Book excerpt: Gears are machine elements used in most engineering applications, mainly in the automotive and aerospace industries. When designing gear drives, the available standardised procedures are usually used for that purpose. However, the available computational methods are also often applied to obtain the load capacity of gears considering different fatigue design approaches (i.e. the stress-life approach, the strain-life approach and the fatigue crack growth approach). This book consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the reader to the fundamental magnitudes of gear drives concerning cylindrical gear pairs, bevel gear pairs, and worm gear pairs. The second chapter explains the theoretical background of the load capacity of gears; surface pitting load capacity and tooth root load capacity are described in detail. The third chapter focuses on the strength analyses of metal gears. Chapters four and five describe the strength analyses of sintered and polymer gears, including some typical practical examples.

Book Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements XX

Download or read book Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements XX written by S. Hernández and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formed of papers presented at the 20th International Conference on Computational Methods and Experimental Measurements, this volume provides a view of the latest work on the interaction between computational methods and experiments. The continuous improvement in computer efficiency, coupled with diminishing costs and the rapid development of numerical procedures have generated an ever-increasing expansion of computational simulations that permeate all fields of science and technology. As these procedures continue to grow in magnitude and complexity, it is essential to validate their results to be certain of their reliability. This can be achieved by performing dedicated and accurate experiments, which have undergone constant and enormous development. At the same time, current experimental techniques have become more complex and sophisticated so that they require the intensive use of computers, both for running experiments as well as acquiring and processing the resulting data. Some of the subject areas covered are Fluid flow studies and experiments; Structural and stress analysis; Materials characterization; Electromagnetic problems; Structural integrity; Destructive and non-destructive testing; Heat transfer and thermal processes; Advances in computational methods; Automotive applications; Aerospace applications; Ocean engineering and marine structures; Fluid-structure interaction; Bio-electromagnetics; Process simulations; Environmental monitoring, modelling and applications; Validation of computer modelling; Data and signal processing; Virtual testing and verification; Electromagnetic compatibility; Life cycle assessment.

Book excerpt: This book explores the geometric and kinematic design of the various types of gears most commonly used in practical applications, also considering the problems concerning their cutting processes. The cylindrical spur and helical gears are first considered, determining their main geometric quantities in the light of interference and undercut problems, as well as the related kinematic parameters. Particular attention is paid to the profile shift of these types of gears either generated by rack-type cutter or by pinion-rack cutter. Among other things, profile-shifted toothing allows to obtain teeth shapes capable of greater strength and more balanced specific sliding, as well as to reduce the number of teeth below the minimum one to avoid the operating interference or undercut. These very important aspects of geometric-kinematic design of cylindrical spur and helical gears are then generalized and extended to the other examined types of gears most commonly used in practical applications, such as straight bevel gears; crossed helical gears; worm gears; spiral bevel and hypoid gears. Finally, ordinary gear trains, planetary gear trains and face gear drives are discussed. This is the most advanced reference guide to the state of the art in gear engineering. Topics are addressed from a theoretical standpoint, but in such a way as not to lose sight of the physical phenomena that characterize the various types of gears which are examined. The analytical and numerical solutions are formulated so as to be of interest not only to academics, but also to designers who deal with actual engineering problems concerning the gears

Book excerpt: This book presents papers from the International Conference on Power Transmissions 2016, held in Chongqing, China, 27th-30th October 2016. The main objective of this conference is to provide a forum for the most recent advances, addressing the challenges in modern mechanical transmissions. The conference proceedings address all aspects of gear and power transmission technology and a range of applications. The presented papers are catalogued into three main tracks, including design, simulation and testing, materials and manufacturing, and industrial applications. The design, simulation and testing track covers topics such as new methods and designs for all types of transmissions, modelling and simulation of power transmissions, strength, fatigue, dynamics and reliability of power transmissions, lubrication and sealing technologies and theories, and fault diagnosis of power transmissions. In the materials and manufacturing track, topics include new materials and heat treatment of power transmissions, new manufacturing technologies of power transmissions, improved tools to predict future demands on production systems, new technologies for ecologically sustainable productions and those which preserve natural resources, and measuring technologies of power transmissions. The proceedings also cover the novel industrial applications of power transmissions in marine, aerospace and railway contexts, wind turbines, the automotive industry, construction machinery, and robots.

Book Bending Strength of Circular Arc Tooth Trace Cylindrical Gear

Download or read book Bending Strength of Circular Arc Tooth Trace Cylindrical Gear written by Ying Li and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book referred as the bending strength of CATT (circular-arc-tooth-trace) cylindrical gear is taken to mean the study of the tooth bending stress with the analytical models and testing data. The objectives of this book are to contribute theoretical formulas and experimental methods towards efficient design and analysis of CATT gear in academic research and engineering application. The bending strength formula of CATT gear is developed base on classic mechanics and heritage of the main part of spur gear formula with additional modified factors. It allows calculating the stress distributions along the tooth length at the root fillets for the predictions of the maximum stress and determination of the critical transverse section on tooth. The strain gauge method is applied to measure the stress distributions along the tooth length at root fillets. It provides a means for the bending stress measurement of CATT gear. The book indicates how to validate theoretical model by comparing the calculation analysis results with the test analysis results. This book is technically thorough, complete and consistent based on the existing knowledge, measuring technology and validated experience within academia and industry. It provides the appropriate methodology from bending stress modelling to experimental examination for the research and development of new type gear.
