Book Experiments on Living Animals Useless and Cruel a Medical View of the Vivisection Question

This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments on Living Animals; Useless and Cruel (a Medical View of the Vivisection Question): An Address, Delivered at Newcastle-on-Tyne, Thursday, March 5th, 1914 Now, there is no question about it that this brings before us a great moral issue. If, for the sake of argument, we take for granted that Vivisection is cruel, then undoubtedly, since every thing that is cruel is wrong, the practice of Vivisection must be wrong. If, also, we take for granted that good has been derived from Vivisection and that good results will be achieved from the practice in the future, it is equally immoral, because we have no right whatever to do evil that good may come. (hear, hear). And hence, which ever way one looks at it, even taking for granted the position the vivisector takes up, Vivisection, in our Opinion, is a practice which cannot be condoned. Book excerpt: The founder and president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, and bestselling author Gene Stone explore the wonders of animal life with “admiration and empathy” (The New York Times Book Review) and offer tools for living more kindly toward them. In the last few decades, a wealth of new information has emerged about who animals are: astounding beings with intelligence, emotions, intricate communications networks, and myriad abilities. In Animalkind, Ingrid Newkirk and Gene Stone present these findings in a concise and awe-inspiring way, detailing a range of surprising discoveries, like that geese fall in love and stay with a partner for life, that fish “sing” underwater, and that elephants use their trunks to send subsonic signals, alerting other herds to danger miles away. Newkirk and Stone pair their tour through the astounding lives of animals with a guide to the exciting new tools that allow humans to avoid using or abusing animals as we once did. Whether it’s medicine, product testing, entertainment, clothing, or food, there are now better options to all the uses animals once served in human life. We can substitute warmer, lighter faux fleece for wool, choose vegan versions of everything from shrimp to marshmallows, reap the benefits of animal-free medical research, and scrap captive orca exhibits and elephant rides for virtual reality and animatronics. Animalkind provides a fascinating look at why our fellow living beings deserve our respect, and lays out the steps everyone can take to put this new understanding into action.

Book excerpt: "An Ethical Problem..." is a book by the late President of the American Humane Association and a Medical doctor Albert Leffingwell on the subject of scientific experimentation on both humans and animals. Taking aim at the practice of vivisection in secrecy and without legal regulation, common in the time of his writing the book, he opines that, "The position taken by the writer of this volume should be clearly understood. It is not the view known as antivivisection, so far as this means the condemnation without exception of all phases of biological investigation. There are methods of research which involve no animal suffering, and which are of scientific utility...An ethical problem exists. It concerns not the prevention of all experimentation upon animals, but rather the abolition of its cruelty, its secrecy, its abuse"

Download or read book In the Name of Science written by F. Barbara Orlans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-07-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few arguments in biomedical experimentation have stirred such heated debate in recent years as those raised by animal research. In this comprehensive analysis of the social, political, and ethical conflicts surrounding the use of animals in scientific experiments, Barbara Orlans judges both ends of the spectrum in this debate -- unconditional approval or rejection of animal experimentation -- to be untenable. Instead of arguing for either view, she thoughtfully explores the ground between the extremes, and convincingly makes the case for public policy reforms that serve to improve the welfare of laboratory animals without jeopardizing scientific endeavor. This book presents controversial issues in a balanced manner based on careful historical analysis and original research. Different mechanisms of oversight for animal experiments are compared and those that have worked well are identified. This compelling work will be of interest to biomedical scientists, ethicists, animal welfare advocates and other readers concerned with this critical issue.
