Book Experimental Investigation of Nonlinear Dynamics in Single Mode Semiconductor Laser Diodes with Phase Conjugate Feedback

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Nonlinear Dynamics in Single Mode Semiconductor Laser Diodes with Phase Conjugate Feedback written by Gordon Thomas Hengst and published by . This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The semiconductor laser diode offers a unique system to investigate nonlinear dynamics when optical feedback is applied. Although there is extensive research of laser diodes with optical feedback from normal dielectric mirrors, very little has been done experimentally to analyze the effects of degenerate phase conjugate feedback from a BaTiO3 crystal. This research experimentally investigated the dynamics of a single-mode laser diode with weak phase conjugate feedback using both the self-pumped and double phase conjugate geometries. The experimental results validated a mathematical model which numerically evaluates the Lang-Kobayahsi coupled differential equations. The model simulated the nonlinear behavior of a laser diode subject to phase conjugate feedback and produced simulated RF and Fabry-Perot spectra of the laser Output. Model and experimental results showed frequency locking between the relaxation oscillation and external cavity frequencies and changes in the relaxation oscillation as a function of cavity length. Resonant behavior in the feedback strength necessary to undamp the relaxation oscillation frequency as a function of the cavity length was also captured experimentally an numerically. Validation of the model and experimental results presented in this research significantly contribute to the understanding of the nonlinear behavior of a laser diode subject to optical feedback.

Book Spatial Dynamics of Semiconductor Lasers

Download or read book Spatial Dynamics of Semiconductor Lasers written by John A. Houlihan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of semiconductor lasers over the past 40 years has been concerned with both their operating characteristics and their properties as a non-linear optical system. In particular, the transition from stable dynamical operation to a more complex dynamical state, when the number of degrees of freedom of the system is increased, is of great interest from technological as well as fundamental viewpoints. This thesis will examine two examples of this type of extension namely, the increase in the transverse size of the laser cavity and the effect of delayed external incoherent feedback, on the lasers dynamics. In the former case we will study a mechanism for the stabilization of the chaotic output of the laser and in the latter we will identify some instabilities and discuss their properties. Broad area lasers are ubiquitous in modern optical fiber networks, their main application being the pumping of erbium doped fiber amplifiers. They are characterized by their ease of fabrication and subsequent low cost. However, they display complex chaotic spatio-temporal dynamics at high output powers which leads to a loss in the spatial coherence of the laser beam. This loss in spatial coherence limits the applications of these devices and/or constrains the laser to operate at low output powers. We will analyse, both experimentally and theoretically, a simple technique which may be used to stabilize the output of these simple broad area lasers, namely transverse injection profiling. The mechanism for stabilization of these lasers is identified and an alternative implementation is discussed. In the remainder of the thesis, the effect of incoherent delayed feedback on a single transverse mode, multi-longitudinal mode semiconductor laser is experimentally analysed. This experiment is motivated by the large amount of theoretical and experimental work concerning both regular and phase conjugate optical feedback in semiconductor laser devices. In these situations, the dynamical evolution is determined by the coupling between the carriers, the optical intensity and the phase difference between the laser output and delayed field. In the incoherent case, the phase difference may be neglected. In particular, the effect of phase amplitude coupling, which plays a crucial role in the coherent and phase-conjugate feedback situations, may be neglected in the incoherent feedback case. This is because the external cavity system is no longer sensitive to small changes in the solitary laser frequency. However, the system still displays a number of intensity instabilities, similar to the coherent feedback case, whose nature will be discussed.

Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating recent advances made concerning the chaos, stability and instability of semiconductor lasers, and discusses their applications and future prospects in detail. It emphasizes the dynamics in semiconductor lasers by optical and electronic feedback, optical injection, and injection current modulation. Applications of semiconductor laser chaos, control and noise, and semiconductor lasers are also demonstrated. Semiconductor lasers with new structures, such as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers and broad-area semiconductor lasers, are intriguing and promising devices. Current topics include fast physical number generation using chaotic semiconductor lasers for secure communication, development of chaos, quantum-dot semiconductor lasers and quantum-cascade semiconductor lasers, and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. This fourth edition has been significantly expanded to reflect the latest developments. The fundamental theory of laser chaos and the chaotic dynamics in semiconductor lasers are discussed, but also for example the method of self-mixing interferometry in quantum-cascade lasers, which is indispensable in practical applications. Further, this edition covers chaos synchronization between two lasers and the application to secure optical communications. Another new topic is the consistency and synchronization property of many coupled semiconductor lasers in connection with the analogy of the dynamics between synaptic neurons and chaotic semiconductor lasers, which are compatible nonlinear dynamic elements. In particular, zero-lag synchronization between distant neurons plays a crucial role for information processing in the brain. Lastly, the book presents an application of the consistency and synchronization property in chaotic semiconductor lasers, namely a type of neuro-inspired information processing referred to as reservoir computing.

