Book excerpt: A mark-recapture study of Atlantic cod, initiated off southern Newfoundland in 1997, was continued in 2002. The purpose of the study was to provide information on movement patterns of inshore & offshore cod and to obtain estimates of exploitation rates on different components of the stock. This report presents annual estimates of exploitation for each tagging experiment during 1997-2002 and summarizes the spatial & temporal distribution of recaptures of tagged cod released in various regions of the south coast during 1997-2002 and reported as recaptured up to the end of September 2002. The report also illustrates the distribution of recaptures from tagging.

Book Lower Bounds on the Exploitation of Cod Gadus Morhua in NAFO Divs 3KL and Subdiv 3Ps During 1997 99 from Tagging Experiments

Download or read book Lower Bounds on the Exploitation of Cod Gadus Morhua in NAFO Divs 3KL and Subdiv 3Ps During 1997 99 from Tagging Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes & presents results from a model developed to estimate exploitation rates (fraction of stock removed by the fishery) using tags returned from the commercial fisheries for Atlantic cod in NAFO Divisions 3KL & Subdivision 3Ps & adjacent areas during 1997-99. The model involves length- and gear-based exploitation rates and incorporates methods to estimate tagging mortality, tag loss, tag reporting rates, and fish growth. This model is used to estimate weekly exploitation rates in 3KL & 3Ps, but the focus is on exploitation in 3KL during the two time periods in which most of the commercial catch in 1999 was taken. The model's estimates represent the fraction of the tagged population exploited by the fishery if there was no migration. Using the reported landings for the two periods, the biomass of fish in 3KL is also estimated.

Book excerpt: "This document gives an account of the 2020 assessment of the Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua) stock in Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Subdiv. 3Ps, located off the south coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The French overseas territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon (SPM) also lies within the boundaries of NAFO Subdiv. 3Ps, and only Canada and France have fished in this area since the extension of jurisdiction by each country to 200 miles in the late 1970s. The stock is jointly managed by Canada and France through formal agreements"--Introduction, page 1.

Book Atlantic Cod

Download or read book Atlantic Cod written by George A. Rose and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive handbook, covering all aspects of the Atlantic cod including the biology, ecology, life histories, behaviour, commercial exploitation and conservation Not only is Atlantic cod one of the most valuable food fish in the world’s oceans, it is an important component of North Atlantic ecosystems and has been subject to much research into its biology, ecology and exploitation. After hundreds of years of exploitation, overfishing in the last half of the 20th Century caused many stocks to collapse, most famously the Northern cod stock off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Since then, most cod stocks have been better researched and managed, but remain in a variety of states, from fully recovered to continued decline. This book, written by world experts, describes that research and management, and the importance of cod and its fisheries on North Atlantic cultures and economies, with impacts well beyond the range of the species. Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish offers insightful chapter coverage of cod nomenclature, taxonomy, phylogeny and morphology; physiology and ecophysiology; reproduction and spawning behavior; early life history and pre-recruitment processes; migrations, movements and stock identity; feeding, growth and energetics; the place of cod in the ecosystem; the exploitation of cod through history and present day commercial fisheries and precautionary management for sustainable fisheries; impacts of climate change on cod biology and ecology; and the future of the species and its fisheries. Discusses the major commercial importance of Atlantic cod through history Provides a comprehensive treatment of the bio-ecology of the most researched and highly exploited fully marine species Examines how the decline (and recovery) of cod stocks is of great political and scientific interest An essential purchase for marine fisheries scientists Atlantic Cod: Bio-Ecology of the Fish is a vital book for all fisheries scientists, managers and fish biologists.
