Book excerpt: Experimental Hematology Today-1985 is a memento to the superb 14th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Experimental Hematology, held in Jerusa lem, Israel in July 1985. It represents a selection of the best presentations at the meeting. The manuscripts were selected by the local scientific committee and care fully reviewed by the editors. The yearbook is divided into five parts and represents the most recent advances in the basic sciences and clinical applications. Part I, under the leadership of Dr. L.A. Rozenszajn, is entitled "Hematopoietic Regulators." Papers in this section discuss the most recent discoveries on the phys iological regulation of hematopoiesis. Part II, "Hematopoietic Microenvironment," introduced by Dr. J.S. Greenberger, deals with the involvement ofthe hematopoietic microenvironment in the control of hematopoiesis. Dr. M. Saito leads Part Ill, "Dif ferentiation of Normal and Leukemic Cells," while Part IV, "Leukemic Cells in Leukemogenesis," is introduced by Dr. A. Raghavacher. The important discussions on recent advances in "Bone Marrow Transplantation," Part V, are headed by Dr. M.M. Bortin. Book Predictive Drug Testing on Human Tumor Cells

Download or read book Predictive Drug Testing on Human Tumor Cells written by V. Hofmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predictive drug testing on human tumor cells in order to define the appropriate chemotherapy will remain imperative as long as the anticancer agents available are few in number and show only limited activity. The advantages of an effective test would lie in obviating the need for testing antineoplastic agents on large cohorts of patients for assessment of drug activity (phase II studies) and in allowing determination of optimal use of anticancer agents (phase III trials). Such an in vitro test could help to better define dose and schedule of drugs preclinically. The additive value of individual drugs could be determined on tumor cells in vitro in order to define the best combination chemotherapy in vivo. Test-directed therapy would avoid unnecessary drug-related morbidity in patients with refractory tumors. Chemotherapy treatment would be more than justified even with side effects if palliation or even prolonged survival could be anticipated as a result. The benefits of predictive drug testing on human tumor cells would extend beyond improvement of individual patient treatment if the testing helped to identify new active agents. This spectrum of benefits to the entire field of oncology pro vides tremendous motivation for the development of such testing. Although a number of chemosensitivity tests have been proposed since the advent of modern anticancer chemotherapy, interest has been renewed by the possibility of cloning human tumor cells on agar plates, with a view to testing drug activity on cells with high pro liferation capacity.

Book Issues and Reviews in Teratology

Download or read book Issues and Reviews in Teratology written by Harold Kalter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is still no clear understanding of what causes the great majority of human congenital malformations. And since in most sorts of human disease and pathology that yet prevail prevention usually awaits understanding of cause, it is generally thought that the same is true of developmental aberrations. But is this true? For the relatively few congenital malformations whose causes are primarily environmental, it is plain that their discovery has enabled prevention, but not nec essarily immediately. It took a generation from the time of the discovery that maternal rubella was teratogenic to learn how to immunize against it. Much debate occurred before it was appreciated that thalidomide was a teratogen, and only its removal from the pharmacist's shelf and the end of the epidemic of limb defects attributed to the drug overcame the last doubts. For other proven environmental teratogens doubts and difficulties still con tinue. The claimed prevalence of fetal genital distortions due to female sex hor mones may have been exaggerated. Some potentially teratogenic therapeutic drugs, like anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, and anticancer chemicals, are still pre scribed despite this danger because of their benefits to pregnant women. For those congenital malformations whose basis is predominantly genetic or chromosomal it is different, however. Prevention has not been achieved by the discovery of such causes, as dramatic and revolutionary as some of them have been, except in the questionable sense of interference with reproduction by genetic coun seling or prenatal elimination. But this has not inhibited the romanticists.

Book excerpt: Stem cells are relatively undifferentiated cells which are the permanent lineage ancestor cells of tissues. Newly developed molecular biological techniques and probes have made possible dramatic advances in our ability to study the lineage development of stem cells. A major impetus to develop these techniques has been to identify specific stem cells for gene therapy purposes. The role that stem cells play in the development of cancer is also an important area. This book provides up-to-date reviews on a wide variety of stem cell systems by world experts. Chapters range from descriptions of the current knowledge of the biology of stem cells, to current molecular biological approaches and clinical implications. Oncologists and cell biologists will find this book of particular interest. It will also be usefule to radiobiologist, biotechnologists, and gene therapists. - Provides reviews of stem cell systems by world experts - Covers stem cell biology in plants, invertebrates, and mammals - Presents clinical implications of stem cell differentiation

Book Macrophages and Natural Killer Cells

Download or read book Macrophages and Natural Killer Cells written by Sigurd J. Normann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a meeting held in Davos, Switzerland, February 7-12, 1982 focused primarily on mononuclear phagocytes and on natural killer (NK) cells. This IX International RES Congress was attended by 489 scientists from 31 countries and there were 340 scientific presentations in oral or poster session. The essential purpose of the Congress was to bring together scientists representing various aspects of mononuclear phagocyte biology to review and examine cri~ically the effects and mechanisms of macrophage growth control as well as the participatio~ of these cells in the afferent and efferent limbs of the immune response. Additional topics included the production and distribution of mono nuclear phagocytes; the intrinsic and extrinsic regulation of these cells; and the origin, nature, function and regulation of NK cells. The ultimate goal of the Congress was to enhance communication between scientists in various countries and disciplines so that new research directives could be defined with which to explore basic aspects of macrophage and NK cell participation in the control of cancer and infection.