Book Dynamics and Synchronization Phenomena of Semiconductor Lasers with Delayed Optical Feedback

Download or read book Dynamics and Synchronization Phenomena of Semiconductor Lasers with Delayed Optical Feedback written by Michael Peil and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, strategies to efficiently control nonlinear dynamical properties of semiconductor lasers with delayed optical feedback are successfully applied and accomplished. Based on this possibility, it is demonstrated how nonlinear dynamics can be harnessed for the realization of coherence controlled sources and encrypted communications based on chaotic carriers. Semiconductor lasers (SLs) with delayed optical feedback can exhibit intriguing dynamical phenomena. Therefore, these delay systems have become established experimental systems for studying fundamental nonlinear dynamics phenomena, comprising high-dimensional broadband chaotic emission dynamics. Nevertheless, with regard to the functionality of technical applications of SLs, feedback induced instabilities often represent a severe problem, so that much effort has been undertaken to suppress such instabilities. The opposite approach, asking whether the complex dynamical behavior of these systems can also be harnessed for applications remained barely treated so far. To give an answer to this question represented the gist of this thesis. With this aim, the emission properties of SLs with optical feedback have been intensively studied with the focus on regimes of chaotic emission. It is exemplified how the obtained knowledge about the nonlinear dynamical behavior of these systems can be utilized for tailoring the emission properties of SLs. This result represents a cornerstone of the presented work, since in fact it facilitates realization of new applications which are based on chaotic light. To substantiate this finding, a tailored SL light source is presented for which the coherence length can be tuned in a range between 8 m and 130 m. Such a light source can be implemented in modern ranging measurement technology, e.g., in chaotic LIDAR systems. As a second example, it has been studied whether it is possible to synchronize SL-systems that exhibit broadband, high-dimensional chaotic dynamics. The presented results give evidence that excellent synchronization can be achieved. Even more, it is verified that the revealed synchronization properties can be successfully utilized for realization of functional cryptographic communication systems. Hence, both examples highlight the potential of applied nonlinear dynamics for realization of novel practical applications for SLs.

Book All Optical Noninvasive Delayed Feedback Control of Semiconductor Lasers

Download or read book All Optical Noninvasive Delayed Feedback Control of Semiconductor Lasers written by Sylvia Schikora and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stabilization of unstable states hidden in the dynamics of a system, in particular the control of chaos, received much attention in the last years. In this work, a well-known control method called delayed feedback control is applied for the first time entirely in the all-optical domain. A multisection semiconductor laser receives optical feedback from an external Fabry-Perot interferometer. The control signal is a phase-tunable superposition of the laser signal, and provokes the laser to operate in an otherwise unstable periodic state with a period equal to the time delay. The control is noninvasive, because the reflected signal tends to zero when the target state is reached.

Book Numerical Study of Coherence of Optical Feedback in Semiconductor Laser Dynamics

Download or read book Numerical Study of Coherence of Optical Feedback in Semiconductor Laser Dynamics written by Mindaugas Radziunas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonlinear dynamics of semiconductor laser with coherent, as compared to incoherent, delayed optical feedback systems have been discussed and contrasted in prior research literature. Here, we report simulations of how the dynamics change as the coherence of the optical feedback is systematically varied from being coherent to incoherent. An increasing rate of phase disturbance is used to vary the coherence. An edge emitting, 830 nm, Fabry Perot semiconductor laser with a long external cavity is simulated. Following this study, consideration of prior and future experimental studies should include evaluation of where on the continuum of partial coherence the delayed optical feedback sits. Partial coherence is a parameter that will affect the dynamics.

Book Nonlinear Optics and Nonlinear Dynamics in Semiconductor Lasers Subject to External Optical Injection

Download or read book Nonlinear Optics and Nonlinear Dynamics in Semiconductor Lasers Subject to External Optical Injection written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Phase II SBIR effort investigates novel output characteristics of semiconductor lasers that can be induced by external optical injection. Specific interest is in characteristics relevant to the control of microwave and millimeter-wave electronics through enhanced modulation characteristics, characterization of vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays, and analysis of chaotic dynamics that can be induced by optical injection. Under external optical injection, all semiconductor lasers tested, conventional edge emitting Fabry Perot laser diodes, VCSELs, and distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes exhibited periodic oscillation of the optical power due to an instability in the coupling between the circulating optical field and the semiconductor gain medium. The instability could be locked to a microwave reference by simultaneously injecting a weak modulation current at the appropriate frequency, i.e., double locking to both microwave and optical references. Phase locked operation with sub-Hz linewidth and - 125 dBc/Hz residual phase noise was measured, values that compare favorably with other published reports A compact configuration using relatively inexpensive optical components was demonstrated. All laser types could be accurately modeled using a lumped element, coupled equation model for the circulating optical field and free carrier density. The model showed good agreement with a mapping of the types of nonlinear dynamics observed experimentally.
