Book Experiments and Demonstrations in Physics

Download or read book Experiments and Demonstrations in Physics written by I︠A︡. A. Kraftmakher and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inaugural volume of a new book series entitled "The Road to Scientific Success: Inspiring Life Stories of Prominent Researchers". Authoritative scientists such as Nobel Prize laureates Douglas D Osheroff and Herbert A Hauptman and US National Medal of Science recipients Paul Ching-Wu Chu and Eli Ruckenstein describe their life experiences in relation to how success was attained, how their careers were developed, how their research was steered, how priorities were set, and how difficulties were faced. These keys to success serve as a useful guide for anyone who is looking for advice on how to direct their career and conduct scientific research that will make an impact. The focus on the road to success (rather than scientific findings) and on personal experience aims to inspire and encourage readers to achieve greater success themselves. The objectives of this book series are: to motivate young people to pursue their vocations with rigor, perseverance and direction; to inspire students to pursue science or engineering; to enhance the scientific knowledge of students, including those that do not major in science or engineering; to help parents and teachers prepare the next generation of scientists or engineers; to increase the awareness of the general public to the advances of science; to provide a record of the history of science.

Book Testing Quantum Theory with Higher Order Interference in Many Particle Correlations

Download or read book Testing Quantum Theory with Higher Order Interference in Many Particle Correlations written by Marc-Oliver Pleinert and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure of quantum theory permits interference of indistinguishable paths. At the same time, however, it also limits such interference to certain orders and any higher-order interference is prohibited. This thesis develops and studies concepts to test quantum theory with higher-order interference using many-particle correlations, the latter being generally richer and typically more subtle than single-particle correlations. It is demonstrated that quantum theory in general allows for interference up to order 2M in M-particle correlations. Depending on the mutual coherence of the particles, however, the related interference hierarchy can terminate earlier. In this thesis, we show that mutually coherent particles can exhibit interference of the highest orders allowed. We further demonstrate that interference of mutually incoherent particles truncates already at order M+1, although interference of the latter is principally more multifaceted than their coherent counterpart. We introduce two families of many-particle Sorkin parameters, whose members are expected to be all zero when quantum mechanics holds. As proof of concept, we demonstrate the disparate vanishing of such higher-order interference terms as a function of coherence in experiments with mutually coherent and incoherent sources. Finally, we investigate the influence of exotic kinked or looped quantum paths, which are permitted by Feynman’s path integral approach, in such setups.

Book High Resolution Experiments on Strong Field Ionization of Atoms and Molecules

Download or read book High Resolution Experiments on Strong Field Ionization of Atoms and Molecules written by Lutz Fechner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the ionization of atoms and small molecules in strong laser fields is experimentally studied using a reaction microscope. The population of autoionizing doubly excited states in the laser fields is proven and a possible connection to the well-known dielectronic recombination processes is discussed. The fundamental process of tunnel ionization in strong laser fields is subject of investigation in a pump-probe experiment with ultrashort laser pulses. A coherent superposition of electronic states in singly charged argon ions is created within the first, and subsequently tunnel-ionized with the second pulse. This gives access to state-selective information about the tunneling process and allows to test common models. Moreover, the ionization of krypton and argon at different wavelengths is studied, from the multiphoton to the tunneling regime. The wavelength-dependent investigations are furthermore extended to molecular hydrogen. In addition to ionization, this system might undergo different dissociative processes. Channel-selective electron momentum distributions are presented and compared to each other.

Book Laser Light Scattering

Download or read book Laser Light Scattering written by Benjamin Chu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser Light Scattering: Basic Principles and Practice, Second Edition deals with the technical aspects of laser light scattering, including the basic principles and practice. Topics covered include light scattering theory, optical mixing spectrometry, photon correlation spectroscopy, and interferometry. Experimental methods and methods of data analysis are also described. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with a discussion on the interrelationship between laser light scattering and other types of scattering techniques that use X-rays and neutrons, with particular reference to momentum and energy transfers as well as time-averaged and time-dependent scattered intensity. The spectrum of scattered light and a single-particle approach to time-averaged scattered intensity are considered. The following chapters focus on photoelectric detection of the scattered electric field; optical mixing spectrometers; basic equations for photon correlation spectroscopy; and the principles of Fabry-Perot interferometry. The pertinent features of the experimental aspects of laser light scattering are also outlined, together with the Laplace inversion problem. The final chapter examines polymer molecular-weight distributions in relation to particle sizing. This monograph will be of interest to physicists.
