Book Experimental Determination of Temperature Profiles by Ground Based Radiometry

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Temperature Profiles by Ground Based Radiometry written by Ed R. Westwater and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-week experiment was conducted to evaluate microwave and infrared radiometers for recovering low altitude temperature profiles. The radiometers were a two-channel microwave, operating at 53.5 and 54.5 GHz, and a four-channel infrared, operating near 15 micrometers. Meteorological support included radiosondes, helicopters, and an instrumented 500-foot tower. Statistical inversion of 13 radiometer angular scan data resulted in an average rms error of 2.0 K up to 10,000 feet for the microwave system. Significant features of thermal inversion structure were recovered. Difficulties in obtaining agreement between calculated and measured radiances precluded the retrieval of profiles from the infrared data. A continuous set of fixed-angle brightness observations correlated well with temperatures measured on the tower. The statistical inversion method and the Backus-Gilbert method were applied to the analysis of the accuracy and the spatial resolution of the ground-based system. (Author).

Book Surveillance of Environmental Pollution and Resources by Electromagnetic Waves

Download or read book Surveillance of Environmental Pollution and Resources by Electromagnetic Waves written by T. Lund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain lectures, research papers and working group reports from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Surveillance of environmental pollution and resources by electromagnetic waves", held at Spatind, Norway, April 9-19, 1978. Remote sensing of the environment has developed into a very complex multidisciplinary field. It encompasses a huge range of different instrumental techniques and analytical methods, designed to provide information about a vast number of environmental parameters. Nevertheless, the approach to solve specific problems and the ways of handling the collected information are to a large extent the same or similar. This commonality is the basis for the Advanced Study Institute. To provide the best possible background, both tutoria11y and for a fruitful exchange of research ideas and results, a number of outstanding scientists were invited to review some major fields. The material presented in these proceedings is certainly not complete in the sense that it covers all aspects of the subject. The selection is deliberately due to the program committee and the editor. The program committee would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Ti10 Kester, head of the NATO Advanced Study Institute Program, NATO Scientific Affairs Division, for his support and encouragement during the organization of the Institute. Oslo, June 1978.

Book Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing

Download or read book Introduction to the Physics and Techniques of Remote Sensing written by Charles Elachi and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-05-11 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science and engineering of remote sensing--theory and applications The Second Edition of this authoritative book offers readers the essential science and engineering foundation needed to understand remote sensing and apply it in real-world situations. Thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous technological leaps made since the publication of the first edition, this book covers the gamut of knowledge and skills needed to work in this dynamic field, including: * Physics involved in wave-matter interaction, the building blocks for interpreting data * Techniques used to collect data * Remote sensing applications The authors have carefully structured and organized the book to introduce readers to the basics, and then move on to more advanced applications. Following an introduction, Chapter 2 sets forth the basic properties of electromagnetic waves and their interactions with matter. Chapters 3 through 7 cover the use of remote sensing in solid surface studies, including oceans. Each chapter covers one major part of the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., visible/near infrared, thermal infrared, passive microwave, and active microwave). Chapters 8 through 12 then cover remote sensing in the study of atmospheres and ionospheres. Each chapter first presents the basic interaction mechanism, followed by techniques to acquire, measure, and study the information, or waves, emanating from the medium under investigation. In most cases, a specific advanced sensor is used for illustration. The book is generously illustrated with fifty percent new figures. Numerous illustrations are reproduced in a separate section of color plates. Examples of data acquired from spaceborne sensors are included throughout. Finally, a set of exercises, along with a solutions manual, is provided. This book is based on an upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate course taught by the authors at the California Institute of Technology. Because of the multidisciplinary nature of the field and its applications, it is appropriate for students in electrical engineering, applied physics, geology, planetary science, astronomy, and aeronautics. It is also recommended for any engineer or scientist interested in working in this exciting field.

Book Ground Based Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing

Download or read book Ground Based Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing written by Pranab Kumar Karmakar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to effectively monitor the atmosphere on a continuous basis requires remote sensing in microwave. Written for physicists and engineers working in the area of microwave sensing of the atmosphere, Ground-Based Microwave Radiometry and Remote Sensing: Methods and Applications is completely devoted to ground-based remote sensing. This text covers the fundamentals of microwave remote sensing, and examines microwave radiometric measurements and their applications. The book discusses the atmospheric influences on the electromagnetic spectrum, addresses the measurement of incoherent electromagnetic radiation from an object obeying the laws of radiation fundamentals, and explores the height limits in both the water vapor band and the oxygen band. The author describes the measurement technique of water vapor in the polar region, details studies of the measurement of integrated water vapor content by deploying a microwave radiometer, and presents several real-time pictures of radiometric and disdrometer measurements. Includes integrated water vapor and cloud liquid water models Contains measurements in adverse weather conditions Illustrates measurement technique in the Antarctic and Arctic regions Describes rain models in different locations including tropical, temperate regions along with radiometric measurement techniques Presents a definite model for measurement of propagation path delay The book summarizes the latest research results obtained in the area of measurements and modeling, describes the atmospheric influences on electromagnetic spectrum along with different gaseous and cloud models, and provides examples of radiometric retrievals from a variety of dynamic weather phenomena.
