Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suture of Arteries: An Experimental Research The research described in this little book was undertaken in Vienna, and has been accepted for publication by Langenbeck's Archiv. My excuse for issuing it in book form in England is, that very little literature on the subject is available in our language, and that almost entirely in American journals. The revival of the procedure of suture of arteries is due to German surgery, and nearly all recent research on the matter has been done by Continental and American workers. It was however first suggested by an English surgeon, and first carried into effect by one of his colleagues with brilliant results. For the convenience of any taking more than a passing interest in the subject, I have appended a list of references to previous literature, which I have endeavoured to make as complete as possible, including both articles dealing with experimental research, and those describing clinical observations. Book Experimental Study in Thoracic Surgery

Download or read book Experimental Study in Thoracic Surgery written by William Lemoyne Wills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Study in Thoracic Surgery: Report of Committee on Surgery If we except a few isolated cases, recorded throughout medical literature, in which a herniated portion of lung tissue - the result of traumatism - was excised, and the removal of rare superficial tumors of the lung, pneumonectomy is, on the other hand, an essentially new operation. It is not the purpose of the writer to dwell upon the history of the first two operations mentioned, nor to present a statistical study of the results obtained up to the present time; such details may be found in the various surgical text-books and journal articles of recent years. The selection of a subject for discussion be fore this section at the present meeting was a matter of some difficulty. Having watched with great and increasing interest the labors of others in this and foreign countries, the writer decided to investigate the promising field of pneumonectomy for himself, and the present paper is the result of this decision. He has hoped to add his mite of information to the knowledge of this important subject, which he believes and predicts will, within the next ten years, become one of general inter est to the profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental and Clinical Research Into Certain Problems Relating to Surgical Operations: An Essay Awarded the Alvarenga Prize for 1901 by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia The several subjects comprising this research were suggested by practical experience in the Operating-room. As most of our exact knowledge of human functions has been gained by animal experimentation, it would seem to be safe to apply the laws thus Obtained to surgical prac tice. This is more particularly true of the vascular and the nervous system. Upon the ready and the exact appli cation of such laws depend the immediate results of many Operations. This research extended over three years, during which time the results were clinically compared and applied in an active Operative practice. It was exceedingly gratify ing to note the close correspondence between the phe nomena observed in the operating-room and in the labora tory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Research Into Surgical Shock: An Essay Awarded the Cartwright Prize, for 1897 Considering the great importance of the subject, it is a matter for surprise that there has not as yet been presented, so far as I am aware, an account of any considerable experimental research into surgical Shock. The present research had progressed but little before it became apparent that its scope was so comprehensive, and involved so many unsettled problems in physiology, that a clearly satisfactory termination could not be hoped for. The aim has been to obtain graphic data furnished in the performance of various surgical operations or by the infliction of different injuries. For the sake of clearness certain hypotheses have been advanced in a part of the research, with the understanding that they are subject to future change. In the main I have aimed to obtain the results bearing on the subject, Without always assuming to be able to explain the mechanism of their production. The magnitude of the subject and the great number of unsolved questions of physiology involved must serve as my apology for the incompleteness of the research. All the experiments were performed on unselected dogs, in regular order as they were supplied by the labora tory servant.
