Book An Experimental Investigation of Subsonic Coaxial Free Turbulent Mixing

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Subsonic Coaxial Free Turbulent Mixing written by D. E. Chriss and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent coaxial air-air mixing and hydorgen-air mixing were studied. The ratio of outer stream to jet velocity was varied from 0.12 to 1.52 for the air-air mixing streams and from 0.16 to 0.42 for the hydrogen-air systems. Special emphasis was placed on the determination of the turbulent transport properties (especially the eddy viscosity and the Prandtl number) from the mean flow field measurements by use of an integral technique. Radial and axial profiles of velocity, concentration, shear stress, and eddy viscosity are presented, as well as radial profiles of the turbulent Prandtl number and representative static pressure profiles.

Book Interaction of a Side Jet with a Supersonic Main Stream

Download or read book Interaction of a Side Jet with a Supersonic Main Stream written by Clarence Albert Pierce and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted in the University of Michigan Supersonic Wind Tunnel to explore the main characteristics of the flow and pressure field generated by a supersonic jet directed at 90 deg to the body into the 1.90-Mach-number tunnel stream. In particular, a study was made of the spreading characteristics of the jet and its gross effect on the normal fore, drag, and moment of the cone-cylinder body, from which the jet issued. The phenomenon was investigated as a function of the pressure ratio, P sub o/P sub s (jet stagnation pressure to tunnel static pressure), angle of attack of the body, and jet-nozzle geometry. Within a relatively short distance from the exit, the normal jet was turned in the direction parallel to the free stream even at pressure ratios of over 50. Simultaneously, it spread in all directions, mixing violently with the free stream. Optical evidence suggests that fringes of the jet are in contact with the cylinder. This may have practical implications for the use of hot side-control jets on bodies. The interaction resulted in regions of both high and low pressure over the body. The normal force on the body was decreased below the nominal jet side-thrust value, and the drag was increased above the no-jet value. A moment which depends on the geometry, particularly the length of the body, was generated about the nominal center of gravity of the body.

Book Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Near Field Coaxial Mixing

Download or read book Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Near Field Coaxial Mixing written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the near field of coaxial jets, the structure of the flow field undergoes rapid changes as it evolves from the boundary layers at the nozzle exit, through a quasi-two-dimensional shear-layer region, to an axisymmetric jet flow. These rapid changes in flow structure have raised questions concerning the applicability of turbulent flow models in the near field, but few experimental results are available to test predictive techniques. In this report, the results of a series of experiments concerned with the near field of coaxial, nearly constant density, air-air jets are described. The experiments were carried out at an external stream velocity of 30.5 m/sec, and at nominal inner jet-to-outer jet velocity ratios of 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1.

Book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of the Mixing of Coaxial Heterogeneous Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion written by Gilles L. Hamelin and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the turbulent mixing of a sonic jet of helium discharging coaxially into a supersonic jet of air was made using a two dimensional mixing chamber. Volumetric concentration profiles were obtained and mass concentration and velocity along the jet centerline were plotted. The results indicated that both these vary inversely with the distance from the mixing origin raised to a four third power. Schlieren photography was applied in a semi-quantitative manner to confirm the validity of the above findings. This research project finds a potential application in the study and analysis of supersonic combustion ramjet engines. (Author).

Book Investigation of the Mixing of Perpendicular Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Investigation of the Mixing of Perpendicular Gas Jets as Applied to Supersonic Combustion written by Stephan P. Condon and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the turbulent mixing of subsonic, sonic, and supersonic jets of helium discharging transversely into a supersonic jet of air was made using a two-dimensional mixing chamber. The investigation has a potential application in the field of the supersonic combustion ramjet engine. The Mach numbers of the helium jets were 0.75, 1.0, and 1.5, respectively, and the Mach number of the air jet was 1.5. Both the helium and air jets had stagnation temperatures of approximately 76F. The effects of combustion on the mixing were not considered. Volumetric concentration values and total pressure values were obtained at points in the mixing region, and helium volumetric concentration profiles were plotted. Schlieren photography was used to obtain a visualization of the flow structure. Sonic injection was found to be the most desirable method of injection due to depth of penetration and total pressure considerations. (Author).
