, the complex problem of fragmentation of international law is acute in various fields of environmental law, as in all rapidly developing areas of international regulations.

Book Missing and Exploited Children

Download or read book Missing and Exploited Children written by Edith Fairman Cooper and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern about missing and exploited children gained national prominence in 1981 when Adam Walsh, the 6-year-old son of John and Reve Walsh was abducted and subsequently found murdered. A year later, with the help of other parents of abducted children, the Walshes worked for the passage of the Missing Children's Act of 1982 and later for the Missing Children's Assistance Act of 1984, to assist in recovering such children and bringing perpetrators to justice. The Missing, Exploited and Runaway Children Protection Act that was instituted in 1999 reauthorised and amended the Missing Children's Assistance Act of 1984. This book presents an overview of the issues that face the legislation pertaining to missing and exploited children. In addition, the book discusses the various efforts that are being taken to enhance the ability to locate the missing children. Contents: Preface; Missing and Exploited Children: Overview and Policy Concerns; The Missing, Exploited and Runaway Children Protection Act (MERCPA): Appropriations and Reauthorisation; Bibliography; Index.
