Book Experimental Research on Explosively Driven Crack Initiation and Propagation from Flaws of Various Geometry

Download or read book Experimental Research on Explosively Driven Crack Initiation and Propagation from Flaws of Various Geometry written by Renshu Yang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to explore the fracture dynamic properties of defect bodies under explosion loading by using the system of digital laser dynamic caustics test. The propagation of directional cracks and the fracture process of defect bodies have been observed by high-speed camera, as well as analyzed for the changing rules of speed and stress intensity factors when the directional crack was close to defect. Experimental results found that the defect has an inhibitory effect on the spreading of cracks when the detonation crack is extended toward the defect. With the decrease of the curvature of the elliptical defect, the energy accumulation rate decreases with the decrease of the curvature in the process of the generation of the cracks at the endpoints of wings, and its fracture toughness increases with the decrease of the curvature, and when the curvature is reduced to a certain extent, the wing crack cannot crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor of the crack tip has a positive correlation with the velocity of cracking, within a certain range. The fracture toughness of the crack at the time it begins is larger than during its spreading.

Book Studies on Explosively Driven Cracks Under Confining In situ Stresses

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful explosive gas well stimulation requires a thorough understanding of explosively driven cracks under confining in-situ stresses. In a previous paper (Simha, et al 1983) the problem of explosively driven cracks was experimentally investigated to reveal the features of crack propagation. It was observed that the explosively driven crack propagation is the result of two different but overlapping phases. The first phase involving the initiation and early time crack propagation is entirely governed by the explosively generated stress transients. The rapidly decaying stress transients then lead to the second phase of crack propagation largely controlled by the in-situ stresses. The purpose of this paper is to more fully understand the characteristics of the first phase concerning the initiation and early time propagation of explosively driven cracks. Experiments are conducted with plastic models under biaxial compression and the dynamic event is observed with a high speed multiple spark gap camera of the Cranz-Schardin type. The experimental observations are utilized to propose analytical models of crack initiation under explosive loading to aid in the design of multiple fracturing necessary for successful application of modern well stimulation techniques. 8 references, 4 figures.

Book Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation

Download or read book Proceedings of an international conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning meeting for a conference on Dynamic Crack Propagation was held at M.LT. in February 1971 and attended by research workers from several industrial, governmental and academic organizations. It was felt that a more specialized meeting would provide a better opportunity for both U.S. and foreign researchers to exchange their ideas and views on dynamic fracture, a subject which is seldom emphasized in national or international fracture conferences. Dynamic crack propagation has been a concern to specialists in many fields: continuum mechanics, metallurgy, geology, polymer chemistry, orthopedics, applied mathematics, as well as structural design and testing. It impinges on a wide variety of problems such as rock breaking and earthquakes, pressure vessels and line pipes, comminution and the per formance of armament and ordnance, etc. Advances have been numerous, covering theories and experiments from both the microscopic and macro scopic points of view. Hence, the need for comparing the theoretical and experimental results and bridging the gaps between the atomistic and continuum approaches must be constantly emphasized. It also appeared that the overall problem of dynamic fracture could benefit from a con solidation of crack models proposed for the various types of materials: metals, ceramics, composites, rocks, glasses, polymers and biomaterials.

Book Rock Blasting and Explosives Engineering

Download or read book Rock Blasting and Explosives Engineering written by Per-Anders Persson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock Blasting and Explosives Engineering covers the practical engineering aspects of many different kinds of rock blasting. It includes a thorough analysis of the cost of the entire process of tunneling by drilling and blasting in comparison with full-face boring. Also covered are the fundamental sciences of rock mass and material strength, the thermal decomposition, burning, shock initiation, and detonation behavior of commercial and military explosives, and systems for charging explosives into drillholes. Functional descriptions of all current detonators and initiation systems are provided. The book includes chapters on flyrock, toxic fumes, the safety of explosives, and even explosives applied in metal working as a fine art. Fundamental in its approach, the text is based on the practical industrial experience of its authors. It is supported by an abundance of tables, diagrams, and figures. This combined textbook and handbook provides students, practitioners, and researchers in mining, mechanical, building construction, geological, and petroleum engineering with a source from which to gain a thorough understanding of the constructive use of explosives.

Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture
